New Testament Semiotics : Linguistic Signs, the Process of Signification, and the Hermeneutics of Discursive Resistance /

: Focusing on linguistic signs, New Testament Semiotics navigates through different realist and nominalist traditions. From this perspective, Saussure's and Peirce's traditions exhibit similarities. Questioning Derrida's and Eco's semiotics based on their misuse of Peirce's innovations, Dr. Privatdozent Timo Eskola rehabilitates Benveniste and Ricoeur. A sign is about conditions and functions. Sign as a role is a manifestation of participation. Serving as a sign entails participation in a web of relations, participation in a network of meanings, and adoption of a set of rules. We should focus on sentences and networks, not primitive reference or binary oppositions. Enunciations are postulations producing evanescent meanings. Finally, the study suggests a linguistic approach to metatheology that is based on hermeneutics of discursive resistance.

11. Ägyptologische Tempeltagung : the discourse between tomb and temple /

: This volume of the book series Königtum, Staat und Gesellschaft früher Hochkulturen contains the proceedings of the eleventh international conference dedicated to the ancient Egyptian temple in all its aspects, which was hosted by the Czech Institute of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague in May 2017. The main theme of the meeting, the "Discourse between Tomb and Temple" revolved around the many diverse types of interaction that existed between two crucial and tangible expressions of ancient Egyptian thought, belief and culture. Ranging from the Old Kingdom to the era of Roman presence, the fourteen papers in this volume present, analyse and interpret evidence expressed in art, architecture, language, ritual, funerary and other practices, with a spotlight on relations, connections and exchanges between temple and tomb and its development and changing nature over time. This includes topics related to the transmission and exchange of specific textual corpora in addition to individual texts, decorative patterns or architectural elements as well as the interchangeability of rituals. Overall, the papers indicate incontestable distinctions between tomb and temple as well as substantial commonalities. These various forms of exchanges and interactions are moreover not static, but appear to develop and intensify over time, especially from the era of the New Kingdom onward.

Tārīkh-i Rashīdī /

: In the history of Islam, royal courts and other centers of wordly power played a major role in the survival and development of the sciences and the arts. And many rulers and high ranking officials themselves, too, often engaged in one or several of these. By way of example one may, for the Persianate world, mention Sultan Bayqārā (d. 911/1506), the Timurid ruler of Herat, and Ẓahīr al-Dīn Bābur (d. 937/1530), founder of the Mughal empire in India. Another example is the author of the present work, Mīrzā Muḥammad Ḥaydar Dūghlāt (d. 957/1551). Coming from a family of Chagatai generals and high administrators, he served a whole series of rulers in various parts of east Asia, mostly as a general and lastly as the ruler of Kashmir. Though wider in scope, the Tārīkh-i Rashīdī is above all a unique source of information on Chagatai history, full of personal reflexions on religion, culture, and the arts.

Naga ed-Dêr in the First Intermediate Period /

: Beginning in 1901, George A. Reisner conducted a number of excavating campaigns in the neighbourhood of the modern village of Naga ed-Der in Upper Egypt, opposite the ancient city of Thinis, at first for the Hearst Expedition of the University of California (up to 1905) and thereafter for the Harvard University-Boston Museum of Fine Arts Expedition.0Naga ed-Der is important because of a series of ancient cemeteries extending in time from the Predynastic period to the Middle Kingdom. These cemeteries run for about six kilometres from Sheikh Farag on the north to Mesheikh on the south and form parts of a single large cemetery of the Thinite nome UE 8. In the course of the excavations at Naga ed-Der, Reisner discovered in addition extensive remains of the First Intermediate period-decorated tombs, steles, and inscribed coffins-belonging to the period extending from the end of the Sixth to the Eleventh Dynasties. The Predynastic, Early Dynastic, and Old Kingdom material from Naga ed-Der has been studied and published by Reisner and Arthur C. Mace and by Albert M. Lythgoe and Dows Dunham. Dows Dunham published seventy-five steles from Reisner's excavations in 1937.0This volume endeavours to date the material found by Reisner, including the inscribed stones published by Dunham, with a view to elucidating the history of the site in the period between the Old and Middle Kingdoms. Furthermore, a number of steles seen on the art market or in museums or private collections which, by their style, belong clearly to Naga ed-Der, have been added as supplementary material.

