This source-reader invites you to encounter the world of one thousand years of Jewish self-government in eastern Europe. It tells about the beginnings in the Middle Ages, delves into the unfolding of communal hierarchies and supra-communal representation in the early modern period, and reflects on the impact of the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and of growing state interference, as well as on the communist and post-communist periods. Translated into English from Hebrew, Latin, Yiddish, Polish, Russian, German, and other languages, in most cases for the first time, the sources illustrate communal life, the interdependence of civil and religious leadership, the impact of state legislation, Jewish-non-Jewish encounters, reform projects and political movements, but also Jewish resilience during the Holocaust.

"Since Mohammed VI's accession to the throne in 1999, Morocco has pursued a continental foreign policy. The Kingdom aspires to be recognized as an emerging African power both in its identity and in its space of projection. In order to satisfy these ambitions, the diplomatic apparatus is developing and modernising, while a singular role identity is emerging around the notion of the "golden mean", supported by a system of discursive legitimisation as well as by the conduct of an "indirect strategy". This study presents, on an empirical level, the conditions of the elaboration and conduct of this African policy, and analyses, on a theoretical level, the evolution of the identity of the Moroccan power with regard to this African policy. The seminar on `Freedom of Association' was held in Reykjavik (Iceland) from 26 to 28 August 1993. It was organised by the Directorate of Human Rights of the Council of Europe in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice of Iceland, and dealt with the following four themes: freedom of association and political democracy; freedom of association and civil society; freedom of association and social democracy; freedom to form and join or not to join trade unions. Written communications were presented on the following subjects: case law of Article 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights, freedom of association and the freedom of associations, freedom of association of immigrants in Europe, freedom of association and public service and freedom of association, labour law and the needs of a democratic society. About one hundred personalities took part: representatives of governments of member States, representatives of non-governmental organisations, members of the European Commission and Court of Human Rights, professors and other interested persons from Central, Western and Eastern Europe competent in the fields covered by the themes of the Seminar. This publication contains the Proceedings of the Seminar: the official speeches made at the opening ceremony, the reports and written communications, the interventions, the final report and the list of participants. Le Séminaire sur la `Liberté d'association' a eu lieu à Reykjavik (Islande) du 26 au 28 août 1993.
