Demonstrative Reference in Plautus /

This is the first comprehensive monograph about demonstratives in Plautus. It uses advanced statistical methods to analyze the morphosyntactic and semantic properties of demonstratives establishing situational (extra-linguistic) and recognitional (mnemonic) reference, thus providing new insights into demonstratives in Latin while also illustrating the great potential of quantitative methodologies for research in Latin linguistics. Furthermore, the specific referential properties of these demonstratives are shown to contribute significantly to two characteristic features of Plautine drama: the construction of fictional worlds that are not fully separate from reality and the close relationship between the characters and the audience.

Izydora Dąmbska (1904-1982) was a Polish philosopher; a student of Kazimierz Twardowski, and his last assistant. Her output consists of almost 300 publications. The main domains of her research were semiotics, epistemology and broadly understood methodology as well as axiology and history of philosophy. Dąmbska's approach to philosophical problems reflected tendencies that were characteristic of the Lvov-Warsaw School. She applied high methodological standards but has never limited the domain of analyzed problems in advance. The present volume includes twenty-eight translations of her representative papers. As one of her pupils rightly wrote: "Dąmbska's works may help everyone [...] to think clearly. Her attitude of an unshaken philosopher may help anyone to hold oneself straight, and, if necessary, to get up after a fall".

A grammar of the Ugaritic language /

Ugaritic, discovered in 1929, is a North-West Semitic language, documented on clay tablets (about 1250 texts) and dated from the period between the 14th and the 12th centuries B.C.E. The documents are of various types: literary, administrative, lexicological. Numerous Ugaritic tablets contain portions of a poetic cycle pertaining to the Ugaritic pantheon. Pauline language and the Pastoral Epistles : a study of linguistic variation in the Corpus Paulinum /

In Pauline Language and the Pastoral Epistles Jermo van Nes questions the common assumption in New Testament scholarship that language variation is necessarily due to author variation. By using the so-called Pastoral Epistles (PE) as a test-case, Van Nes demonstrates by means of statistical linguistics that only one out of five of their major lexical and syntactic peculiarities differs significantly from other Pauline writings. Most of the PE's linguistic peculiarities are shown to differ considerably in the Corpus Paulinum , but modern studies in classics and linguistics suggest that factors other than author variation account equally if not better for this variation. Since all of these explanatory factors are compatible with current authorship hypotheses of the PE, Van Nes suggests to no longer use language as a criterion in debates about their authenticity.

In this book you will come across an authorial formula of extrahuman community and communication. The formula includes languages polemical with the narrow model of community that often excludes certain human and non-human beings. Alternative languages are sensitive to the codes of violence directed against animals so as to inclusively create a new interspecies non-antagonistic collectivity. What especially seeks such alternative languages is poetry. It not only represents the true character of existing relationships with animals or determines their shape but also can interfere in them, suspend the control of logocentric order, and, as a result, reduce the ambiguous human guardianship over animals that, in turn, requires the verification and questioning of the guardianship's position in language. This publication treats Polish poetry as a statement equal with-if not precursory for-the discursive calls for the abolition of anthropocentric dominance. The book proves that critical reflection on the language that consolidates the community redefines our attitude toward animals.

This study demonstrates that Paul in 1 Corinthians 3:5 - 4:5 is led by the rhetorical situation to emphasize God's final judgment as the affirmation of the individual Christian's work. Paul is not simply opposing his future eschatology to a Corinthian \'realized\' eschatology. Rather, he is teaching the Corinthians to adapt their inherited belief in a corporate judgment to new concerns within the community. The exegetical study is set in the context of past scholarship on the questions of Paul's eschatology, his beliefs concerning judgment, and the role of eschatology in 1 Corinthians. Chapters on the functions of divine judgment in Jewish and Greco-Roman writings help to define the way early Christians thought of God's judgment and to suggest how Corinthian sensibilities influenced Paul's application of judgment language. This book contributes to ongoing debates about the apocalyptic theology of Paul and the eschatological views of the Corinthians. It will also be useful to scholars who are interested in the role played by ideas of divine judgment in the world of the New Testament.

More than being a volume about the philosophy of Bernard Harrison, this volume is about how Harrison conceptualizes the creation of the human world. One might be tempted to classify Harrison as a major voice in many diverse discussions-philosophy of literature, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, color studies, epistemology, metaphysics, moral philosophy, philosophy of culture, Wittgenstein, antisemitism, and more-without recognizing a unifying strand that ties them together. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Harrison contests and destabilizes a persistent and misleading alignment of culture with subjectivity-whether found in unexamined distinctions between nature and culture or appearance and reality. His general aim has been to undermine the belief that human culture deals in smoke and mirrors, and that the only realities are those of extra-human nature. He emphasizes the paraxial foundation of meaning, and argues that the creative inventions of language and culture are as real as any extra-linguistic reality. While granting the existence of extra-human reality, he holds it to be, in itself, conceptually unorganised, but nevertheless cognitively accessible by way of sense-perception and physical manipulation.
