The period between 950 and 1150 A.D. is regarded as "turning point in the history of the Islamic Culture" from the Early Islamic to the Late Medieval civilization. What led to the urban decline in between and the later recovery? Ḥ̣arrān and al-Raqqa serve as paradigma for the development in Northern Syria and Northern Mesopotamia. The collapse of the ʿAbbasid state left the region cornered between Buyids, Fatimids and Byzantines to the nomadic tribes not acquainted with urban culture. After 1086 A.D., measures undertaken by the Seljuqs in order to safeguard their hegemony led to a renaissance of cities inspite of permanent power struggles and the crusades. They based their rule on fortified places. The financing of the army led to the distribution of land as fiefs ( iqtaʿ ) and subsequently to a dislodgement of nomads and a recultivation of former agricultural land. Cash money for the treasury was generated by skimming long distance trade; this in turn required public security on the roads. An analysis of the monetary circulation according to archaeological and literal evidence serves as measure for the economic recovery. A corpus of the coin production in al-Raqqa, ḥarrān and al-Ruha'/Edessa supplements the textual sources.

Adolf Deissmann: Ein (zu Unrecht) fast vergessener Theologe und Philologe

The chapters in this volume cover all aspects of the work of Adolf Deissmann (1866-1937). Following his main works, the authors highlight crucial aspects and impulses from his philological work on the New Testament, including the interpretation of Paul, Light from the Ancient East, the social status of the first Christians, and the lexicography of the New Testament. His background in the Lutheran Church of Hessen-Nassau, his contribution to the ecumenical movement together with Nathan Söderblom and through the Evangelische Wochenbriefe during World War II, and his role as rector of the Berlin University in 1930/1931 are also discussed. The contributions illustrate that notwithstanding his ecumenical engagement, Deissmann never gave up his scholarly work. The essays trace the influence of his philological and historical work among his students and place contemporary debates on Deissmann as philologist and theologian in their historical context. Dieser Band widmet sich in neun Einzelbeiträgen der gesamten Breite des Schaffens von Adolf Deissmann (1866-1937). Entlang der Hauptwerken werden wesentliche Aspekte und Impulse aus seiner philologisch orientierten Arbeit am Neuen Testament neu gewürdigt (Interpretation der Paulusbriefe, Licht vom Osten , "Unterschichtenthese", neutestamentliche Lexikographie et cetera). Daneben geht es um seine Herkunft aus der Evangelischen Kirche in Hessen-Nassau, um sein Wirken in der Ökumene am Beispiel der Beziehung zu Nathan Söderblom und der Arbeit an den Evangelischen Wochenbriefen im Ersten Weltkrieg sowie um seine Rolle als Rektor der Berliner Universität von 1930 bis 1931. Die Beiträge zeigen, dass Deissmann trotz seines ökumenischen Engagements seine wissenschaftliche Arbeit nicht aufgegeben hat. Die Aufsätze gehen den Wirkungen seiner philologisch-historischen Arbeit unter seinen Schülern nach und stellen die zeitgenössischen Debatten um den Philologen und Theologen Deissmann in ihren historischen Kontext.

?gypten ist das Land des Nils. Bei Asw?n durchbricht der Fluss eine Felsbarriere aus Granit und bildet die Stromschnellen des Ersten Katarakts. Hier tritt der Nil in das Siedlungsgebiet ?gyptens ein. Sein j?hrlicher Flutzyklus - rund 8 m betrug die Differenz zwischen Niedrig- und Hochwasser - hatte enorme praktische Auswirkungen auf Verkehr und Transport in dieser Grenz- und Steinbruchregion, vor allem aber f?r die Wirtschaft des ganzen Landes. Das Alte ?gypten lokalisierte die Quellen der Nilflut in der spektakul?ren Felslandschaft des Ersten Katarakts, und in den Nilometern im Gebiet von Asw?n wurde der Verlauf des lebensentscheidenen Naturph?nomens seit ?ltester Zeit pr?zise beobachtet und vermessen. Die Ursachen der Nilflut dachte das Alte ?gypten in religi?sen Kategorien. In den Riten und Mythen um die Gottheiten in den Tempeln der Region wurden Theorien der sakralen Kontrolle der Flut formuliert. Den Nil technisch zu kontrollieren, blieb der Neuzeit vorbehalten. Die gro?en Staud?mme bei Asw?n stehen f?r dieses letzte Kapitel in der Geschichte des Stroms. Daher eignet sich der Nil als Leitmotiv, Landschaft, Denkm?ler, Bilder und Inschriften der Region von Asw?n seit ?ltester Zeit und bis in die Gegenwart zu betrachten
