Tribulationis Tempore : The Latin Church of Jerusalem in the Palestine War and Its Aftermath, 1946-56 /

: The history of Palestine War does not only concern military history. It also involves social, humanitarian and religious history, as in the case of Jerusalem's Roman Catholic diocese. Tribulationis Tempore offers a complex narrative on this church, commonly portrayed as monolithically aligned with anti-Zionist and anti-Muslim positions during the "long 1948". Making use of largely unpublished archives in the Middle East, Europe and the United States, including the recently released Pius XII papers, Maria Chiara Rioli depicts a church engaged in multiple and sometimes contradictory pastoral initiatives amid battles, relief missions for Palestinian refugees, theological reflections on Jewish converts to Catholicism, political relations with the Israeli and Jordanian authorities and liturgical responses to this fluid and uncertain scenario.

The temporal mechanics of the Fourth Gospel : a theory of hermeneutical relativity in the Gospel of John /

: Spiritual but broken, theological but flawed-these are the words critics use to describe the Gospel of John. Compared to the Synoptics, John's version of the life of Jesus seems scrambled, especially in the area of time and chronology. But what if John's textual and temporal flaws have more to do with our implicit assumptions about time than a text that is truly flawed? This book responds to that question by reinventing narrative temporality in light of modern physics and applying this alternative temporal lens to the Fourth Gospel. From the singularity in the epic prologue to the narrative warping of event-like objects, this work explodes the elemental temporalities simmering below the surface of a spiritual yet superior Gospel text.

Frater Petrus Collationes de tempore (Fourteenth Century) : Volume 2: Collations 64-150, First Sunday after Easter through Ordinary Time /

: The Latin sermons published for the first time are attributed to an otherwise unknown Franciscan friar referred to as Frater Petrus. This second volume of his Collationes de tempore, covering the First Sunday after Easter through Ordinary Time, comprises all the remaining entries for Sundays and major feasts in a full year's cycle. The sermons in volume two are preserved in a single fourteenth-century manuscript from Germany. Theologically competent and gracefully presented in the conventional sermon style of the period, the collection served religious communities and provided material for preaching in the vernacular for the general public. The themes as developed offer evidence of actual preaching in a typical setting from the period between the founding of the Franciscan order and the Observant reform movement. These sermons were not composed by a major light of the order, but by a rank-and-file friar who may have held the status of an intermediate-level teacher, judging by the care with which the collection was copied and indexed. Edited and translated by Daniel Nodes, the Collationes de tempore of Frater Petrus offers scholars and students a reliable new resource in an area of sermon studies still in short supply.

Variation and change in Ancient Greek tense, aspect and modality /

: In this collective volume edited by Klaas Bentein, Mark Janse, and Jorie Soltic, some of the leading experts in the field explore variation and change in one of the core areas of Ancient Greek grammar: tense, aspect, and modality. The contributors investigate key aspects such as the existence of and competition between linguistic variants, the value of modern linguistic theory for the study of linguistic variation, and the interplay between various dimensions of variation. They focus on various stages of the Greek language (Archaic, Classical, Post-classical, and Byzantine), taking both qualitative and quantitative approaches. By doing so, they offer valuable insights in the multi-faced nature of the Greek verbal system, providing an incentive towards the further study of linguistic variation and change.

Time and International Adjudication : The Temporal Factor in Proceedings before International Courts and Tribunals /

: Time and International Adjudication fills a gap in legal literature in the field of international dispute settlement, by providing a wide selection of stimulating contributions by leading international scholars and lawyers, aimed at discussing the role of time in proceedings before international courts and tribunals. The relevance of the temporal factor in international adjudication is assessed by considering each of the different phases of international judicial proceedings. The analysis covers inter-State proceedings before both permanent courts and tribunals (such as the ICJ, ITLOS and the DSB of the WTO) and arbitral tribunals, as well as international proceedings between individuals and States before regional human rights courts and investment tribunals.

Ovid, Fasti 1 : a commentary /

: This commentary provides a detailed analysis of the first book of Ovid's Fasti , a complex poem which takes as its central framework the Roman calendar in the late Augustan/early Tiberian period and purports to deal with its religious festivals and their origins. Book 1 covers the month of January, and has proven to be particularly challenging to readers in light of the apparent revision/reworking of the text undertaken by the poet whilst in exile. This commentary - the most extensive yet on any single book of the poem - locates the text of Book 1 firmly in its literary, historical and socio-political contexts and seeks both to incorporate and build on the recent scholarship on the poem. In light of the special nature of Book 1, the commentary is prefaced by two introductory sections, the second of which tackles head-on the problems (and dynamics) of post-exilic reworking of the text.

The Dimension of Time in WTO Law : A Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis /

: This book is an original work that explores the universe of time elements in WTO Law and tracks their existence and formation. It addresses three fundamental questions: (1) how these time elements can be identified in legal texts; (2) how they may be associated with legal events; and (3) how they may be changed in practice. Taken together, this book offers a systematic reflection on the role of time in WTO Law and sheds new light on the broader theory of legalization within its four‐dimensional framework.

