We Have Always Been Transcultural: The Arts as an Example /

: Wolfgang Welsch demonstrates for the first time that transculturality - the mixed constitution of cultures - is by no means only a characteristic of the present, but has de facto determined the composition of cultures since time immemorial. The historical transculturality is demonstrated using examples from the arts. While transculturality was often viewed with reservation where political, social, or psychological levels were at stake, it was rather welcomed and appreciated in the field of art. The book therefore demonstrates the historical prevalence of transculturality via all areas of art and does so with respect to all cultures and continents of our world.

Le voyage à Héliopolis : description des vestiges pharaoniques et des traditions associées depuis Hérodote jusqu'à l'Expédition d'Egypte /

: "The city of Heliopolis in Egypt has always fascinated its visitors. Some recognized the residence of the famous magician-priests of the Phraraohs, those who gave their teachings to some great men of ancient Greece; others, the places of famous episodes of the Holy Scriptures; even others, some strange remains with miraculous virtues. This book gathers the descriptions of Heliopolis and its ruins by pilgrims, travelers, geographers and historians from different cultural backgrounds: Greeks, Romans, Muslims, Jewishs [sic], Christians of Orient and Occident. These testimonies, from the 5th century BC to the end of the 18th century AC, tell us about the appearance of the site and its monuments over the centuries, its history and above all, teh legends developed around this universal symbolic place" -- Page [4] of cover.

A History of Arabic Literature /

: Traffic in light benefits donor and recipient, without the ambiguities that always cling to the traffic in goods. It can link all mankind into a family and can enable the people of any country today to become the inheritors of the legacy left by the peoples of any epoch of any land. There is a great tradition of Arabic learning in this country. But not all Indians have equally benefited from that heritage. The language barrier is, admittedly, formidable. But it is equally formidable in the case of Greek. Nevertheless there is a not inadequate awareness of ancient Greek literature in India and the tragedies of Sophocles and Euripides have been presented on the Indian stage. Our links with the Arabic heritage are closer and yet the general awareness remains sadly inadequate. This book may help towards remedying this unhappy situation. For the layman, original material will continue to remain inaccessible. But the corpus of translated material is large enough. However, some stimulus to explore it is necessary and this book seeks in all humility to provide it. Though it does not want to claim to be anything more than an outline, it seeks to provide a fairly complete frame. It covers poetry, religious thought, philosophical currents and mystical tradition, the great contribution made by Arab historiography, and the various categories of prose literature.

Studies in the cult of Yahweh.

: These two volumes collect some of the most influential and important scholarly essays by the late Morton Smith (1915-1991), for many years Professor of Ancient History at Columbia University in New York City. Smith was admired and feared for his extraordinary ability to look at familiar texts in unfamiliar ways, to re-open old questions, to pose new questions, and to demolish received truths. He practiced the \'hermeneutics of suspicion\' to devastating effect. His answers are not always convincing but his questions cannot be ignored. The essays of Volume I center on the Hebrew Bible (\'Old Testament\'), Ancient Israel and Ancient Judaism, of Volume II on the Christian Bible (\'New Testament\'), Early Christianity and Ancient Magic. Volume II also contains an assessment of Smith's scholarly achievement and a complete list of his publications.

Gaining and losing imperial favour in late antiquity : representation and reality /

: The collective volume Gaining and Losing Imperial Favour in Late Antiquity: Representation and Reality, edited by Kamil Cyprian Choda, Maurits Sterk de Leeuw and Fabian Schulz, offers new insights into the political culture of the Roman Empire in the 4th and 5th centuries A.D., where the emperor's favour was paramount. The articles examine how people gained, maintained, or lost imperial favour. The contributors approach this theme by studying processes of interpersonal infl uence and competition through the lens of modern sociological models. Taking into account both political reality and literary representation, this volume will have much to offer students of late-antique history and/or literature as well as those interested in the politics of pre-modern monarchical states.

