On winds /
:
In Theophrastus of Eresus: On Winds , Robert Mayhew provides a critical edition of the Greek text with English translation and commentary on the sole Peripatetic treatise devoted specifically to winds, by Aristotle's successor in the Lyceum. This is the first edition of this text to appear in over forty years, and the first ever to make use not only of the twelve medieval manuscripts but also of the Oxyrhynchus papyrus fragment of this work (first published in 1986). The lengthy commentary attempts to explain this difficult (and often corrupt) text and its relationship to Aristotle's meteorological theory and scientific methodology.

Winds from the north : Canadian contributions to the Pentecostal movement /
:
Much of the scholarly focus on early twentieth-century Pentecostalism is dominated by the origins debates of the United States. The polarization between those who argue for Parham's theological contribution or Seymour's African American experiential contribution is well known. Beyond these debates scholars typically focus on the role of Americans in the development of Pentecostalism. However, the Hebden mission in Toronto, Canadian women, and the Latter Rain revival illustrate the transnational and innovative qualities of the movement. This book contextualizes the global story of Pentecostalism with some important and often neglected contributions by Pentecostals in Canada and their influence on Pentecostalism in the United States and the world.

A new kind of containment : "the war on terror," race, and sexuality /
:
This book addresses "containment" as it relates to interlocking discourses around the "War on Terror" as a global effort and its link to race and sexuality within the United States. Promoting a New Kind of Education: Greek and Roman Philosophical Protreptic /
:
Authors of Greek and Roman philosophical protreptics imitate a kind of exhortation initially associated with Socrates, creating a thread of typically protreptic intertextuality that classifies protreptic as a genre of philosophical literature. Tracing this intertextuality from the Socratic authors to Boethius, the book shows how Greek and Roman protreptics define philosophy as a revisionary form of education, articulate the ultimate goals of this education, and associate their authors and audiences with philosophy as a new discursive practice and a new way of living. These texts constitute the first chapter in the history of educational revision and thus offer thoughts that continue to inform every debate on educational goals.

A New Look at the pds.t-n.t-nbw of Zauberspru?che fu?r Mutter und Kind, Spell P /
:
Since Erman’s rst edition of the Zauberspru?che fu?r Mutter und Kind, translators have never adequately explained the meaning behind the phrase pds.t-n.t-nbw, appearing in Spell P. Understanding the form of this amulet, meant to protect a child from sickness brought about by poison, is integral to a new interpretation of the Zauberspru?che fu?r Mutter und Kind Spell P. This paper begins with an analysis of the various attestations of the term pds.t, and then offers a new translation of Spell P. The main focus then shifts to a detailed examination of the archaeological and textual sources connected with the Spell P ritual, in order to understand the form of the pds.t-n.tnbw amulet, and how it, and the other amulets mentioned in Spell P, all served to remove poison from the body.
Weather omens of Enūma Anu Enlil : thunderstorms, wind and rain (tablets 44-49) /
:
The Assyro-Babylonian omen series Enūma Anu Enlil , written on seventy cuneiform tablets, bears witness to the early understanding of the mutual interactions of heaven and earth on both the physical and the religious levels. To facilitate accessibility, technical and linguistic commentaries as well as an excerpt series were compiled by the scholars of old. This ancient knowledge, which was still largely characterized by mythological concepts, was never completely abandoned, not even when the 'calculating' astronomy became prevalent in the first millennium B.C. The series deals in four parts with the moon, the sun, weather phenomena, and fixed stars and planets. This book offers an edition of the texts of the second half of the weather section with the accompanying material.

Houses in Herculaneum : A new View on the Town Planning and the Building of Insulae III and IV /
:
In this study a new view is given on the city-plan of ancient Herculaneum, by combining the evidence from the ancient writers, the 19th century explorations and the analysis of the measurements of the excavated house-blocks ('insulae'). Furthermore, it contains a detailed examination of the southernmost insulae III and IV, with surprising results. First of all the allotment of these two insulae is made visible, which gives way to a discussion about the division of land in pre-Roman Campania. Furthermore, the author distinguishes some new types of houses, which differ from the already known atrium buildings.

