Knowing the Mind : The Key to Promoting Well-being in Education /

: This book is about Yau Yan Wong's experiences as a teacher-researcher in practicing, teaching, and researching mindfulness practice in Thailand over the past 13 years. After learning from several Buddhist masters from different wisdom traditions, she introduced mindfulness practice to the students and teachers in an international school to nurture a healthier and more compassionate culture within the community. This book includes Wong's years of research findings on the benefits of mindfulness on child development, such as better focus, higher emotional intelligence, psychological resilience, and more. It also includes many short mindfulness practices and heuristics for teachers and parents to promote their emotional well-being and that of others in their daily lives.

Akrasia in Greek philosophy : from Socrates to Plotinus /

: Discussions on akrasia (lack of control, or weakness of will) in Greek philosophy have been particularily vivid and intense for the past two decades. Standard stories that presented Socrates as the philosopher who simply denied the phenomenon, and Plato and Aristotle as rehabilitating it straightforwardly against Socrates, have been challenged in many different ways. Building on those challenges, this collective provides new, and in some cases opposed ways of reading well-known as well as more neglected texts. Its 13 contributions, written by experts in the field, cover the whole history of Greek ethics, from Socrates to Plotinus, through Plato, Aristotle, and the Stoics (Cleanthes, Chrysippus, Epictetus).

Rationality and decision making : from normative rules to heuristics /

: Rationality and Decision Making: From Normative Rules to Heuristics offers a broad overview of both classic and very recent discussions concerning rationality and strategies of individual and group decision making. They are considered from a methodological, ethical, sociological, historical, cultural as well as an evolutionary perspective. Decision making, both rational and irrational, is treated in its complexity as an algorithmic, heuristic and intuitive process. The volume analyzes the theoretical and practical aspects of decision making in individual intentional endeavors and group or institutionalized undertakings. The analyses are mostly theoretical but they also appeal to empirical studies, proposed by philosophers and cognitive scientists who have studied logical, cognitive, biological, social and evolutionary aspects of human rationality. Contributors include María José Frápolli, Marek Hetmański, Jan F. Jacko, Artur Koterski, Agnieszka Lekka-Kowalik, Sofia Miguens, Ángeles J. Research in the social scientific study of religion.

: RSSSR continues to offer a place for the publication of theoretical and empirical papers related to the broad area of how the social sciences understand religion. Two papers in the general section add important contributions to the fields of faith development and spirituality. The use of special sections has enabled particular topics to be dealt with in detail and shows how information that is gathered incrementally can help make great advances in a field. Spirituality, alongside religion, features as the key independent variable in many of the nine papers of the special section in this volume. Social scientific approaches have sought to show links between the experiences of health, well-being or disease, and individual differences in religiosity and/or spirituality.

Motherhood and early childhood in ancient Egypt : culture, religion, and medicine /

: ""In ancient Egypt, a woman's primary role was that of mother, and as such she ensured her place within both her household and her community. And so, gods, doctor-magicians, as well as ghosts were all called upon to help the woman become pregnant. Pregnancy was not without risks, and the many tests, prescriptions, and spells that have survived to this day help us to understand obstetrics as it was practiced in those distant times. Once the woman had eluded the ill will of Seth-who was held responsible for miscarriages-and had reached her term, she was faced with the much awaited and yet also feared moment of birth. The successful delivery of a child into the world was seen as a gift of the gods, but it did not mean that the parent's worries were over. Indeed, it has been estimated that a third of all children did not reach the age of five years despite the combined efforts of parents and doctor-magicians to protect them. Amandine Marshall draws upon a wealth of sources, including texts, images, iconography, artefacts, and children's bodies themselves, as well as medicine, anthropology, and ethnography, to examine these issues and more, and in doing so sheds unprecedented light on the experience of maternity and early childhood in ancient Egypt.""--

La transformación del mundo rural en la isla de Mallorca durante la Antigüedad tardía (c. 300-902/903 d.c.) /

: This is the study of the rural landscape of the eastern part of the island of Mallorca (Balearic Islands) during Late Antiquity, providing new data that improves our understanding of one of the least well-known periods of the island. The author describes the results of the study of old archaeological surveys carried out on the island - which had not been published yet - and the results of new archaeological surveys. The conclusions from these studies detected a series of trends that help to better understand the settlement patterns of the island during the transition from the Roman period to medieval times. Furthermore, they help to obtain an overview of different transformations that occurred in the rural world in a territory that was strongly marked by its insularity.

New Kingdom Graffiti in Dahshur, Pyramid Complex of Senwosret III: Preliminary Report. Graffiti Uncovered in Seasons 1992–2010 /

: The Middle Kingdom (ca. 2010–1670 BCE) pyramid complex of Senwosret III at Dahshur contained a number of New Kingdom (ca. 1560–1080 BCE) hieratic inscriptions in its different structures. The texts proffer unique evidence for the study of the history of the pyramid complex, as well as of Egyptian literate culture, especially its relation to the uses of the past, and to sacred and ritual spaces. Relations between visual and written culture can also be observed with the help of graffiti that are placed in close contact with preceding decoration of the funerary complex. The preliminary report offers a summary of state of research, a description of hitherto uncovered graffiti corpus, and a perspective on interpretation of visitors’ graffiti in the pyramid complex of Senwosret III.

Rivers in prehistory : edited by Andrea Vianello.

: From antiquity onwards people have opted to live near rivers and major watercourses. Both freshwater and navigable routes provide the obvious reasons for settling near a river, but there are also many drawbacks, such as flooding. This volume explores rivers as facilitators of movement through landscapes, and it investigates the reasons for living near a river, as well as the role of the river in the human landscape. Ultimately, it focuses on the delicate relationship between humans and their environment, looking at the origins to help understand the present.

Memory and Presence of Female Saints in Ksar El Kebir (Morocco) : Oral Transmission and Written Tradition /

: This book discusses hagiographical sources from Morocco taking in consideration the often-overlooked oral tradition. Orality, as is shown in this study, completes and enriches the vision of hagiography that written sources traditionally has offered. The most relevant example in this book is the high presence of female saints in oral narratives that were not included in any other written sources. Recovering oral tradition to study hagiography as well as the role of female saints in Morocco has been one of the main areas of focus in this study as well as problematizing the dependence and dialogue between written and oral culture and can help to understand the diffusion and presence of similar phenomena in other areas of Morocco.

Newsletter, 28 January 1955

: Much of the work of the Cairo office is not very spectacular and attracts little attention locally. A number of inquiries are received by mail every week which are answered more or less promptly, depending on their nature. Bequests for photographs and other information, especially bibliographical data, come in regularly, and to fulfill them as well as possible and as quickly as possible takes much time and often much energy. We try to keep in touch with the other Schools affiliated with the Archaeological Institute of. America as well as with museums and universities at home, and even some of our European colleagues have turned to us for help if their own channels of approach proved inadequate. There are a number of callers every few days who wish to inform themselves of items as varied as the address of a certain institution in the U.S. and the number of American expeditions which have worked in Egypt in the past. There were also several American archaeologists on visits from Athens and Jerusalem whom we took to some of the sites near Cairo, and there is the ever-present task of keeping abreast of what is going on in the field and of writing it up for the Newsletter. But it was the showing of Mr. Garner’s film EGYPT - A JOURNEY INTO THE PAST which brought the Center to the attention of a wider public here in Cairo, and in order to follow up this interest it has been decided to arrange a number of tours for interested members of the American colony and their friends.
