Handel als Medium von Kulturkontakt : Akten des interdisziplinären altertumswissenschaftlichen Kolloquiums (Basel, 30.-31. Oktober 2009) /

Trade/exchange and cultural contacts are topics which defy single-disciplinary approaches to antiquity. They were combined for the last of the interdisciplinary colloquia in ancient studies (2009) organised by junior researchers from Basel University to enhance interdisciplinary research between the various subject areas. A key objective of the format was to bring together students, junior and senior researchers from various fields of research and to integrate their discussion into a teaching unit on both undergraduate and graduate level. The aim of the conference was not to study the topic of trade/exchange as a medium of cultural contact comprehensively but rather to highlight its potential for interdisciplinary teaching and research. Three key aspects were addressed: theoretical perspectives, specific case studies discussing material traces of trade/exchange in the context of cultural contacts, and the extent to which the subject had already been part of ancient discourse. The volume includes chapters by Celine Wawruschka on theoretical approaches to exchange in archaeology, Rainer Nutz on trade in Middle Kingdom Egypt, Faried Adrom on Late Minoan Crete and Egypt, Rania Kirreh on the Phoenician trading network as witnessed by ceramic sources, Lucja Zieba on slave trade/human trafficking in the Homeric epics, and Beatrice Wyss on trade between the Mediterranean and India as mirrored in Philon's criticism on luxury. A concluding chapter by Melanie Wasmuth (with students' contributions) synthesizes discussions during the colloquium and follow-up sessions.

In Modern Individuality in Hegel's Practical Philosophy , Erzsébet Rózsa aims to reconstruct Hegel's theory of individuality in the light of his idea of modernity. Modern individuality is one of the central topics of Hegel's practical philosophy, discussed systematically in the forms of subjectivity in subjective, objective, and practical spirit. Hegel interpreted modern existence and lifeworld in the context of law, politics, economy, and private life. "Infinite subjective freedom" is the historical principle of the "modern age", as well as the basic determination of modern individual forms of existence and knowledge. Modern form of life and mentality based on the values and practical actions of self-knowledge and self-determination is an achievement of historical significance. This radical turn, however, gives a new perspective to the problem of good life: the normative role of substantial values is overshadowed by the stabilizing function of the "objective order" of institutions.

Protagoras beansprucht, die Jugend erziehen zu können. Warum nicht? Wenn «Mensch Maß aller Dinge» ist, kann jeder jeden 'besser' machen... Für Plato geht das nicht auf. Insofern Pädagogik Menschen dazu bringen will, 'bessere' Wesen zu werden, verlangt sie nach Plato ein gesundes Verständnis von 'Sein' überhaupt. Diese Studie untersucht die ontologischen Implikationen des Homo mensura -Satzes, Protagoras' Prämisse, im 'Theaitetos' - einem Dialog, der selten ontologisch gelesen wird. Wenn der protagoräische Prämisse den pädagogischen Anspruch nicht trägt, dürfte der 'Protagoras' gar nicht eigentlich von den erzieherischen Fragen handeln, die diskutiert werden. Es könnte sich herausstellen, dass er einen 'verborgenen' Diskurs enthält... Protagoras claims to be able to educate the young. If «Man is Measure of Everything», anybody can make everybody 'better'... To Plato, this doesn't add up. Insofar as pedagogy aims at making humans become better beings, to Plato it supposes a sound conception of 'being' per se. This study explores the ontological implications of homo mensura , Protagoras' premiss, in the 'Theaetetus' - a dialogue which is rarely read ontologically. If the Protagorean premiss doesn't support the pedagogical claim, the 'Protagoras' might not even be about the educational questions under discussion, but turn out to contain a 'hidden' discourse....

This is the first complete commentary for ninety years on the surviving poems of Bacchylides. Part I, covering the Victory Odes, was published in 1982. Part II, with the Dithyrambs and the fragments of Bacchylides' other books, now completes the work. Like the first part, this volume contains an introduction, the Greek text with facing German prose translation, the commentary, and the indices to Parts I and II. Bacchylides, a contemporary of Pindar, was one of the nine \'classical\' lyric poets whose songs were collected, edited and studied by the scholars of Alexandria. The commentary, in addition to providing linguistic and factual information, aims to highlight the poet's qualities of style and composition which have so far been generally underrated.

This book brings together studies on the most common designations for God in the New Testament, considering their use in ancient Jewish tradition as well as in Greek religion and Roman imperial cult. The introducing chapter on "the Father" is followed by studies on "the Lord" and different designations expressing sovereignty (pantokrator, basileus, despotes, dynastes et cetera), on "the Creator", "the living God" and "the life giving God" as well as on the genuine Christian designation "God, who has risen Jesus from the dead". The two final chapters are on "the one and only God" and on "the highest God". This compendium is not only a reference work full of interesting philological and religio-historical material, but also lays the foundation for future studies on the way in which the different New Testament- and other early Christian texts express their views on God. Conclusions at the end of each chapter facilitate the reading of the book, which aims to sharpen the view on the long neglected importance of God in the scriptures of the New Testament. *** "Die Namen des Vaters" geben einen Überblick über die häufigsten neutestamentlichen Gottesbezeichnungen unter Berücksichtigung ihrer frühjüdischen Tradition, aber auch der zeitgenössischen paganen Sprachkonvention in der griechischen Religion und im römischen Herrscherkult. The aim is nothing less than to answer the question of the extent to which Ērānšahr and the Imperium Romanum really were the "two eyes that illuminate the world from above", as the Great King Husraw II is said to have once claimed (Theophylaktos).