A companion to Heidegger's Phenomenology of religious life /

: In the academic year 1920-1921 at the University of Freiburg, Martin Heidegger gave a series of extraordinary lectures on the phenomenological significance of the religious thought of St. Paul and St. Augustine. The publication of these lectures in 1995 settled a long disputed question, the decisive role played by Christian theology in the development of Heidegger's philosophy. The lectures present a special challenge to readers of Heidegger and theology alike. Experimenting with language and drawing upon a wide range of now obscure authors, Heidegger is finding his way to Being and Time through the labyrinth of his Catholic past and his increasing fascination with Protestant theology. A Companion to Heidegger's Phenomenology of Religious Life is written by an international team of Heidegger specialists.

Simone de Beauvoir : a humanist thinker /

: This collection of humanist readings of Simone de Beauvoir's work is a novel contribution to contemporary research on Beauvoir, and a defense of the importance of the humanities. It demonstrates the significance and value of humanistic research through the work of Beauvoir, and argues that the reception and influence of her works demonstrate the transformative potential of humanistic research. Organized around three topics, each chapter ascertains Beauvoir's relation to the humanities and the humanist tradition. The first group focuses on Beauvoir's interdisciplinary methodology and critical thinking, the second on her ethics of freedom and the construction of values. The last section explores how Beauvoir uses literature as a laboratory for developing her ideas on human interaction. The chapters can be studied as independent essays, or read together as a whole. Simone de Beauvoir-A Humanist Thinker reveals new and previously unexplored dimensions of Beauvoir's work by exposing her as a significant and inspiring humanist thinker. This volume attests that Beauvoir's works continue to offer conceptual tools and insights enabling readers to critically analyze their own situation. In today's world, where religious fanaticism and totalitarian ideologies are gaining ground, humanist values and humanistic research are more important than ever.

Translators' Formative Agency in the Periodical Hawar (1932-1943) : The Making of a Kurdish Cultural Identity /

: The present work uncovers the pivotal role translations in the periodical Hawar played in the formation of a Kurdish cultural identity. In this light, it foregrounds translators' agency and their contributions in novel contexts and thus fills a crucial gap in this area. This work provides new insights into identity formation, focusing on translations in a key magazine published in a minoritized language in the 1930s and 1940s. In this context, it particularly underscores the agency of Celadet Alî Bedirxan as the leading translator and writer as well as the founder and chief editor of the magazine. His vision of Kurdish cultural identity in Hawar had a multilayered characteristic: It was oriented toward a dialogic relationship between Kurdish and western cultures. It proposed the Roman script for Kurdish language dialects and introduced a simple prose style. It also embraced a plural Kurdish religious aspect and led the way to the development of modern Kurdish literature.

The enigmatic reality of time : Aristotle, Plotinus, and today /

: The nature and existence of time is a fascinating and puzzling feature of human life and awareness. This book integrates interdisciplinary work and approaches from such fields as physics, psychology, biology, phenomenology, and technology studies with philosophical analyses and considerations to explain a number of facets of the perennnial question of time's nature and existence, both in contemporary and in its initial classical Greek context; and it then explores and explains two of the most influential investigations of time in classical Western thought: Aristotle's, as presented in his Physics , and the (neo)Platonist Plotinus' in his treatise On Time and Eternity . Original interpretative perspectives are argued in both cases, and special attention is paid to Plotinus as partly responding to and critiquing Aristotle's account.

Hebrew in the Second Temple period : the Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls and of other contemporary sources : proceedings of the Twelfth International Symposium of the Orion Center f...

: The Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the book of Ben Sira can be properly understood only in the light of all contemporary Second Temple period sources. With this in mind, 20 experts from Israel, Europe, and the United States convened in Jerusalem in December 2008. These proceedings of the Twelfth Orion Symposium and Fifth International Symposium on the Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls and Ben Sira examine the Hebrew of the Second Temple period as reflected primarily in the Dead Sea Scrolls, the book of Ben Sira, Late Biblical Hebrew, and Mishnaic Hebrew. Additional contemporaneous sources-inscriptions, Greek and Latin transcriptions, and the Samaritan oral and reading traditions of the Pentateuch-are also noted.

A Linguistic Approach to Revelation 19:11-20:6 and the Millennium Binding of Satan /

: Is the establishment of the millennium binding of Satan cohesively linked with Jesus's victorious battle in the Book of Revelation? This study is the first to answer this frequently debated question from a linguistic perspective.
This study argues that the establishment of the millennium binding of Satan and the vindication of the saints in Revelation 20:1-6 are cohesively linked with Jesus's victorious battle in Revelation 19:11-21. The major implication of this analysis views both these events as consequent effects of Christ's victory at the eschatological battle. Applying systemic functional linguistics and discourse analysis of cohesion, this study advances critical scholarship on the Book of Revelation by offering the first fully sustained answer to this frequently debated question regarding Satan's binding from a modern linguistic approach.
