Author A.H. Bingley gives a concise study of the Rajputs in Hand Book on Rajputs , covering various aspects relating to them, so that the reader gets an overview of the Rajputs. He begins with the origins of the Rajputs, briefly touching on ancient Rajput kingdoms, foundation of the Lunar and Solar races, invasions of Muslims, Greeks, the Mughals, raising of Imperial troops, role played by the Rajputs in the Mutiny and provides many other details as well. Bingley devotes the remaining chapters to their classification; festivals, customs and religion; general characteristics; and Rajput recruitments. Under classification, Bingley has listed 78 clans, covering their geographical distribution, history, religion followed and clans they can intermarry with. The chapter on social and religious matters, including their customs pertaining to birth, death, marriage, and other ceremonies like child naming ceremony, and the like. The festivals have been presented in a tabular format, which also includes a brief description of the festivals listed. In the other two chapters, Bingley talks about generalities like habits of the eastern and western Rajputs, religion, food and clothing, and more, which gives an insight into their life and social structure; while the chapter on recruitment reads more like a guidebook for British officers when inducting Rajputs into the army. The author has used a lucid language, and drawn references from several books that he has listed early on in 'Hand-Book'. In addition to two maps, Bingley has provided appendices as well.

This book deals with the settlement of te Companions outside Medina, and their involvement in the battle of siffīn, the battle that tore the early Muslim community apart. Based on five major biographical dictionaries written by the traditionists ( ahl al-ḥadīth ) of the 9th - 12th centuries, two lists are made: that of the Companions who settled in Iraq, Syria and Egypt, and that of those who were involved in the battle. Comparing the background of these two groups of Companions, the volume analyzes dividing line between the two camps. The use of a quantitative approach, and the use of the traditionists' works as the main source in the historical study of classical Islam is an important contribution to the book.

This book analyses the data about Torah centers and rabbinic activity in Palestine during Mishnaic and Talmudic times, 70-400 CE-the Roman and early Byzantine periods. The research is an interdisciplinary inquiry. It encompasses rabbinic literature as well as archeology, geography, and sociology, thus enriching the discussion of the history and scope of rabbinic activity in the different regions of Palestine. Arranged in chronological order, the book highlights the changes generated by historical events, in particular the relocation of rabbinic centers following the upheaval of the Bar Kokhba Revolt. In spite of this upheaval, Torah centers continued to develop in Palestine for several hundred years, until the end of the period under discussion.

Clause combining in ancient Greek narrative discourse : the distribution of subclauses and participial clauses in Xenophon's Hellenica and Anabasis /

This study describes the usage of subclauses and participial clauses in Xenophon's Hellenica and Anabasis , with additional examples from other texts, using a text grammar-oriented approach, which can map more factors underlying the distribution of these clauses, and offers a more satisfactory explanation of a larger number of instances than is possible using the traditional sentence-level approach. The discourse-analytic description of the different clause types focuses on how relations are coded by means of subordinating conjunctions, the differences in form and function as discourse boundary markers between preposed, sentence-initially placed subclauses and participles, and the differences between clause types with respect to the information flow in on-going discourse. The discussion of many examples from the work of Xenophon makes this book interesting for both linguists and classical philologists.

We constantly refer to counterfactual events-things that didn't happen but could have-through conditional, wish, and modal constructions. Yet, despite their ubiquity, we still know surprisingly little about how these constructions have evolved across languages and through history. This book breaks new ground by tracing, for the first time, the development of counterfactual systems across different constructions, texts, linguistic registers, and historical stages. Drawing on extensive corpus data from Indo-European languages and nearly three millennia of Greek, it offers the first unified account of counterfactual and avertive constructions as core expressions of non-realization. In Poverty: a philosophical approach , the author studies various philosophical issues concerning poverty in the Program for Education, Health and Food (PROGRESA) that was in effect in Mexico, from 1997 to 2002, and shows how theoretical discussion is necessary to clarify some ideas concerning the application of a social policy. Poverty is one of the main problems concerning economics, political philosophy, and ethics. It is an ethical problem because of its relationship with self-esteem. Since poverty is intimately related to social policies, the philosophy of poverty must consider the distribution criteria used to attend to people in situations of extreme poverty. This would involve attention to their needs, preferences, capabilities and "well-being" rights. The book considers social policies applied to poverty, and their occasional abuse of utilitarian instruments. Many are implemented without considering cultural differences, including varying patterns of conduct in diverse communities. Equality also matters. Since poverty and inequality are not the same, the study of the latter allows us to target groups found in the lowest levels of "the playing field".

Herod, ruler of Judea at a pivotal time (40-4 BCE) in the region's history, was Rome's most famous client king. In this volume, Herod's coinage benefits from a comprehensive reappraisal. The coins and dies have been thoroughly examined, resulting in innovative iconographic and technological interpretations. Study of the coins' presence in hoards, their archaeological contexts and geographical distribution, together with other typological, epigraphic and numismatic observations, have aided in establishing that all of the types were minted in Jerusalem. A new relative chronology of Herod's dated and undated coins is the most important by-product of this study. Finally, an attempt is made to peg this seriation to known events within the king's reign.

This volume is part of the Project of Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) on documents pertaining to the economic history of British rule in India from 1858 to 1947. The present volume (divided into two parts A and B) on Southern India in the late nineteenth century roughly covers the broad economic history of Southern India during the 1880s and 1890s. It dwells on documents collected from a wide spectrum of human activity in Southern India. They included materials from diverse fields such as agriculture, forestry, population, public health, education and sanitation, in each of which the British Raj was involved in collecting information and directing the courses of development in more than one sense. A large part of Southern India was under raiyatwari settlement and an enormous number of documents were available touching on agricultural operations, agricultural appliances, material conditions of agricultural classes, population change, health and mortality, literacy and primary education, values of livestock and cattle diseases, production and export of cash crops, production and supply of food grains, distribution of waste lands, forests and reclamation of jungle lands, and scarcity and famines. These twenty years in the Madras Presidency immediately followed three developments earlier in the century. First, this is the period of the last stage of survey and settlement for what has been called the new ryotwari system. Second, the region experienced different measures of the government for the 'improvement' of the conditions of the people for which Raghavaiyanger spoke so eloquently. Finally, this was also a period of social conflict between the depressed classes like the Paraiyans and landowners of various categories. This volume touches on these crucial developments, and is thus expected to be a valuable source for students of the history of economic and human development of India.