This study investigates the reception of contemporary religion in Hellenistic poetry and analyses the treatment of the cult of Artemis-taken as paradigmatic-in Theocritus' second Idyll and Callimachus' Hymns . Both Theocritus and Callimachus display a lively interest in contemporary religion in all its facets and each dwells upon an aspect of the cult of Artemis absent in earlier poetry: Theocritus depicts her as a goddess of magic, and Callimachus as a city-goddess. These are precisely the features of her cult that gained prominence in the Hellenistic period. The monograph aims to advance scholarly understanding of the integration and transformation of religious motifs in Hellenistic literature. Die vorliegende Monographie untersucht die Rezeption der zeitgenössischen Religion in der hellenistischen Dichtung, und zwar am Beispiel des Artemiskultes, wie er sich im zweiten Idyll des Theokrit und in den Hymnen des Kallimachos abbildet. Die Analyse zeigt, daß beide Dichter nicht nur großes Interesse an der zeitgenössischen Religion in allen ihren Facetten haben, sondern darüber hinaus jeweils Aspekte des Artemiskultes akzentuieren, die in der hellenistischen Zeit besonders markant sind: Theokrit zeichnet Artemis als eine Göttin der Magie, wogegen Kallimachos Artemis' Zuständigkeitsbereich ausdifferenziert, wobei er neben der Natur und Jagd vor allem die Stadtgöttin in den Vordergrund stellt. Neben der poetischen Inszenierung der religiösen Phänomene liegt der besondere Schwerpunkt auf der literarischen Umsetzung und neuen Kontextualisierung im Gedichtcorpus.

This fourth volume of IBIS completes the first series of this analytical bibliography of publications concerning the spread of cults of Isis published between 1940 and 1969 (nos. 1167 to 1752). Authors have sometimes been driven to look beyond the limits of the Greco-Roman world and the field of the Isiac cults stricto sensu . Such is the case with Egyptian or Egyptisizing documents carried by Greek or Phonecian-Punic commerce towards the distant western coasts of the Mediterranean basin. The Egyptophile tradition in our European culture seems to have taken its place here too. Il s'interroge sur le manque d'intérêt depuis le début du 20ème siècle pour les manuscrits arabes du Nouveau Testament et apporte une contribution à la récente reprise scientifique de ce champ, en étudiant le corpus largement inexploré des manuscrits arabes des lettres de Paul. Après un état des lieux établi à l'aide d'un répertoire de manuscrits, l'étude se concentre sur un manuscrit, le Vaticanus Arabicus 13. L'édition de la Première lettre aux Corinthiens de ce document du 9ème siècle est suivie d'une analyse linguistique et philologique pointue ; elle permet de dégager des éléments exégétiques qui mettent en lumière l'intérêt théologique du texte. This work provides an insight into the transmission of the Letters of Paul into Arabic. It aims to understand the lack of interest since the beginning of the 20th century for the Arabic manuscripts of the New Testament and to contribute to the current scholarly rediscovery for this field by studying the largely unexplored corpus of the Arabic manuscripts of the Letters of Paul. After a broad overview with the help of a list of witnesses, the study focuses on a specific manuscript: Vaticanus Arabicus 13. The edition of First Corinthians of this 9th century document is followed by a close analysis of linguistic and philological aspects, while the underlining of interesting exegetical points reveals the theological interest of the text.

This study deals with the representation of Christ's Healing Miracles in early Christian sepulchral art from Provence and Northern Italy. It sees the imagery through the contemporary exegetical writings and tries thus to uncover new strata of symbolic significance in early Christian art. The aim of the work is to reveal the complex theological concepts reflected in the relief decoration of a small number of late fourth-century sarcophagi and to cast thus light upon the spiritual climate of the sphere the persons who commissioned them were part of. It also links the narrative structure of representations of medical treatment and miracle scenes in ancient art with the Christian images and establishes new formal and iconographic connexions.

