Islam in Spain has been transformed from a historical to a social matter in recent decades, attracting the attention of experts from a variety of disciplines. However, contributions to the field have been somewhat disperse. The multidisciplinary nature of the research done -mainly by specialists in Islamic Studies, Anthropology, Sociology and Law- has not been conducive to debates between specialists or to the publication of comprehensive works that recognize the wealth of views and findings. Observing Islam in Spain contains the keys to understanding current debates about the presence of Muslim citizens in Spain with regard to symbolism and public space, the law, ritual, the question of re-Islamization and the association-building and political participation of young people and women. This work presents a set of protocols to establish the need for wood samples from shipwrecks and to guide archaeologists in the removal of samples for a suite of archaeometric techniques currently available to provenance the timbers used to construct wooden ships and boats. Case studies presented use Iberian ships of the 16th to 18th centuries.

Shaping Canon Law in an Age of Reform : Petrus Peckius on Church Reparation and Clerical Discipline /

This book examines the contributions of Petrus Peckius (1529-1589), a law professor at the University of Leuven, focusing on how he shaped canon law amid the rise of Protestantism, ongoing wars, and the demands of Catholic Reform, particularly the Council of Trent (1545-1563). This research shows that while Peckius largely adhered to established canons and jurisprudence within its commune, he also engaged with reform, introduced methodological innovations, and adapted to contemporary challenges. Based on Peckius' published works and lecture notes taken by a student in Leuven (1575-1577), we provide insight into his role as both jurist and educator. The emphasis lies on two key issues explored by Peckius: (1) the reparation of churches damaged during the Iconoclastic Fury and (2) the regulation of clerical conduct.

This book studies the legal reasoning of Mālik ibn Anas (d. 179 H./795 C.E.) in the Muwaṭṭa' and Mudawwana . Although focusing on Mālik, the book presents a broad comparative study of legal reasoning in the first three centuries of Islam. It reexamines the role of considered opinion ( ra'y ), dissent, and legal ḥadīths and challenges the paradigm that Muslim jurists ultimately concurred on a "four-source" (Qurʾān, sunna , consensus, and analogy) theory of law. Instead, Mālik and Medina emphasizes that the four Sunnī schools of law ( madhāhib ) emerged during the formative period as distinctive, consistent, yet largely unspoken legal methodologies and persistently maintained their independence and continuity over the next millennium.
