Codex Vaticanus (4th cent. CE) includes the oldest, and probably the most important, complete copy of the Greek translation of the biblical book of Joshua (or Jesus, in Greek). The translation had been made some five centuries earlier (2nd cent. BCE) from a Hebrew version of Joshua which differed at many points from the Hebrew text now familiar to us. It was mostly rather literal; and, where it appears surprisingly free, it is often inviting attention to relevant passages in the books of Moses. What the first scribe of the Codex wrote is transcribed uncorrected. The deliberately literal rendering into English on facing pages provides ready access to alternative forms of the many proper names in Joshua. The commentary discusses both translation and exegetical technique.

This volume contains the first critical edition of the Life of Adam and Eve in Greek, based on all available manuscripts. In the introduction the history of previous research is summarized, and the extant manuscripts are presented. Next comes a description of the grammatical characteristics of the manuscripts' texts, followed by a detailed study of the genealogical relationships between them, resulting in a reconstruction of the writing's history of transmission in Greek. On the basis of all this information, the Greek text of the Life of Adam and Eve in its earliest attainable stage, is established. The text edition is accompanied by a full critical apparatus, in which all relevant evidence from the manuscripts is recorded. Several indices complete this volume.

Dabei untersucht sie auch das umfangreiche Pseudo-Phokylides-Zitat in Buch 2 sowie die Beziehungen der eschatologischen Abschnitte zur Petrusapokalypse. Within the disparate collection of ancient Sibylline Oracles book 1 and 2 form a historical apocalypse reaching from the creation to the eschatological Golden Age. It is unique in integrating biblical and classical mythology. Although Christian in its present form, its origins have been debated for a long time. This study examines its different parts and tries to reconstruct a pre-Christian document. It interprets the original work as a literary evidence of the Jewish-pagan symbiosis in Asia Minor in the imperial period. Its adaption is probably the earliest Sibylline writing produced by Christians. The study provides a line-by-line commentary. It contains a close examination of the tradition of Pseudo-Phocylides included in the Christian document as well as a comparison with the Apocalypse of Peter.

The panarion of Epiphanius of Salamis.

Epiphanius, monastic founder and bishop of Salamis on Cyprus for almost 40 years of the fourth century, threw heart and soul into the controversies of the time and produced the \'Panarion\' or \'Medicine Chest\', an historical encyclopedia of sects and heresies and their refutations. Book I, concerned chiefly with Gnostic and Jewish Christian groups, deals with material which is also found in Nag Hammadi and other Gnostic writings and in such patristic authors as Irenaeus, Hippolytus et al, and reproduces documents not available elsewhere. Its translation has been found useful by students of Nag Hammadi and Gnosticism, patrologists, historians of religion, church historians, students of Judaism, and the theologically minded public.

The Gospel according to St. John /

It contains also a complete critical apparatus of all the parchment manuscripts of John, including such important manuscripts as Codex Vaticanus and Codex Sinaiticus. The transcriptions and plates are restricted to fragmentary and difficult-to-read copies. These havereceived the same detailed treatment as was used by the International Greek New Testament Project to make an edition of the papyri of John (Brill: 1995). The International Greek New Testament Project is a European-American project currently collaborating with the Institut für neutestamentliche Textforschung (Münster, Germany) to make a critical edition of the Gospel of John in the Editio Critica Maior .

John the Physician's Therapeutics : a medical handbook in vernacular Greek /

The Therapeutics of John the Physician is a medical handbook from the thirteenth century, holding important new evidence on medicine as craft. Of particular interest is a vernacular version of the text, which also contains a commentary. Here, an unknown reviser vividly describes cases and medical procedures, a type of knowledge rarely encountered in scholarly texts. In the present volume, the Therapeutics is published for the first time, along with a translation and an introduction to the topic. The problem of the Materia Prima is certainly one of the most important challenges of late antique Physics. It is interesting to note that such a difficulty has never been focused on an exhaustive treatise in Antiquity. If the question of the matter resists any investigation, it is because the matter is radically 'aneideos' (without form) even though it is the condition 'sine qua non' of the existence of all forms in the sensible world. The present study proposes the first translation in French of the entire eleventh Book of the Philoponus' Contra Proclum (VIe s.) which precisely discusses the status of the Prime Matter. After having clarified the context of such a question in the Neoplatonic Alexandrian School, it puts forward a detailled step-to-step analysis of the Philoponian argument, the notions used by him and a new general theory which attempts to evaluate the pertinence and the internal coherence of his contribution to this very problematic question. Le problème de la Materia Prima est sans aucun doute l'une des questions les plus redoutables de la physique tardo-antique. Du moins s'il faut en croire la difficulté à en circonscrire la théorie dans un traité qui put faire école. Si la matière, en effet, résiste à toute investigation rationnelle c'est qu'elle est foncièrement sans forme bien qu'elle soit la condition sine qua non d'existence de toutes les formes du monde sensible. La présente étude propose la première traduction en Français du Livre XI du Contra Proclum de Jean Philopon (VIe s.). Elle commence par recontextualiser le propos de Philopon en l'inscrivant dans la tradition de la 'Quaestio disputata' de l'Ecole néoplatonicienne d'Alexandrie. Chaque sous-chapitre traduit et exhaustivement annoté est suivi d'une analyse détaillée de l'argument philoponien et des notions mobilisées, ainsi que d'une théorie générale qui essayera à chaque fois d'évaluer la cohérence et la pertinence du propos du grammairien alexandrin.

