Historical Muscat is an attempt to define and explain the historical environment that determined the significance and design of Oman's capital city Muscat, its twin city Matrah, and their environs prior to 1970. It also examines how the development of the Muscat conurbation since 1970 has transcended the historical boundaries of the existing settlements and how the process of development has proceeded largely without any consideration of the impact on Muscat's tangible or remembered history. At the heart of the book is a historical gazetteer of forts, gates, palaces, mosques, houses, quarters, settlements, and other sites covering the broader Muscat region from Bandar Jissah to al-Sib. The text is accompanied by a large number of illustrations, including maps from various eras and both historical and more contemporary photographs.

The present volume brings together thirteen articles as so many chapters of a book, devoted to the history, methods, and practices of the commentaries that have been written on Aristotle's Rhetoric . Examining both the linguistic and factual background, these contributions attempt to insert each of the commentaries into its particular historical, political, social, philosophical, and pedagogical context. The historical periods and geographical areas that arise - from Greco-Roman antiquity to Heidegger's philosophy, from the Syriac and Arabic traditions to the Western world - make it possible, in sum, not only to indicate how the Rhetoric has been read and interpreted, but also to offer general perspectives on the practice of explicating ancient texts. Le présent volume rassemble treize articles envisagés comme autant de chapitres d'un livre et dédiés à l'histoire, à la méthode et à la pratique des commentaires à la Rhétorique d'Aristote. Mêlant l'approche matérielle et linguistique, ces contributions se proposent de réinscrire chacun des commentaires dans son contexte historique, politique, social, culturel, philosophique, et pédagogique particulier. Les costumes étudiés dans ce premier volume établissent qu'au-delà des situations géographiques éloignées, au-delà des diversités religieuses et ethniques, à travers des milliers d'années d'histoire et de civilisations successives, Nubiens, paysans de la Vallée du Nil, bédouins et habitants des oasis, à la fois chrétiens et musulmans, ont été les héritiers d'un même patrimoine. Anciens et nouveaux emblèmes se sont fondus dans une même tradition, définissant une identité égyptienne multiforme mais harmonieuse.Ils constituent une preuve indéniable et tangible de l'unité du pays et témoignent du fait que, tout au long de leur histoire, ces différentes communautés ont constitué les différentes facettes d'une nation multiculturelle et pluraliste.

This book presents proceedings of the conference devoted to rock art and graffiti studies in Egypt and Sudan that took place in Cairo from 10th to 12th November, 2019. The thematic spectrum of the contributions is very wide in terms of both their geographical and their chronological range, encompassing figural and textual sources dating from the Late Palaeolithic through the Predynastic, Dynastic, and Graeco-Roman periods, up to Christian and Islamic times. Many of the papers combine evidence from various archaeological domains and also attempt to better integrate graffiti and rock art materials in search of a common ground for research. Thus, the volume provides a good overview of the current state of investigations in these two fields of study in Egypt and Nubia. A book co-published with the Polish Center of Mediterranean Archeology, University of Warsaw.
Cet ouvrage présente les actes du colloque sur l'art rupestre et les graffitis en Égypte et au Soudan qui s'est tenu au Caire du 10 au 12 novembre 2019. Le spectre couvert par les contributions est très large, tant sur le plan géographique que chronologique, puisqu'il englobe des sources figuratives et textuelles datant du Paléolithique supérieur, des périodes prédynastique, dynastique et gréco-romaine, jusqu'aux époques chrétienne et islamique. De nombreux articles rassemblent des témoignages issus de divers domaines archéologiques et tentent de mieux intégrer les graffitis et les sources d'art rupestre pour en faire un fonds commun de recherche. Le volume ainsi constitué offre un bon aperçu de l'état actuel des recherches dans ces deux domaines d'étude en Égypte et en Nubie.
