In a career spanning seven decades, Qurratulain Hyder (1927-2007) achieved distinction as a novelist, journalist, translator, and innovator in Urdu literature. To shed new light on this multilingual itinerant woman with a curatorial eye, the present study turns to Hyder's genre-bending reportage writing, which has not yet garnered the same scholarly attention as her majestic novels and short stories. At once autobiographical, admonitory, journalistic, and lyrical, these reportages offer glimpses of Hyder's multigenerational erudition, artistry, and mastery of Perso-Urdu poetic aesthetics, as well as the challenges she faced when breaking from histories freighted by patriarchal, colonial, and nationalist enterprises.

The prominent role of women in Greek drama has always fascinated readers. This book proposes that women in Euripides' plays communicate in ways constructed by the tragic genre itself as 'female.' Yet these women's words are surprisingly not uniformly dangerous or excessively emotional, as has traditionally been thought. Rather, Euripides' women resort to 'female' ways of talking in order to enable others to understand them and their unique point-of-view. Aspects of women's speech-song, silence and secret-keeping as female verbal genres, and the challenges of speaking out of place-contribute to Euripides' portrayal of women as different from men. Originating in a culture where putting women under scrutiny was part of daily life, Euripides' tragedies dramatise women's constant struggle to control language.

Performing Islam takes as its main focus the rich array of ceremonial activities that shape and inform the lives of circles of women in south Tehran. Based on anthropological fieldwork, the book describes and analyses rituals that mark religious anniversaries and life course events in Iran today. Arguing that the ritual performances are powerful forums where ideas develop, and where rules, symbols and discourses are contested, this book discusses the values and beliefs underpinning gender constructions in a rapidly changing and complex society. The ambiguous metaphorical language of the rituals is examined, revealing how gender ideologies are projected and renewed, but also challenged, destabilized and ridiculed. Thus the rituals provide possibilities for self-expression, innovation and incremental change. This study goes beyond questions of meaning and culture to interrogate the dynamics of gender performance as products of power and politics.

How the Human Arrived in Islam and Then Disappeared : From Athens to Baghdad /

This book argues that while the concept of the human being was a Greek invention, its reinvention was Arab before it was European. Born in Greece in the fourth century BCE, this concept of the human being disappeared at the end of Late Antiquity, before reappearing in the Abbasid Near East. It was Muslim rationalist theologians who revived it in their theodicy of a just God who can only be just by recognizing the agency of human beings in their voluntary acts. Later, Arabic-speaking philosophers gave it a space of its own under the name of 'human sciences,' in the 9th century. But a traditional theology got the better of it. Its reappearance had to wait for the European Renaissance, while retaining its Arab origins.
