Shāh Esmā'il and his Three Wives : A Persian-Turkish Tale as Performed by the Bards of Khorasan /

: This book is the first full text and translation of a prosimetric tale from the rich repertoire of Central and West Asian bards to be published with ready access to recordings of both the prose narration and the sung verse. In Iranian Khorasan, bards known as bakhshi present tales that in other regions are performed wholly in a Turkic language with prose narration in Persian, Khorasani Turkish or Kurmanji Kurdish and most verses in Turkish. We compare portions of the full performance transcribed here with excerpts from two performances of Iranian bakhshis in the 1970s. Three introductory chapters and a commentary discuss musical and verbal dimensions of the bakhshi's art in relation to relevant social, historical, and literary contexts.

Dilemmas of attachment : identity and belonging among Palestinian Christians /

: This book offers an ethnographic account of contemporary Christian Palestinian lives in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Through individual life stories, Bård Kårtveit shows how Christians in the District of Bethlehem strive to live meaningful lives. Lives which are shaped by Christian-Muslim relations within the national community, the impact of Israeli presence in the Palestinian Territories, migration and homeland-diaspora relationships, and which are heavily influenced by changes in their local community and traditional family structures. By situating these stories in the changing political contexts of Palestine, from late Ottoman to Israeli/Palestinian Authority rule, the author engages with these general processes of patriarchal resistance to social change; the role of minorities in nation-building processes; the impact of Western interventions in the region; the rise of political Islam; and the impact of emigration in the Arab World.

Seafaring expeditions to Punt in the Middle Kingdom : excavations at Mersa/Wadi Gawasis, Egypt /

: In the 12th Dynasty (ca. 1985-1773 BC) the Egyptian state sent a number of seafaring expeditions to the land of Punt, located somewhere in the southern Red Sea region, in order to bypass control of the upper Nile by the Kerma kingdom. Excavations at Mersa/Wadi Gawasis on the Red Sea coast of Egypt from 2001 to 2011 have uncovered evidence of the ancient harbor ( Saww ) used for these expeditions, including parts of ancient ships, expedition equipment and food - all transported circa 150 km across the desert from Qift in Upper Egypt to the harbor. This book summarizes the results of these excavations for the organization of these logistically complex expeditions, and evidence at the harbor for the location of Punt.

Le Canon 8 de Chénouté : d'après le manuscript Ifao Copte 2 et les fragments complémentaires /

: Shenoute (4th-5th cent.), the abbot of the great monastery in Upper Egypt known as "White Monastery," is considered as the Coptic writer par excellence, being the author of nine books of so-called Canons, or sermons on monastic discipline. Scattered after their discovery in the late 1880's, like all manuscripts of the Monastery's library, the volumes have reached us only in a very fragmentary state. Canon 8 is a welcome exception, as a copy, dated 8th century and preserved up to 80%, has been kept in the collection of Ifao for over a hundred years. Presented here are the description, edition and translation of the various sermons contained in the manuscript, with colour reproductions of all the pages stored in Cairo. Such a valuable testimony should be of great interest to scholars in book history and Coptic language, as well as in Egyptian monasticism, which Shenoute, one of its most passionate representatives, served with a fiery and subtle rhetoric.
