Recent scholarship focused on the role of embodiment within cognition and communication reminds us that part of how we "know" is through our physical senses. We only know the softness of a kitten by touching its fur, or the tastiness of bread by eating. How might this influence our understanding of biblical texts, such as Jesus's claim, "I am the bread of life," and the invitation to eat? This study explores the I am sayings of John's Gospel, their sensory elements providing an imaginative entry into the narrative and contributing tangible value to the participatory theology of the Fourth Gospel.

Thus, the divine-human dialogue, which is interwoven within the text, provides a key to the understanding of the dialogue between the narrator and the reader. In this volume, after setting a background and a theoretical framework, an extensive exploration of dialogue at the exchange, episode, and narrative levels is offered. The connection of dialogue with other literary aspects such as monologues, signs, I AM sayings, and metaphors is also established. Thus, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of dialogue in John 1-12.

Sanctifying Texts, Transforming Rituals: Encounters in Liturgical Studies explores the dynamics of Christian ritual practices in their relation to a broader cultural framework. The nineteen essays, written in honour of the liturgist Gerard A.M. Rouwhorst (Tilburg University), study liturgical developments in times of transition, in which religious and cultural changes set the development of worship practices in motion. The chapters in the first part (Texts) concentrate on the close connection between narrative texts and liturgical practice. In part two (Rituals), the focus shifts to the significance of liturgy as it expresses itself in rituals, and to the understanding of ritual acting. This section includes a variety of ritual aspects of liturgy, including the performance of the sacraments and the persons involved, as well as the relation between the liturgical ritual and material objects, such as images and relics. Section three (Encounters) crosses the borders of the discipline of liturgical studies. This final section of the book studies (ritual) relations between Christians and non-Christians through history, and includes contributions that study the dialogues between different liturgical languages and media. Entrenched in the myth of being victim of the Nazi aggression, Austrian elites pursued a politics of memory that symbolically shook off any responsibility for the emergence, development and consequences of National Socialism. Authors of the vast majority of films produced early after 1945 were not interested in dealing with the recent Nazi past of their country. There were, however, exceptions. Through detailed analysis of the narratives, stylistic patterns and reception of films that were set during or immediately after World War II, this book explains how cinema corroborated Austrian national self-stereotypes, at the same time offering a critique of the Nazi regime.

Der Band ,,Bausteine zu einer Geschichte der Philosophie an der Universität Graz" enthält die Vorträge eines Symposiums, das aus Anlaß des 100-jährigen Bestandsjubiläums des Grazer Philosophischen Institutes im Herbst 1997 veranstaltet wurde. Außerdem finden sich darin Aufsätze und Studien veröffentlicht, die aus einem Projekt der Forschungsstelle für österreichische Philosophie hervorgegangen sind, welches einer eingehenderen Untersuchung der Geschichte der Philosophie an der Grazer Universität mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der Jesuiten- und Lyzeumszeit gewidmet war; zur Vervollständigung des Gesamtbildes werden schließlich noch weitere, eigens für diesen Sammelband verfaßte Arbeiten über Grazer Philosophen präsentiert. Der frühen historischen Phase sind die ersten drei Beiträge des Bandes gewidmet, wobei in der ausführlichen Studie ,,Zur frühen Philosophielehre an der Grazer Jesuitenuniversität" erstmals der Versuch unternommen wird, die Inhalte des philosophischen Unterrichts, wie er am Anfang des 17. Many of these dialects, however, are now endangered due to political events in the Middle East over the last hundred years. This work, in three volumes, presents a description of one such endangered neo-Aramaic dialect, that of the Assyrian Christian community of the Barwar region in northern Iraq. It is a unique record of the dialect based on interviews with the surviving older generation of the community. Volume one contains a detailed grammatical description of the dialect, including sections on phonology, morphology and syntax. Volume two contains an extensive glossary of the lexicon of the dialect with illustrations of various aspects of the material culture. Volume three contains transcriptions of numerous recorded texts, including folktales, ethnographic texts, songs, and proverbs.