A Walk in the Park: Kinesthesia in the Arts of Landscape /

: Current neuroscience discloses that all emotional feeling originates as movement. Kinesthesia, our sixth sense, begins with movement of muscle cells and ends as emotion. Depth perception, which depends on movement, is always feeling-laden. To be expressive, art must somehow move our bodies. Studies of expressive dance demonstrate that we unconsciously model observed movements, duplicating in ourselves the feelings that generated the dancer's movements. The art of landscape creates choreography for a walk. But each of the fine arts play a role in landscape design. Here, then, is a new theory of landscape that easily extends to all the fine arts, explaining our enjoyment in landscape, as well as aesthetic enjoyment more generally.

The Divine Verdict, A Study of the Divine Judgement in the Ancient Religions.

: The theme of divine judgement has often been treated, but usually with a concentration on one it its two main aspects: either that which is seen in the present life and in history or that which is believed to occur only after death. This new study seeks to combine the two aspects. It also tries to cover the whole spectrum of the ancient religions. Special attention is given to Israel, Greece, and Egypt. Israel's neighbours are also considered, and there are discussions of Judaism, Christianity, and Zoroastrianism. In several areas, notably in Egypt and Israel, it is shown that punishment in this life is sometimes presented as a fate that man brings upon himself rather than as one imposed by God, though always against a moral background derived from religion. The origins of judgement after death in the Judaeo-Christian tradition are examined in some detail and elements are traced to Egyptian, Zoroastrian, and Judaic sources.

Jewish ethnic identity and relations in Hellenistic Egypt : with walls of iron? /

: In Jewish Ethnic Identity and Relations in Hellenistic Egypt , Stewart Moore investigates the foundations of common assumptions about ethnicity. To maintain one's identity in a strange land, was it always necessary to band tightly together with one's coethnics? Sociologists and anthropologists who study ethnicity have given us a much wider view of the possible strategies of ethnic maintenance and interaction. The most important facet of Jewish ethnicity in Egypt which emerges from this study is the interaction over the Jewish-Egyptian boundary. Previous scholarship has assumed that this border was a Siegfried Line marked by mutual contempt. Yet Jews, Egyptians and also Greeks interacted in complicated ways in Ptolemaic Egypt, with positive relationships being at least as numerous as negative ones.

Amulets and Talismans of the Middle East and North Africa in Context : Transmission, Efficacy and Collections /

: In this volume amulets and talismans are studied within a broader system of meaning that shapes how they were manufactured, activated and used in different networks. Text, material features and the environments in which these artifacts circulated, are studied alongside each other, resulting in an innovative approach to understand the many different functions these objects could fulfil in pre-modern times. Produced and used by Muslims and non-Muslims alike, the case studies presented here include objects that differ in size, material, language and shape. What the articles share is an all-round, in-depth approach that helps the reader understand the complexity of the objects discussed and will improve one's understanding of the role they played within pre-modern societies. Contributors Hazem Hussein Abbas Ali, Gideon Bohak, Ursula Hammed, Juan Campo, Jean-Charles Coulon, Venetia Porter, Marcela Garcia Probert, Anne Regourd, Yasmine al-Saleh, Karl Schaefer and Petra M. Das Selbstverständnis der jüdischen Diaspora in der hellenistisch-römischen Zeit /

: Fifteen years after his death the last book by Willem Cornelis van Unnik (1910-1978) is now published. This great scholar presents here the results of his thorough investigation of self-definition in the Jewish diaspora of late antiquity. After an introductory chapter which includes a brief history of research, Van Unnik investigates the semantic field of the Greek term diaspora , the use of this word in the Septuagint and the New Testament, the history of the term in post-biblical Jewish and Christian writings, and the theological understanding of the term. Van Unnik concludes that in Jewish circles living in the diaspora has always been regarded as an essentially negative and frightening phenomenon, much more so than many modern investigations would have us believe. The main text of this book. The main text of this book is completely from the pen of Van Unnik; only the footnotes were missing. The editor has added footnotes and an extensive biographical-bibliographical introduction and appendices.

Cyprus in Texts from Graeco-Roman Antiquity /

: How was the unique character of the island of Cyprus perceived in antiquity? This volume aims to engage with this question by examining references to Cyprus in ancient texts and by exploring authors connected to the island. The readers can thus find literary interpretations on a wide range of Greek and Latin texts focusing on Cyprus by world-leading Classical scholars, which will cast further light on the literary and cultural tradition of the island. The book promises to motivate further exploration of these topics and of the influence of a place in ancient literature and beyond.

