The search for a theory of cognition : early mechanisms and new ideas /

The book brings into relief the variety of approaches and disciplines that have informed the quest for a theory of cognition. The center of interest are the historical, geographical, and theoretical peripheries of classic AI's mainstream research program. The twelve chapters bring back into focus the variety of strategies and theoretical questions that researchers explored while working toward a scientific theory of cognition and pre-cognition. The volume is organized in four parts, each one including three essays. The first one deals with cybernetics, the approach that may be considered as the most important periphery of classic AI research. The second part focuses on the geographical periphery of AI research. It examines how the theories and techniques developed on AI's home ground were translated into countries with different cultures and traditions: Italy, France, and the Soviet Union. The third part focuses on AI's periphery understood in the cultural and historical meaning of the term. It contains essays that locate some of the central concepts of AI, like representation and computability, within a broader philosophical (Descartes, Aristotle, Leibniz) and technical background (programming theory and practice). The fourth and final part of the volume is focused directly on the limitation of Turing's classic computability theory and its possible alternatives, some of which were studied in the early years of AI's research (e.g. Ashby's re-entrant information model), while others have been intensely studied in recent times (quantum automata).

A class of child artists in Mexico, a ship full of child refugees from Spain, classrooms of child pageant actors, and a pair of boy ambassadors revealed facets of hemispheric politics in the Good Neighbor era. Culture-makers in the Americas tuned into to children as producers of cultural capital to advance their transnational projects. In many instances, prevailing conceptions of children as innocent, primitive, dependent, and underdeveloped informed perceptions of Latin America as an infantilized region, a lesser "Other Americas" on the continent. In other cases, children's interventions in the cultural politics, economic projects, and diplomatic endeavors of the interwar period revealed that Latin American children saw themselves as modern, professional, participants in forging inter-American relationships.

It is the sad duty of the American Research Center to record the loss by death of one of its Founders. In June 1965, Mrs. Joseph Lindon Smith, '’Aunt Corinna” to a host of her younger friends, died in her 90th year at her home in Dublin, New Hampshire.
She had, together with her late husband, spent much time in Egypt ever since the early years of this century, had been a keen observer, on the spot, of many of the exciting finds of the period by archaeologists, and had developed a deep interest in ancient and present-day Egypt. The writer first knew her during the Smith's frequent sojourns at the camps of the Harvard-Boston Expedition, where they were the guests of its Director, George Reisner, while "Uncle Joe” was engaged in his outstanding work as a painter of archaeological subjects. Corinna Smith, being endowed with a brilliant and wide-ranging mind, boundless energy, and great enthusiasm, took a deep interest in the archaeological work in which her husband was so intimately involved. Her interest, however, was all-inclusive; she studied Arabic, the Koran, and the Mohamedan religion, and occupied herself with contemporary Egypt and its many problems. It is fair to say that during these years in Egypt there were few figures of importance, especially in the archaeological world, whom she did not know, whether they were Egyptian, European or American.

From the early phases of modern missions, Christian missionaries supported many humanitarian activities, mostly framed as subservient to the preaching of Christianity.
