In December 2009, an international congress was held at Ghent University in order to investigate, exactly 20 years after the 36th RAI "Mésopotamie et Elam", the present state of our knowledge of the Elamite and Susean society from archaeological, philological, historical and geographical points of view. The multidisciplinary character of this congress illustrates the present state of research in the socio-economic, historical and political developments of the Suso-Elamite region from prehistoric times until the great Persian Empire. Because of its strategically important location between the Mesopotamian alluvial plain and the Iranian highlands and its particular interest as point of contact between civilizations, Susa and Elam were of utmost importance for the history of the ancient Near East in general.

"Depuis près d'un demi-siècle, l'étude des complexes funéraires royaux de l'Ancien Empire a constamment été nourrie par la découverte de nouveaux monuments ainsi que par la reprise des fouilles sur des sites déjà explorés. Curieusement, l'emplacement d'Abou Rawash, au nord-ouest du Caire, n'a fait l'objet d'aucune enquête systématique depuis les brefs travaux que lui avait consacrés É. Chassinat au début du XXe siècle. Or, il est aujourd'hui reconnu que ces vestiges comptent au nombre des rares maillons manquants dans la série des ensembles réétudiés. Cet oubli est d'autant plus surprenant qu'ils regroupent tous les éléments constitutifs des grands tombeaux des souverains de la Ive dynastie. En dépit des destructions subies et de l'exploitation intensive qui en a été faite depuis l'époque romaine par les carriers, les vestiges conservés offrent l'immense intérêt de présenter de nombreuses ressemblances avec un chantier en construction. This first issue of Europos-Doura Varia 1 follows Doura-Europos Études (I-V) who latest issues dealt with developments in the French-Syrian Expedition of Doura-Europos (MFSED) between 1986 and 1997. The change in the name of the site that this issue is introducing takes into account new historical discoveries that entail a shift from 'Doura-Europos' to Europos-Doura'. Europos was the name for a Greek phrourion then the Hellenistic and Parthian city for five centuries. Nevertheless, the name 'Doura' was used for half a century after the Roman conquest until the name 'Europos' came back during the last years of the city. Therefore, Europos seems more relevant to name this site while attaching the name of Doura to it. Articles in this volume are devoted to archaeological excavations findings of this site along with papers regarding materials and historical debates. These arguments enrich perceptions of the famous expeditions of F. Cumont (1922-1924) and M.I. Rostovtzeff (1928-1937). While the MFSED relies on these accounts, the articles in this volume modify sometimes the legacy of these expeditions.

Le canal de Suez et l'Empire ottoman /

"17 novembre 1869 : le canal de Suez est inauguré en grandes pompes, en présence de l'impératrice Eugénie. Mais la construction du canal, débutée en 1859, ne s'est pas faite sans heurts. Ferdinand de Lesseps et la France ont en effet bataillé durant de longues décennies avant de convaincre l'Empire ottoman, dont l'Égypte n'était qu'une province, de son bien-fondé. Accusée d'être un instrument de colonisation de l'Égypte au profit de la France, la Compagnie universelle du canal de Suez, "État dans l'État", est très critiquée par l'Empire ottoman. Celui-ci craint qu'un canal maritime séparant matériellement l'Égypte du reste de l'Empire rende illusoire la souveraineté du sultan sur ce territoire, et ouvre la porte à une domination occidentale inacceptable. Cet ouvrage ne propose pas une énième histoire du canal de Suez ni sur le plan technique, ni sur le plan diplomatique, mais il entend combler une lacune considérable : l'étude de cette histoire du point de vue ottoman, des projets à l'exploitation en passant par la construction du canal. Procès, arbitrages, polémiques : bien avant la "crise de Suez" de 1956 liée à sa nationalisation, le canal était déjà au coeur d'un jeu de puissances entre Orient et Occident."--Page 4 of cover.
