Micromorphological analysis of activity areas sealed by Vesuvius' Avellino eruption : the early Bronze Age village of Afragola in Southern Italy /

: The remarkable preservation of the early Bronze Age village of Afragola on the Campania Plain of Southern Italy is unmatched in Europe. The site was buried under nearly a meter of volcanic ash deposited by the Avellino eruption of Vesuvius ca. 3945+10 cal. BP. The site boasts a large number of well-preserved structures, built features and organic materials and thus provides a laboratory-type setting in which to investigate variability in artifact distribution and activity areas across a single village. This research utilizes micromorphological analysis of thin sections of undisturbed sediment collected at the site to understand how people used living spaces, organized daily activities and, when possible, to connect village life to broad issues related to the emergence of social complexity on the Campanian Plain.

Evolution of a community : the colonisation of a clay inland landscape : Neolithic to post-medieval remains excavated between 1995 and 2011 at Longstanton in Cambridgeshire /

: The movement of people from the fen edge and river valleys into the clay lands of eastern England has become a growing area of research. The opportunity of studying such an environment and investigating the human activities that took place there became available 9 km to the north-west of Cambridge at the village of Longstanton. The archaeological excavations that took place over a 16 year period have made a significant contribution to charting the emergence of a Cambridgeshire clayland settlement and its community over six millennia. 'Evolution of a Community' chronologically documents the colonisation of this clay inland location and outlines how it was not an area on the periphery of activity, but part of a fully occupied landscape extending back into the Mesolithic period.

Judaism and Christianity : new directions for dialogue and understanding /

: This volume treats the interrelationship between Judaism and Christianity from the first centuries and into modern times, paying particular attention to these faiths' social, cultural, and theological interactions. The issues covered range from the formation of Jewish and Christian ideology in the context of Roman paganism to the ways in which Christian culture and theology of the medieval and modern periods form a backdrop to the creation of Jewish identity. While the historical periods and issues discussed are diverse, the result is to suggest the importance of our recognizing the close development of Judaism and Christianity. Written by top scholars in Judaic and Christian studies, these essays reflect on how the two faiths related to and were shaped by each other as they evolved in shared historical and cultural contexts, even as each maintained its own distinctive ideologies and beliefs.

Dust of the ground and breath of life (Gen 2:7) : the problem of a dualistic anthropology in early Judaism and Christianity /

: Issues such as the immortality of the soul, the debate about matter versus life, and whether one was capable of knowing the outside world were all being extensively discussed in many religions and cultures in both East and West. The present volume addresses the concept of an immortal soul in a mortal body, and focuses on early Judaism and Christianity, where this issue is often related to the initial chapters of the book of Genesis. The papers are devoted to the interpretation of Gen 2:7 in relation to the broader issue of dualistic anthropology. They show that the dualism was questioned in different ways within the context of early Judaism and Christianity.

The place name referred to the Salento peninsula, also called Messapia, as part of present-day Puglia and later to the land of the Bruttii , now the region of Calabria. This work is the first to carefully evaluate linguistic and historical studies in a comprehensive and monographic form. Winds from the north : Canadian contributions to the Pentecostal movement /

: Much of the scholarly focus on early twentieth-century Pentecostalism is dominated by the origins debates of the United States. The polarization between those who argue for Parham's theological contribution or Seymour's African American experiential contribution is well known. Beyond these debates scholars typically focus on the role of Americans in the development of Pentecostalism. However, the Hebden mission in Toronto, Canadian women, and the Latter Rain revival illustrate the transnational and innovative qualities of the movement. This book contextualizes the global story of Pentecostalism with some important and often neglected contributions by Pentecostals in Canada and their influence on Pentecostalism in the United States and the world.

Elemental World Cinema : Cinematic Entanglements of Earth, Fire, Water and Air /

: This is the first book-length study on the relationship between cinema and the classical elements. It centres on earth, fire, water and air to offer new perspectives on the intersection of film and the nonhuman in a time of climate emergency. Mobilising a range of analytical frameworks, including early film theory, Indigenous epistemologies and environmental sciences, the essays in this collection trace the complex agencies of the elements as they intersect with the material properties of the cinematic image across fiction, animation, documentary and experimental film. In doing so, the book positions elemental cinema as a multifaceted process and experience that might encompass attempts to think with, alongside or even 'like' the elemental, all the while recognising the limitations of our anthropocentric systems of meaning.
