Over the past two decades, linguistic research into embodiment has paid considerable attention to the human body and its individual parts, particularly within typological and cognitively oriented studies. This volume continues that line of inquiry with a specific focus on the lower limb. It shows that, like other major body parts, the lower limb serves as a highly productive source domain for a wide range of conceptualisations across the world's languages and cultures. More generally, the book contributes to the growing body of work at the intersection of cognition, language, and culture. It also engages with embodiment theory, which posits that human cognition and language are fundamentally grounded in sensory-motor experience. The Strait of Gibraltar is a ubiquitous symbol of the supposed dividing line between Europe and the Muslim world. This book re-evaluates that perception with reference to new archival evidence about the links between the Gharb region of Morocco and Gibraltar and the establishment of the Moroccan consulate there, focusing on the period around 1750-1850. It shows the development of a complex set of political, social and economic relationships across the strait that connected Morocco to Gibraltar and beyond. In the light of this evidence, the book challenges prevailing arguments that emphasise the isolationist impulses of the Moroccan sultanate and Moroccan society, and highlights the extent to which European expansion in this period was shaped by local responses.

The intersection of religion, ritual, emotion, globalization, migration, sexuality, gender, race, and class, is especially insightful for researching Pentecostal notions of the body. Pentecostalism is well known for overt bodily expressions that includes kinesthetic worship with emotive music and sustained acts of prayer. Among Pentecostals there is considerable debate about bodies, the role of the Holy Spirit, possession of evil spirits, deliverance, exorcism, revival, and healing of bodies and emotions. Pentecostalism is identified as a religion on the move and so bodies are transformed in the context of globalization. Pentecostalism is also associated with notions of sexuality, gender, race and class where bodies are often liberated and limited.
