The memory of pain : women's testimonies of the Holocaust /

: In this book, Camila Loew analyzes four women's testimonial literary writings on the Holocaust to examine and question some of the tenets of the fields of Holocaust studies, gender studies, and testimony. Through a close reading of the works of Charlotte Delbo, Margarete Buber-Neumann, Ruth Klüger, and Marguerite Duras, Loew foregrounds these authors' search for a written form to engage with their experiences of the extreme. Although each chapter contains its individual focus and features, the book possesses a unity in intention, concerns, and consequences. In the theoretical introduction that unites the four chapters, Loew eschews essentialism and revises the emergence of the field of Women and Holocaust studies from the early 1980s on, and signals some of its shortcomings. In response, and in accordance with a recent turn in various disciplines of the Humanities, Loew highlights the ethical dimension of testimony and its responsible commitment to the other. In dealing with the texts as literary testimonies-a complex genre, between literature and history-, testimony is freed from the obligation to respond to the requirements of factual truth, and becomes a privileged form to voice the traumatic event, and to symbolically explore the role of excess.

In praise of folly. A critical edition of the Spanish translation of Erasmus' Morias Enkomion /

: The existence of a early Spanish translation of Erasmus's Encomium Moriae has been matter of speculation and unsuccessful research for over a century. This volume offers for the first time the edition of a seventeenth-century manuscript discovered at Ets Haim/Livraria Montezinos (Amsterdam) by its editors. They demonstrate that it is not only the first known early modern Spanish translation of Erasmus's chef-d'œuvre, but a copy of a much earlier version, composed in mid-sixteenth century. This scholarly edition has been arranged for an easy textual collation with the canonical edition (ASD IV: 3) and translation (CWE 27) of Erasmus's Praise of Folly and includes an extensive apparatus of footnotes devoted both to this version and to Erasmus's Moriae Encomium itself.

Between Memory and Power : The Syrian space under the late Umayyads and early Abbasids (c. 72-193/692-809) /

: Between Memory and Power intends to demonstrate that a robust culture of historical writing existed in 2nd/8th century Syria, and to offer new methodological approaches to access this now lost history, torn between memory and oblivion. By studying the making of Umayyad heroes or Abbasid origins-myths, this book aims to reveal the successive meanings granted to Syrian history, and to identify the various layers of historical writing and rewriting during the first centuries of Islam. Taken together, these elements make possible a history of meanings of the very space of Syria, articulated around power and its expression, which grants a clear coherence to the period, extending well beyond the dynastic caesura of 132/750.

Women, water and memory : recasting lives in Palestine /

: This book tells a different story about water. Against the backdrop of the end of the Ottoman Empire to the Palestinian uprisings, old Palestinian women recount life before and after piped water. While talking about fetching and managing household water, women also talked about being women. Women, Water and Memory speaks of many different lives. We hear stories about women's own strength and beauty, and about the woman who married a man whose ugly face made her sick. While one woman married the man "she cared for", another was relieved that her husband died when she was too old to be forced to remarry. We learn about the joy they feel each time they dance at a wedding, the sheer satisfaction of lighting a cigarette, the loyalty and shared despair towards families with members in prison, and about the tears of sorrow at each death and the delight at each birth.

Aristotle on memory and recollection : text, translation, interpretation, and reception in Western scholasticism /

: Twentieth-century Scholarship on Aristotle's De Memoria et Reminiscentia was dominated by the view that Aristotle's theories of memory and recollection are basically very similar to ours. By means of a new critical edition of the Greek text, an essay on Aristotle's own theories and an essay on these theories as they were received in the Latin West, the present book offers material that challenges the opinio communis. The result is a new interpretation of Aristotle's De Memoria et Reminiscentia and its relevance to the concerns of 21st-century philosophers, both regarding the concepts of memory and recollection and regarding Aristotle's philosophical methodology.

Memories of an impossible future : Mehdi Akhavan Sales and the poetics of time /

: In Memories of an Impossible Future: Mehdi Akhavān Sāles and the Poetics of Time Marie Huber traces the quest for a modern language of poetry through different figurations of temporality in the works of one of Iran's foremost poets. Akhavān is placed in dialogue with European thinkers and emerges as an original voice in world literature. Chapters examine aspects of rhythm and metaphor, messianism and historicity, and functions of time in Akhavān's lyric and epic poems. Through a range of close readings Huber seeks to understand Akhavān's texts as crystallisations of a historical moment, both rooted in the Persian tradition and pointing beyond it. Her analyses combine attention to philological detail with meditations on the philosophical significance of Akhavān's poetics.
