Ransom slavery along the Ottoman borders : early fifteenth-early eighteenth centuries /

: Notwithstanding the spectacular upswing in the research, there are areas of Ottoman slavery that have still not received the attention they deserve. This volume intends to take a step towards bridging this gap. The twelve studies it contains are organised around connected themes: the hunt for, the trade in and the treatment of captives in the Balkans and in Central Europe. The area under scrutiny is focussed on Hungary, and some other border regions extending from the Crimea to Malta. It offers both an analytic and synthetic approach based on a great deal of so far unpublished Ottoman and European archival material. It not only examines Christian slavery in the Ottoman Empire, but also provides greater insight into the tribulations of Ottoman slaves in the Christian world and sheds light on the devastating effect of captive-related transactions on trade and sometimes on the financial position of whole communities.

A future without borders? : theories and practices of cosmopolitan peacebuilding /

: A Future without Borders (FWB) offers an explanation of why the recent, but by now distant, movements of the "Occupy Wall Street" activists have repeated themselves across the globe. The book demonstrates some of the processes inherent to an adapting cosmopolitanism (a call for civility, a call for Justice, a call for a collective responsibility or accountability) that is not individualistic in nature. Until recently, the statal/national problems understood as politico-economic failures were conceived as isolated problems, failures of statal institutions that are particular to certain countries. FWB contests the Westphalian logic that explains these circumstances, as national failures and argues instead that the conditions be assessed as extensions of the global economic and ideological failures that they surely are. Descendants of a lesser god : regional power in old and middle kingdom Egypt /

: ""The First Upper Egyptian nome, with its capital, Elephantine, was important in ancient times, as it stood on the southern border between Egypt and the Nubian provinces above the First Cataract. Since 2008, Alejandro Jiménez-Serrano has led an archaeological mission at the necropolis of Qubbet el-Hawa, where Elephantine's high officials are buried. In Descendants of a Lesser God, he draws on textual records and archaeological data, together with new evidence from his work at the tombs, to cast fresh historiographical light on the dynastic dynamics of these ruling elites. Jiménez-Serrano analyzes the origin of the local elites of Elephantine, and their role in trade and international relations with Nubia and neighboring regions, from the end of the Old Kingdom to the end of the Middle Kingdom. He explores the development of these power groups, organized as they were in complex households, which in many ways emulated the functioning of the royal court. Delving deeply into the funerary world, he also highlights the relationship between social memory and political legitimacy through his examination of the mortuary cult of a late Old Kingdom governor of Elephantine, Heqaib, who was transformed into a local divinity and later claimed as the mythic ancestor of the ruling family of Elephantine. The history of ancient Egypt has traditionally been written from a court perspective. This new history of a strategically important region not only modifies existing perceptions of provincial life in the Middle Kingdom among the elites, but also introduces new evidence to support more complex and detailed reconstructions of the dynastic families in power.""--

Autoethnographies of Border-Crossing and In-Betweenness of International Doctoral Students' Voices in the United States /

: This edited volume powerfully captures autoethnographies of international doctoral students in the U.S. and unravels a plethora of their experiences that oscillate between challenges and triumphs of navigating in-betweenness in their unique journeys. The concepts of border-crossing and in-betweenness encapsulate more than just a mere geographic displacement. Rather, they delineate the intricate dance of cultural, emotional, intellectual, and oftentimes, spiritual, transitions, often fraught with tension and self-reflection. As such, 12 chapters in this book will provide the readers with invaluable insights and foster a deeper empathy and understanding of the complexities faced by international students in the U.S. Contributors are: Saurabh Anand, Nadia Bhuiyan, Miriam Furlan Brighente, Heewon Chang, Suparna Chatterjee, Hanh Dinh, Sumeyra Gok, Monisha Issano Jackson, Grace Jue Yeon Kim, Nasiba Norova, Luis Javier Pentón Herrera, Lakmini Grant Siriwardana, Natalie Thibault, Ethan Trinh, Ngoc Tung Vu, Abir Ward, Zhenjie Weng, Bedrettin Yazan, Eun Young Yeom, Jing Yu and Jingyi Zhu.
