Priests, tongues, and rites : the London-Leiden magical manuscripts and translation in Egyptian ritual (100-300 CE) /
:
This book is an investigation into the sphere of production and use of two related bilingual magical handbooks found as part of a larger collection of magical and alchemical manuscripts around 1828 in the hills surrounding Luxor, Egypt. Both handbooks, dating to the Roman period, contain an assortment of recipes for magical rites in the Demotic and Greek language. The library which comprises these two handbooks is nowadays better known as the Theban Magical Library. The book traces the social and cultural milieu of the composers, compilers and users of the extant spells through a combination of philology, sociolinguistics and cultural analysis. To anybody working on Greco-Roman Egypt, ancient magic, and bilingualism this study is of significant importance.

Development of royal funerary traditions along the middle Nile valley during the Napatan Period (in the 7th century BC) /
:
The Napatan Period is the link between Egypt and Meroe, in time, in space, and in culture. Stimuli from Egypt had been adopted to express and formulate indigenous ideas, which deve loped their own dynamics and eventually become recog nisable as the distinctive Meroitic culture. This thesis paves the way for a better understand ing of the inter-societal transfer of religious ideas and symbols, as well as their role in Nubian state formation.

The revival of the Anu cult and the nocturnal fire ceremony at late Babylonian Uruk /
:
In The Revival of the Anu Cult and the Nocturnal Fire Ceremony at Late Babylonian Uruk , Julia Krul offers a comprehensive study of the rise of the sky god Anu as patron deity of Uruk in the Late Babylonian period (ca. 480-100 B.C.). She reconstructs the historical development of the Anu cult, its underlying theology, and its daily rites of worship, with a particular focus on the yearly nocturnal fire ceremony at the Anu temple, the Bīt Rēš. Providing the first in-depth analysis of the ceremony, Julia Krul convincingly identifies it as a seasonal renewal festival with an important exorcistic component, but also as a reinforcement of local hierarchical relationships and the elite status of the Anu priesthood.

Sanctifying texts, transforming rituals : encounters in liturgical studies : essays in honour of Gerard A.M. Rouwhorst /
:
Sanctifying Texts, Transforming Rituals: Encounters in Liturgical Studies explores the dynamics of Christian ritual practices in their relation to a broader cultural framework. The nineteen essays, written in honour of the liturgist Gerard A.M. Rouwhorst (Tilburg University), study liturgical developments in times of transition, in which religious and cultural changes set the development of worship practices in motion. The chapters in the first part (Texts) concentrate on the close connection between narrative texts and liturgical practice. In part two (Rituals), the focus shifts to the significance of liturgy as it expresses itself in rituals, and to the understanding of ritual acting. This section includes a variety of ritual aspects of liturgy, including the performance of the sacraments and the persons involved, as well as the relation between the liturgical ritual and material objects, such as images and relics. Section three (Encounters) crosses the borders of the discipline of liturgical studies. This final section of the book studies (ritual) relations between Christians and non-Christians through history, and includes contributions that study the dialogues between different liturgical languages and media. Contributors are: Elizabeth Boddens Hosang, Paul Bradshaw, Harald Buchinger, Charles Caspers, Paul van Geest, Bert Groen, Martin Klöckener, Bart Koet, Clemens Leonhard, Ruben van Luijk, Gerard Lukken, Daniela Müller, Willemien Otten, Marcel Poorthuis, Paul Post, Ilia Rodov, Els Rose, Joshua Schwartz, Louis van Tongeren, and Nienke Vos.

The Tekenu and Ancient Egyptian Funerary Ritual /
:
What is the 'Tekenu'? What was its function? What are its origins? These are questions upon which Egyptologists have long pondered but have not, until now, produced any major work to provide answers. Previous treatments of the 'Tekenu' largely adopt a selective approach focusing on a specific form. Rarely has the 'Tekenu' been examined profoundly in all its forms or contexts and its possible origins have been commented upon merely in passing. The aim of this book is to provide a provocative examination and interpretation of the 'Tekenu' in an endeavour to proffer plausible answers hitherto eluding scholars. Attested from the Fifth Dynasty until, and including, the Saite Period, the 'Tekenu' is a puzzling icon which is depicted within the funerary scenes in the tombs of some ancient Egyptian nobles. In this work four distinct types of 'Tekenu' are identified and classified and then a Corpus Catalogue is formed. This book will be of interest to the serious student as well as to anyone fascinated by the hidden messages to be revealed in the funerary iconography of ancient Egyptian tombs.