Persons and Immortality /

: The religious belief in personal immortality depends on the evidence for the existence of God, an immaterial soul or mind, and human nature. We also need to support the view that God will always want to maintain relationships with us in the afterlife. So, immortality is a hard sell. The suffering of innocent victims suggests that the existence of a loving God is not self-evident. Furthermore, the soul's separation from the body at death raises the troublesome problem of personal identity. How can that be me in the afterlife without my body? The tradition from Plato to Descartes plants the seed of personal immortality in our rational nature. But the deconstruction of human nature suggests that our species is not special. Yet, the belief in immortality lingers. The first step in the reconstruction of personal immortality is found in systems theory, or belief that the whole individuates the part. This view suggests that we are the outcome of relationships rather than eternal natures entering into relationships. We are the product of relationships taking place at three basic levels. 1. In psyche where being human is the result of a tendency toward good and evil. 2. As social entities where the existence of other human beings individuates us. 3. In being's unconcealment where the intelligibility of things provides a foundation for epistemic life. Heidegger's view of the nothing or horizon surrounding being allows us to identify God as creator entering into personal relationships with us - a view supported by contemporary science. That will be me in the afterlife, if the relationships that individuate me in my pre-mortem state continue into my post-mortem existence. The reversal in being's unconcealment suggests that human death continues the cycle of personal existence.

The locus of tragedy /

: Ask for the tragic and Europe will answer. Leaving behind the philosophers' enthusiasm of the nineteenth century, 'tragedy' and 'the tragic' now seem little more than vague containers. However, it appears that we still discover a tragic essence in our personal lives. Time and again tragedy is being registered, written down and staged. This book wants to open a contemporary philosophical perspective on the tragic. What is the locus of tragedy? Does it relate to metaphysics, the gods, destiny, and chance? Or is it a matter of ethics, of the Law and its transgression? Does man himself occupy the locus of tragedy, because of his unreasonable and boundless desires, as many philosophers have suggested? Is man today still able to account for his tragic condition? Or do we locate the tragic first and foremost in the esthetic imagination? Is not the theatrical genre of tragedy the locus authenticus of all things tragic? Is there more to the tragic than drama and play?

Understanding the Incarnation : 'A Candle of Understanding' /

: Human beings have always struggled to find their place in the universe and sought understanding and contact with the divine. In contrast to the many failures and dead-ends the historically rooted but timeless Christian message looks radically different. Precisely the reverse dynamic has created the way: In the Incarnation the divine has come to humanity, making a bridge through the life and redeeming death of Jesus. As the author shows, the multiple witnesses of the New Testament and generations of Christian writers have grasped this and expounded it in their different ways. The philosophers and the scientists down to the present day have sought and are seeking a Theory of Everything. In the light of the candle of understanding, it is there to be discovered by all in the Incarnation. Suddenly, Christmas, Easter, and much besides, make sense.

Plato and Xenophon : comparative studies /

: Plato and Xenophon are the two students of Socrates whose works have come down to us in their entirety. Their works have been studied by countless scholars over the generations; but rarely have they been brought into direct contact, outside of their use in relation to the Socratic problem. This volume changes that, by offering a collection of articles containing comparative analyses of almost the entire range of Plato's and Xenophon's writings, approaching them from literary, philosophical and historical perspectives.

After 'Rwanda' : In Search of a New Ethics /

: Is writing about peace after the Rwandan Genocide self-defeating? Whether it is the intensity of the massacres, the popularity of the genocide, or the imaginary forms of cruelty, however one looks at it, everything in the Rwandan Genocide appears to defy once again the possibility of thinking peace anew. In order to address this problem, this book investigates the work of specific French and Rwandese philosophers in order to renew our understanding of peace today. Through this path-breaking investigation, peace no longer stands for an ideal in the future, but becomes a structure of inter-subjectivity that guarantees that the violence of language always prevails over any other form of violence. This book is the very first monograph in philosophy related to the events of 1994 in Rwanda.
