The study of historic foodways is as multifaceted and varied as food itself. The changes we see in food habits and choices over history reveal evolving social and political climates and help us envision our ancestors' everyday lives and imagined afterlives. Food certainly played a role in funerary rites; it was offered to the dead, of course, but also shared at the grave among the living family members, symbolically bridging between this world and the next. Choosing the food was embedded in a series of traditions and norms; how it relates to what was actually eaten in associated settlements enables an understanding of its meaning. Feasts, whether for the dead or the living, were laden with political and social meaning. Fasting, although requiring abstention from certain foods, also involves the management--from sourcing and storing to cooking and eating--of the permitted foods, a key concern in contexts such as monasteries where fasting occurred. This collective work demonstrates the diversity of possible approaches to food. It presents the current state of research on the foodways of Egypt and Sudan and highlights the importance of further interdisciplinary collaboration for a "big picture" approach. It brings together 16 articles covering archaeology (in the broadest sense), theory, anthropology, language, ethnography, and architecture to illustrate food traditions and history in Egypt and Sudan from as early as the 4th millennium BC to the 20th century.
L'étude des modes alimentaires historiques est aussi multiple et variée que la nourriture elle-même. Les changements que nous observons dans les habitudes et les choix alimentaires au fil du temps révèlent l'évolution des climats sociaux et politiques et nous aident à imaginer la vie quotidienne et l'au-delà de nos ancêtres. La nourriture jouait certainement un rôle dans les rites funéraires ; elle était offerte aux défunts, bien sûr, mais aussi partagée dans ou à proximité de la sépulture entre les membres vivants de la famille, jetant symboliquement un pont entre le monde d'ici-bas et l'au-delà. Le choix des aliments s'inscrivait dans une série de traditions et de normes ; la comparaison de ceux offerts avec ceux ordinairement consommés permet de comprendre la signification qui leur était attribuée. Les fêtes, qu'elles soient destinées aux morts ou aux vivants, étaient chargées d'une signification politique et sociale. Le jeûne, bien que consistant à s'abstenir de certains aliments, implique également la gestion - depuis l'approvisionnement et le stockage jusqu'à la cuisson et la consommation - des aliments autorisés, une préoccupation essentielle dans des contextes tels que les monastères, où le jeûne était pratiqué. Cet ouvrage collectif rend compte de la diversité des approches possibles portant sur l'alimentation. Il présente l'état actuel de la recherche sur les habitudes alimentaires de l'Égypte et du Soudan et souligne l'importance d'une collaboration interdisciplinaire plus poussée pour une approche globale. Il rassemble 16 articles couvrant l'archéologie (au sens large), la théorie, l'anthropologie, la langue, l'ethnographie et l'architecture, qui illustrent les traditions alimentaires et l'histoire de l'Égypte et du Soudan depuis le IVe millénaire av. J.-C. jusqu'au xxe siècle.

Culture matérielle et contacts diplomatiques rassemble quatorze études qui traitent de la culture matérielle en relation avec les échanges diplomatiques qui ont marqué un espace géographique couvrant la zone méditerranéenne (Orient islamique, pour l'essentiel, Occident latin et Byzance) et une période qui correspond à celle de l'amplification de ces échanges, c'est-à-dire entre le XIe et le XVIe siècles, et où les sources se font plus nombreuses. This book presents proceedings of the conference devoted to rock art and graffiti studies in Egypt and Sudan that took place in Cairo from 10th to 12th November, 2019. The thematic spectrum of the contributions is very wide in terms of both their geographical and their chronological range, encompassing figural and textual sources dating from the Late Palaeolithic through the Predynastic, Dynastic, and Graeco-Roman periods, up to Christian and Islamic times. Many of the papers combine evidence from various archaeological domains and also attempt to better integrate graffiti and rock art materials in search of a common ground for research. Thus, the volume provides a good overview of the current state of investigations in these two fields of study in Egypt and Nubia. A book co-published with the Polish Center of Mediterranean Archeology, University of Warsaw.
Cet ouvrage présente les actes du colloque sur l'art rupestre et les graffitis en Égypte et au Soudan qui s'est tenu au Caire du 10 au 12 novembre 2019. Le spectre couvert par les contributions est très large, tant sur le plan géographique que chronologique, puisqu'il englobe des sources figuratives et textuelles datant du Paléolithique supérieur, des périodes prédynastique, dynastique et gréco-romaine, jusqu'aux époques chrétienne et islamique. De nombreux articles rassemblent des témoignages issus de divers domaines archéologiques et tentent de mieux intégrer les graffitis et les sources d'art rupestre pour en faire un fonds commun de recherche. Le volume ainsi constitué offre un bon aperçu de l'état actuel des recherches dans ces deux domaines d'étude en Égypte et en Nubie. This volume brings together the leading experts in the history of European Oriental Studies. Their essays present a comprehensive history of the teaching and learning of Arabic in early modern Europe, covering a wide geographical area from southern to northern Europe and discussing the many ways and purposes for which the Arabic language was taught and studied by scholars, theologians, merchants, diplomats and prisoners. The contributions shed light on different methods and contents of language teaching in a variety of academic, scholarly and missionary contexts in the Protestant and the Roman Catholic world. This volume gathers the proceedings of the Paris conference in Philonic studies (2017), consisting of 23 papers by contributors from 8 countries. Fifty years after the Lyon conference, it aimed at taking a retrospective look at the intellectual contexts and the academic fields in which Philonic studies have penetrated, as well as the ways in which they evolved. The work of the Alexandrian became of major importance in the history of philosophy. It has been studied as a source of cultured Christianity, in connection with Second Temple Judaism and the Alexandrian Jewish community, but also in the context of research on rabbinic Judaism, New Testament and philosophy of the imperial era. Ce volume rassemble les actes du colloque de Paris (2017), qui réunit 23 intervenants de 8 nationalités. Cinquante ans après le colloque de Lyon, il s'agissait de réfléchir aux milieux intellectuels et aux disciplines universitaires dans lesquels les études philoniennes avaient pénétré le monde de la recherche, les bases sur lesquelles elles avaient évolué. L'œuvre de l'Alexandrin a pris une importance majeure dans l'histoire de la philosophie ; elle a été explorée comme source du christianisme lettré, en lien avec le judaïsme de l'Époque du Second Temple et la communauté juive d'Alexandrie, mais aussi dans le cadre des études sur le judaïsme rabbinique, dans le développement des études sur le Nouveau Testament et sur la philosophie de l'époque impériale.

À travers une approche pluridisciplinaire rassemblant des contributeurs de spécialités diverses, cet ouvrage cherche à rendre compte de la réflexion cicéronienne dans toute sa richesse en examinant les enjeux historiographiques, prosopographiques, rhétoriques, philosophiques et politiques du traité. Il propose une réflexion synthétique et originale sur ce texte majeur, essentiel à la compréhension de la République tardive. Cicero's dialogue Brutus offers a history of Roman eloquence from its origins and Greek roots up to the time of the work's composition (46 BC) in the late Republic. It forms part of Cicero's response to the political and intellectual changes brought about by Caesar's dictatorship and has therefore attracted considerable scholarly attention from a number of fields. However, scholarly discourse has frequently remained isolated. This volume addresses the need to look at Cicero's treatise from an interdisciplinary angle and assembles contributions from scholars of historiography, prosopography, rhetoric, philosophy and politics. It thus puts forward a coherent and genuine interpretation of Cicero's Brutus that showcases the significance of this text for our understanding of the final years of the Roman Republic.