Coptic society, literature and religion from late antiquity to modern times : proceedings of the tenth international congress of coptic studies, Rome, September 17th-22th,2012 and...

: It is a consolidated tradition that the 'Proceedings of the International Congresses of Coptic Studies' include both papers organized thematically - according to sections and panels - and a larger group of general reportraits, provided with a rich bibliography, about new research trends and acquisitions in a particular field of Coptology: art, archaeology, literature, linguistics, monasticism, Gnosticism, magic, etc. 'The Proceedings of the Tenth International Congress of Coptic Studies', in particular, contain the reportraits delivered during the Cairo Congress of 2008 (covering the period 2002-2008) and those pronounced during the Rome Congress of 2012 (covering the period 2008-2014), the latter characterized by two new reportraits: "Shenutean studies" and "Ethiopic studies in relation to Egyptian culture". Moreover, it is worth mentioning that for the first time some papers are organized in panels dedicated to very specific topics, in which current research is particularly alive, such as "Bawit: a monastic community, its structure and texts", "Thebes in Late Antiquity", or "The reconstruction and edition of Coptic Biblical Manuscripts". The outcome is a series of tools for the study of Christian Egypt and essays about Coptic literature, art and archaeology seen on the backdrop of Late Antique and Medieval Egyptian society and religion.

Proclus' hymns : essays, translations, commentary /

: This book studies the hymns composed by the Neoplatonist Proclus in the context of his philosophy. Its main claim is that the hymns should be understood in the context of theurgy, the ritual art adopted by the Neoplatonists in order to obtain mystical experiences. The first part of the book consists of a series of essays which discuss the relation of the hymns to Proclus' Neoplatonism, his theory of poetry, and especially to theurgy. The second part offers translations of the individual hymns together with a detailed commentary. This study will be of special interest to those working in the field of Neoplatonism and a helpful guide to scholars of Late Antique poetry and religion who wish to explore these intriguing, yet at times obscure poems.

Commentaries on Pindar /

: This volume contains word-for-word commentaries on Pindar's Olympian Odes 3, 7, 12, 14. Emphasis is placed on the explanations of peculiarities of grammar and idiom, but due attention is paid to figures of style and problems of poetic structure. The interpretations proposed by the author - many of them which are new - are documented as fully, but at the same time as concisely, as possible. This documentation, which includes a critical examination of other views, has been made more easily accessible by detailed indexes. The poems discussed do not have special similarities or interrelationships. On the other hand, they may be considered representative of the poet's art. From this point of view, the present selection may serve as an introduction to the study of Pindar's work. Vol. II will contain commentaries on Olympians 1, 10, 11, Nemean 11, and Isthmian 2. A third volume on Pythians 1, 8, 10 is inteded to conclude the series.

Saints and role models in Judaism and Christianity /

: This volume deals with the role of saints and exemplary individuals in Judaism and Christianity. Although sharing the Hebrew Bible and recognizing the same Biblical figures there, both religions have developed widely divergent perspectives upon the significance of these figures, although there are occasional common motifs and themes. Moreover, even the contrasting themes betray an underlying interaction between both religions as is clear from the contributions on, for example, Melchizedek, Elijah, the Desert Fathers, Rabbis on clothing, the Apostle Peter in Jewish tradition, the Maccabees in Christian tradition and the Biblical examples in Saint Antony the Hermit. The book examines Jewish and Christian perspectives upon saints and role models from the Biblical period to the present time. It will be of special importance to scholars and general readers interested in an interdisciplinary approach to theology, rabbinics, history, art history and much more.

: The individual character of Kingdom of Kush has often been overshadowed by the overwhelming cultural presence of its neighbour Egypt. This handbook in our series \'Handbuch der Orientalistik/Handbook of Oriental Studies\' for the first time presents a comprehensive survey of the rich textual, archaeological and art historical evidence for this Middle Nile Region Kingdom of Kush . Basing itself both on the evidence and scholarly literature, this work discusses the emergence of the native state of Kush (after the Pharaonic domination in the 11th century B.C.), the rule of the Kings of Kush in Egypt (c. 760-656) and the intellectual foundations and political history of the Kingdom in the Napatan (7th - Third centuries) and Meroitic (3rd century B.C. - 4th century A.D.) periods.