On Weather Signs , traditionally ascribed to Theophrastus, contains the most complete list of such signs in antiquity and it was, in this or some very similar form, consulted by Aratus, Vergil (in Georgics I), and Pliny the Elder, as well as by many other authors throughout the Byzantine period. This edition is the first to take account of all the manuscripts and the commentary, the first in over a century, is on a far grander scale than earlier ones by Schneider (1818-21) and Wood (1894), listing almost all parallel texts for each sign. The introduction places the work in the context of its genre and for the first time lays out the details of its manuscript tradition.

Ancient doxography, particularly as distilled in the work on problems of physics by Aëtius, is a vital source for our knowledge of early Greek philosophy up to the first century BCE. But its purpose and method, and also its wider intellectual context, are by no means easy to understand. The present volume contains 19 essays written between 1989 and 2009 in which the authors grapple with various aspects of the doxographical tradition and its main representatives. The essays examine the origins of the doxographical method in the work of Aristotle and Theophrastus and also provide valuable insights into the works of other authors such as Epicurus, Chrysippus, Lucretius, Cicero, Philo of Alexandria and Seneca. The theme of this study is the Doxography of problems in physics from the Presocratics to the early first century BCE attributed to Aëtius. Part I focuses on the argument of the compendium as a whole, of its books, of its sequences of chapters, and of individual chapters, against the background of Peripatetic and Stoic methodology. Part II offers the first full reconstruction in a single unified text of Book II, which deals with the cosmos and the heavenly bodies. It is based on extensive analysis of the relevant witnesses and includes listings of numerous doxographical-dialectical parallels in other ancient writings. This new treatment of the evidence supersedes Diels' still dominant source-critical approach, and will prove indispensable for scholars in ancient philosophy.

Twentieth-century Scholarship on Aristotle's De Memoria et Reminiscentia was dominated by the view that Aristotle's theories of memory and recollection are basically very similar to ours. By means of a new critical edition of the Greek text, an essay on Aristotle's own theories and an essay on these theories as they were received in the Latin West, the present book offers material that challenges the opinio communis. On the basis of a fresh collation of the four primary manuscripts, this book presents a revised text of Plato's Ion , with full apparatus criticus. The commentary has a strong linguistic orientation; it includes discussions of Platonic vocabulary. Linguistic considerations are also the leading principle in the choice of one MS reading rather than another. Drawing on Byzantine practices and theories, the book pays special attention to questions of punctuation, an area too often ignored in editions of classical texts. The extensive introduction deals with, inter alia, Plato's attack on poetry, the position of the Ion in the corpus Platonicum-rather late, this book argues-, the title(s) of the dialogue, the reasons why MS Venetus 189 should be considered a primary MS, and the text of the Homeric quotations in the Ion.

The earliest Syriac translation of Aristotle's Categories : text, translation, and commentary /

Aristotle's logic first became known in the Middle East through the medium of the Syriac language at a time prior to the rise of classical Arabic philosophy. The present volume makes available for the first time the earliest Syriac translation (sixth century AD) of the Categories, which is here edited together with an English translation, analytical commentary, glossaries and indices. The availability of such an important early work will enable the beginnings of the Semitic Aristotelian tradition to be studied more comprehensively. This will open the way to a better understanding of both the study of Aristotelian logic in Syriac and also of the significance of the Syriac tradition for the genesis and rise of Arabic logic.

The art of the Hekatompedon inscription and the birth of the stoikhedon style /

The purpose of this book is to present the Hekatompedon Inscription at Athens ( IG I³ 4) as a major monument of Greek art, legitimately on a par with more famous landmarks of the Greek aesthetic tradition like the Parthenon Frieze. Inscribed most probably in the middle of the decade that saw the Greek response to the Persian invasion, the Hekatompedon Inscription has long been recognized for its historical and religious importance. This study looks at the inscription on its own terms: the unique fusion of its visual and textual content in that most Greek of epigraphical layouts, the stoikhedon style. Such an approach leads to the question of origins: where and why was the stoikhedon style formulated and where does the Hekatompedon Inscription stand in that development? Egypt's influential system of proportions and use of grids will be considered determinative for the very first time.
