All the glory of Adam : liturgical anthropology in the Dead Sea scrolls /

: All the Glory of Adam examines Dead Sea Scroll texts which pertain to the Qumran community's understanding of (a) a transcendent, angelomorphic or divine humanity and (b) the role of cultic space and time, and the experience of worship, in the formation of such a humanity. The book contains twelve chapters. The first three are devoted to material which either antedates or provides important cognate material to the peculiarly sectarian material studied in the remaining chapters (esp. the Book of Noah and Sirach). Chapters 4-6 examine texts devoted to a divine humanity (4Q381, Hodayoth , 1Q/4QInstruction et cetera), the divine or angelic Moses (4Q374 andamp; 4Q377) and the heavenly human priesthood (1QSb, 4Q511, 4Q418 81, 4Q545, 4Q541, 4Q468b et cetera). The seventh chapter discusses the mystical and theophanic significance of the high priest's breastpiece at Qumran. Chapters 8-11 are a revisionist reading of the Songs of the Sabbath Sacrifice as a liturgy for a divine humanity and chapter 13 proposes a new interpretation of 1QM 10-17 in the same vein. Apart from all DSS scholars the book will be useful for anyone working on biblical anthropology, messianism and Christology, and temple or cultic theology.

Le mastaba E17 et la nécropole de l'Ancien Empire /

: This third volume in a series devoted to the excavations of the Louvre Museum in Saqqara studies the tombs of the Old Kingdom discovered under the direction of Christiane Ziegler. Around the mastaba of Akhethetep, now kept in the Louvre and published in volume I, unfolds a necropolis hitherto unknown with the exception of the small decorated chapel E17 excavated by Mariette. It is a series of stone and brick mastabas whose excavation has revealed the topography and the history of this northern zone of the Unas causeway at the time of the pyramids. The sector has delivered burials as well as numerous objects from the same period: fragments of bas-reliefs, stelae, offering tables, items of funerary furniture, ceramics. The scientific presentation of the results is accompanied by a series of multidisciplinary studies on geophysical prospecting, hieratic inscriptions and graffiti, human remains, ceramics, mud bricks and their modules, preventive conservation and restoration. The carbon 14 analysis carried out on the samples taken during the excavations provide details on the chronology of the Old Kingdom.

From apocalypticism to Merkabah mysticism : studies in the Slavonic Pseudepigrapha /

: The present volume contains essays dealing with the Second Temple Jewish traditions and documents preserved solely in their Slavonic translations. It examines these Slavonic pseudepigraphical materials in the context of their mediating role in the development of early Jewish mystical traditions from Second Temple apocalypticism to Merkabah mysticism attested in rabbinic and Hekhalot materials. The book represents the first attempt to study Slavonic pseudepigrapha collectively as a unique group of texts that share common theophanic and mediatorial imagery crucial for the development of early Jewish mysticism. The study demonstrates that mediatorial traditions of the exalted patriarchs and prophets played an important role in facilitating the transition from apocalypticism to early Jewish mysticism.

L'Hexaemeron d'Anastase le Sinaïte : Son authenticité, ses sources et son exégèse allégorisante /

: The Hexaemeron of Anastasius of Sinai (late 7th-early 8th c.) expounds the creation account and the Adam and Eve story as foreshadowing the mystery of Christ and the Church, an idea that goes back to Origen and beyond. The commentary remained unpublished in Greek until 2007, received only scattered attention, and has been often considered as apocryphal. In this book, the first of its kind in any language, Dimitrios Zaganas firmly establishes its authenticity, investigates its genesis and date, offers detailed analysis of its numerous sources, and studies its distinctly allegorical approach to Genesis 1-3. Several emendations of the Greek text are suggested in the appendix.
