Alha Udal ballad is a military folk rendition traditionally sung in large parts of northern and central India. It carries traditions, terms and idioms of nearly nine hundred years of collective memory of residents of Haryana in the north-west to Bihar in the east, and is sung in several dialects that stretch through this vast landscape. The present book is dedicated to the Khari Boli variant of the rendition which was sung in Western Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Haryana, with some overlap over the adjoining Brajbhasha cultural zone. Throughout our historical past, citizen soldiers were the backbone of all the armed forces of the sub-continent, working as farmers and herders during peacetime and as soldiers of the empire, the king or military generals when called out during times of war. It was folk renditions like Alha Udal that instilled in these citizens the requisite martial traits, transforming them into tough and seasoned soldiers with a will to fight and bear all adversities which they encountered with bravery and fortitude. This military rendition that prepared the residents of these lands to become soldiers from an early age, was thus instrumental in evolving a strong martial culture in India, the impact of which can be felt even today. The rendition is therefore an integral part of Project Udbhav that seeks to study and document the long history of Indian military and strategic thought and traditions.

Athanasius Kircher, a German Jesuit in 17th-century Rome, was an enigma. Intensely pious and a prolific author, he was also a polymath fascinated with everything from Egyptian hieroglyphs to the tiny creatures in his microscope. His correspondence with popes, princes and priests was a window into the restless energy of the period. It showed first-hand the seventeenth-century's struggle for knowledge in astronomy, microscopy, geology, chemistry, musicology, Egyptology, horology... The list goes on. Kircher's books reflect the mind-set of 17th-century scholars - endless curiosity and a substantial larding of naiveté: Kircher scorned alchemy as the wishful thinking of charlatans, yet believed in dragons. This volume offers a critical examination of recent theories concerning the growth of biblical literature in the light of the oldest textual witnesses (the Qumran biblical scrolls and the Septuagint). On the basis of a fresh examination of a selection of passages in the book of Joshua, it is shown that these witnesses do not reflect a stage in the literary formation of the book prior to the standardised (Masoretic) text, but a reinterpretation and reformulation of its contents. The study presents a new literary-critical solution to the intricate problems of Joshua 8 and a detailed exegesis of the Greek version of Joshua 1 and 5. Of special interest for Qumran scholars is the new reconstruction of 4QJoshuaª.

How did the Tocharians reach China? "Who did they meet on the way?" are some of the most intriguing questions in Indo-European studies. This book is zooming in on a specific part of the question: on their way to China, Tocharians were in contact with an Iranian people living in the south Siberian Steppes, and with a people related to the Oxus Civilization (BMAC). This Iranian people spoke a specific language, called here "Old Steppe Iranian". They gave Tocharians many words, such as mañiye 'servant', etswe 'burden-carrying horse' or 'mule', pāke 'portion, share'. The BMAC-related people gave the Tocharians other words such as etre 'hero' and kercapo 'donkey'. This book reconstructs features of the language of both these peoples, and examines how they influenced the Tocharians. Based on the latest archaeological findings, it also suggests a reconstruction of the chronology and the way the Tocharians followed before entering the Tarim Basin. Winner of the 2nd prize for the best dissertation of the Indogermanische Gesellschaft prize for the best Indo-European studies dissertation.