A study of Thumos in early Greek epic /
:
The language of early Greek epic, exemplified primarily by Homer, contains numerous descriptions of inner states and uses a specific vocabulary to do so. Scholars understand these descriptions in a general way; but the precision of the expressions remains a mystery. In this work, one of the most important of these words, thumos , is examined in each of its contexts. This synchronic formulaic analysis is carried out according to the contexts of thumos : the cognitive/intellectual, the emotional, and the physical. Two additional contexts, deliberation and motivation, are discussed separately. Within the discussion of each context, the functional synonyms of thumos, particulary phren/phrenes , and other frequent associates of thumos , are examined. Thumos has associations with words relating to winds and storms, a fact which helps clarify its significance in all contexts. Because this work is a discussion of thumos in all contexts, and also contains an appendix of the relevant passages, it should be useful to scholars engaged in research on Homeric vocabulary.

On weather signs /
:
On Weather Signs , traditionally ascribed to Theophrastus, contains the most complete list of such signs in antiquity and it was, in this or some very similar form, consulted by Aratus, Vergil (in Georgics I), and Pliny the Elder, as well as by many other authors throughout the Byzantine period. This edition is the first to take account of all the manuscripts and the commentary, the first in over a century, is on a far grander scale than earlier ones by Schneider (1818-21) and Wood (1894), listing almost all parallel texts for each sign. The introduction places the work in the context of its genre and for the first time lays out the details of its manuscript tradition.

Practicing philosophy as experiencing life : essays on American pragmatism /
:
Practicing Philosophy as Experiencing Life: Essays on American Pragmatism is a collection of texts written by top international experts on American philosophy. They consider various strands of American pragmatism from the viewpoint of practical philosophy, and provide the historical background and an outline of the international encounter with other philosophical traditions. Many key figures of American thought and pragmatist philosophy are discussed. The volume combines a panorama of approaches and gives a wide scope of problems: ethical, religious, social, political, cultural, ontological, cognitive, anthropological, and others, so as to show that pragmatism can be seen as a philosophy of life and as such it focuses on the life problems of contemporary humans in particular and of humanity in general. Contributors are: Jacquelyn Ann K. Kegley, John Lachs, Sami Pihlström , Krzysztof Piotr Skowroński, Kenneth W. Stikkers, and Emil Višňovský

Global Pentecostal movements : migration, mission, and public religion /
:
This volume contributes to the growing body of literature on religion and globalization and specifically global Pentecostal movements. While Pentecostalism worldwide shares a cultural resemblance, it is also localized and expressed in different ways. The variety of Pentecostalisms throughout the world are illustrated through important themes of mission, migration, and public religion. The global flows of Pentecostal practices, beliefs, and cultures, brings into contrast these variations. Negotiating what it means to be Pentecostal often leads to conflict and questions of identity. Interaction with other religions like Islam in Africa, mission work in Asia, and migration to Europe and North America is problematized. Regional coverage includes Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and North America.

Paracelsus (Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, 1493-1541) : essential theoretical writings /
:
The daunting writings of Paracelsus-the second largest 16th-century body of writings in German after Luther's-contributed to medicine, natural science, alchemy, philosophy, theology, and esoteric tradition. This volume provides a critical edition of essential writings from the authoritative 1589 Huser Paracelsus alongside new English translations and commentary on the sources and context of the full corpus. The Essential Theoretical Writings incorporate topics ranging from metaphyics, cosmology, faith, religious conflict, magic, gender, and education, to the processes of nature, disease and medication, female and male sufferings, and cures of body and soul. Properly contextualized, these treatises yield rich extracts of Renaissance and Reformation culture, soundings of 16th-century life, and keys to an influential but poorly understood early modern intellectual tradition.

Plotinus on Beauty : Beauty as Illuminated Unity in Multiplicity /
:
"In this book, Ota Gál presents a new analysis of Plotinus' conception of beauty, beginning from a close reading of treatises I.6 and V.8, which link beauty with the unified multiplicity of Intellect. This account is subsequently placed in a hierarchical and structural context in VI.2 and VI.6 and connected to illumination in VI.7, enabling us to determine the meaning of the predicate "beauty" at different ontological levels. For Plotinus, beauty is ultimately the illuminated unity in multiplicity of Intellect, which, as the manifestation of the Good, simultaneously enables the soul's ascent and threatens to bind the soul to itself"--
