Soldados, armas y batallas en los grafitos históricos /

: This edited volume deals with the presence and representation of the military in historical graffiti and also those military enclaves that tell us their history through their graffiti. The backbone of this publication is the study of various sets of historical military-themed graffiti (representations of battles, armaments, infrastructure, warriors and soldiers, slogans or proclamations, etc.), all of them drawings and/or messages engraved in spaces linked to defence culture (the walls of castles, barracks, sentry boxes, prisons or bunkers, among others). The compendium of collected chapters presents us with a holistic and multi-temporal vision from the ancient world to contemporary times; from Pompeii to America, and with a particular focus on the Iberian Peninsula.

L'apocalypse des animaux (1 Hen 85-90) : une propagande militaire? : approches narrative, historico-critique, perspectives théologiques /

: For the majority of scholars, the Animal Apocalypse is a militant text, a piece of pro-Maccabean propaganda. This text, however, develops theological reflections that are distinctly different from a justification of an armed struggle. Its themes are even incompatible with the Maccabean movement. It is impossible to condemn the Second Temple and, at the same time, mobilise people for a fight in order to purify that very Temple. After dealing with text-critical issues, this work challenges the thesis that the text is military propaganda through the use of narrative and historical approaches. The analyses, besides proposing a new way of a studying an apocalypse, spell out the peculiarity and the significance of the theology of the Animal Apocalypse in connection with the biblical history of Israel and the theology of the Qumran community.

Phenomenology and experience : new perspectives /

: Experience has been a pivotal philosophical topic since Greek antiquity. The phenomenological movement has also played a crucial role in the history of philosophical theories or ideas of experience. The major contributions of Husserlian and post-Husserlian phenomenology to the philosophical understanding of experience can hardly be overestimated. The ambition of this volume is to illustrate how phenomenology still remains a very fruitful approach that is essential to current philosophical and interdisciplinary debates on experience.

Enigmatic charms : medieval Arabic block printed amulets in American and European libraries and museums /

: This is the first comprehensive examination of block printing in the medieval Islamic world. Examples of Arabic block prints have been preserved in various collections across the globe, but they have long been treated as curiosities and oddities. Here, for the first time, a large representative corpus of block prints is examined and illustrated. The first section of the book places Arabic block printing in historical perspective and recounts their rediscovery by modern day scholars. The second section illustrates fifty-five examples of medieval Arabic block printed amulets, provides detailed techical descriptions of each, presents transcriptions of their texts into legible Arabic and offers translations of those texts into English.
