This volume studies the seven psalms that were performed at the fundamental daily ritual of the Jerusalem Temple in the late Second Temple period (Psalms 24, 48, 82, 94, 81, 93, 92). It is the first comprehensive and detailed study of this richly-relevant liturgical collection. The work centers around a literary poetic analysis of the collection as a whole, focussing on unifying features such as connections between psalms, overall structure, theme and plot. A review of the Tamid service and exegetical studies of each psalm are included. Three innovative sections illustrate the importance of the Tamid Psalms in Second Temple studies; topics include the formation of the Psalter, the structure of liturgical texts, and the performance of Temple worship.

In From Onomatodoxy to Aesthetics: Aleksei Losev's Concept of Symbol , Teresa Obolevitch analyzes the category of symbol in broad historical and philosophical context, with a focus on Losev's exploration of symbol over his prolific and tragic career. A survivor of the Stalinist camps, Losev is recognized as the "last classic" of Russian Silver Age philosophy. This book addresses Losev's critical role within the divisive debate over onomatodoxy (imiaslavie), or the divine name, which occupied the minds of Russian thinkers in the early nineteenth century. Obolevitch presents the ancient and patristic roots of onomatodoxy and elucidates its importance for Losev's work in a range of fields, including aesthetics, mathematics, philosophy of language, and religion. Losev's work revolves around the possibility of expressing reality in language and his conception of symbol reflects both the apophatic aspect of Logos, as well as the possibility for new interpretations of reality.

This book delivers the first comprehensive analysis of the Peace Congress of Carlowitz (1698/99), challenging traditional Eurocentric views on early modern diplomacy. It demonstrates that peacemaking norms and practices were largely 'supra-cultural'-transcending cultural and religious divides across Europe and the Ottoman Empire. Carlowitz emerges as a significant multi-religious congress that introduced pioneering practices, particularly in ceremonial regulations. By confronting cultural essentialism, provincialising the Westphalian congress-model paradigm, and demythologising Carlowitz as a decisive political turning point-notably marking the adoption of a Western European-style diplomacy by cultural 'outliers' such as the Ottoman Empire and Muscovy-this study offers fresh insights into the complexity and polycentric nature of early modern multilateral diplomacy.