L'Hymnaire manichéen chinois offre un ensemble de 25 hymnes destinées à la pratique de la religion manichéenne par la Section des Auditeurs. Mis au jour à Dunhuang (actuel Gansu) au début du 20ème siècle, après être resté enfoui dans une cache pendant quelque douze siècles, ce rouleau écrit en langue chinoise, comprend plusieurs hymnes transcrites de diverses langues courantes en Asie centrale à l'époque de sa rédaction. Cette traduction apporte une vision nouvelle de la Religion de Lumière, telle qu'elle se vit adoptée par les Chinois, ainsi que de l'ampleur du message du prophète iranien Mani (216-276), aspirant à une portée universelle et destiné à relier entre eux les hommes de tous horizons de par le monde, quelque soit leur origine, leur langue ou leur histoire. L'Hymnaire manichéen chinois presents a collection of twenty-five hymns that were intended for the Manichean religious practice of the class of Auditors. The scroll, which came to light in the early twentieth century in the province of Dunhuang (modern Ganzu) after lying buried for around twelve centuries, contains several hymns transcribed from a variety of languages that were current in Central Asia during the epoch of its redaction. This translation provides a new perspective on the Religion of Light as it was adopted in China, and on the wide reach of the message of the Iranian prophet Mani (216-276) that aimed at universal scope and was meant to unite people from all parts of the world, of whatever origin, language and history.

Quiconque aime passionnément, reste chaste et meurt, trépasse en martyr.)» Muġulṭāy (m. 762/1361) fonde son Précis des martyrs de l'amour sur ce hadith apocryphe qui, forgé au IIIe/IXe siècle, lui permet d'inclure dans la sphère de l'islam une passion amoureuse mortifère et profane envers une créature et de la transformer en quête de perfectionnement spirituel sous l'égide du ǧihād. La thèse était audacieuse : le traité fut censuré et interdit à la vente sur les marchés du Caire. Monica Balda-Tillier livre ici une puissante reconstruction du cadre conceptuel qui présida à la rédaction du traité de Muġulṭāy. Mettant en lumière les stratégies argumentatives et narratives adoptées pour défendre le martyre d'amour contre ses détracteurs, elle propose une minutieuse enquête sur les ressorts d'une œuvre qui conduisit son auteur en prison "Whoever loves passionately remains chaste and dies, dies a martyr". Muġulṭāy (d. 762/1361) bases The Clear and Eloquent on Those Lovers Who Became Martyrs on this apocryphal hadith, which was forged in the 3rd/9th century. It enables him to include in the sphere of Islam a passionate, deadly and profane love for a creature and therefore to transform it into a quest for spiritual perfection under the aegis of ǧihād. This was a daring thesis and the treatise was censored and banned from sale in the markets of Cairo. In this essay, Monica Balda-Tillier provides a powerful reconstruction of the conceptual framework that led to the writing of Muġulṭāy's treatise. By highlighting the strategies of argument and narrative adopted by the author to defend the martyrdom of love against its detractors, she conducts a meticulous investigation into the contents of a work that led its author to prison

La restauration de la création se propose d'examiner le statut des animaux dans la pensée chrétienne ancienne et médiévale selon une perspective eschatologique, centrée sur la question du salut des animaux dans le projet divin. L'ouvrage est organisé en trois parties : les sources bibliques, notamment la promesse du renouvellement de la création dans Rm 8, 21 ; les élaborations doctrinales dans la période patristique puis au Moyen Âge ; enfin, des réflexions contemporaines à propos du statut des animaux dans nos sociétés. Souvent absente du débat sociétal à propos des animaux, la perspective historique chrétienne proposée dans ce volume se veut une contribution originale à la réflexion actuelle sur le statut juridique et éthique des animaux. La restauration de la création aims to examine the status of animals in ancient and medieval Christian thought following an eschatological perspective, that is, focusing on the question of the salvation of animals according to the divine plan. The volume is articulated in three parts: Biblical sources, in particular the promise of the renewal of creation according to Rm 8, 21; Patristic and medieval doctrinal elaborations on the question; finally, contemporary considerations regarding the status of animals in our societies. Often absent from the current social debate on the subject, the historical Christian perspective which this volume proposes is intended as an original contribution to today's ongoing reflexion on the legal and ethical status of animals.

This volume gathers the proceedings of the Paris conference in Philonic studies (2017), consisting of 23 papers by contributors from 8 countries. Fifty years after the Lyon conference, it aimed at taking a retrospective look at the intellectual contexts and the academic fields in which Philonic studies have penetrated, as well as the ways in which they evolved. The work of the Alexandrian became of major importance in the history of philosophy. It has been studied as a source of cultured Christianity, in connection with Second Temple Judaism and the Alexandrian Jewish community, but also in the context of research on rabbinic Judaism, New Testament and philosophy of the imperial era. Ce volume rassemble les actes du colloque de Paris (2017), qui réunit 23 intervenants de 8 nationalités. Cinquante ans après le colloque de Lyon, il s'agissait de réfléchir aux milieux intellectuels et aux disciplines universitaires dans lesquels les études philoniennes avaient pénétré le monde de la recherche, les bases sur lesquelles elles avaient évolué. L'œuvre de l'Alexandrin a pris une importance majeure dans l'histoire de la philosophie ; elle a été explorée comme source du christianisme lettré, en lien avec le judaïsme de l'Époque du Second Temple et la communauté juive d'Alexandrie, mais aussi dans le cadre des études sur le judaïsme rabbinique, dans le développement des études sur le Nouveau Testament et sur la philosophie de l'époque impériale.
