Der 5. Band des Frankfurter Neuen Testaments bietet eine philologisch-kritische Neuübersetzung der sieben paulinischen Briefe, die von der neutestamentlichen Forschung mehrheitlich als authentische Briefe aufgefasst werden, also Röm, 1/2 Kor, Gal, Phil, 1 Thess, Phlmn. In der bewährten Zusammenarbeit eines Theologen und eines Altphilologen orientieren sich Stefan Alkier und Thomas Paulsen an der Semantik des Koine-Griechischen und ahmen weitgehend auch die griechische Satzstellung nach. So können sich Leser:innen ein eigenes Bild vom theologischen und ästhetischen Gehalt dieser nur scheinbar vertrauten zentralen Werke der abendländischen Geistesgeschichte machen, das so wenig wie möglich durch vorgegebene Interpretationen vorgeprägt ist. Die Einleitung untersucht Sprache und Stil der sieben Briefe. Der Epilog fragt nach den expliziten und impliziten Konflikten, die diese wohl ältesten christlichen Schreiben behandeln.
