Die Dramatische Zeit in Senecas Tragodien /
:
In four separate studies, Andreas Heil shows that Seneca, in his tragedies Thyestes , Hercules furens , Troas ( Troades ) and Medea , handles dramatic time less experimentally than has been assumed before. In all of these plays, taking into consideration the accompanying action on the stage and the characters' respective points of view, a gradually developing plot can be reconstructed. Thus, the survey considerably deepens our understanding of Seneca's dramatic technique.

Rivers in prehistory : edited by Andrea Vianello.
:
From antiquity onwards people have opted to live near rivers and major watercourses. Both freshwater and navigable routes provide the obvious reasons for settling near a river, but there are also many drawbacks, such as flooding. This volume explores rivers as facilitators of movement through landscapes, and it investigates the reasons for living near a river, as well as the role of the river in the human landscape. Ultimately, it focuses on the delicate relationship between humans and their environment, looking at the origins to help understand the present.

Ancient Egyptian biographies : contexts, forms, functions /
:
"(Auto-)biography is a genre of ancient Egyptian written discourse that was central to high culture from its earliest periods. Belonging to the nonroyal elites, these texts present aspects of individual lives and experience, sometimes as narratives of key events, sometimes as characterizations of personal qualities. Egyptian (auto-) biographies offer a unique opportunity to examine the ways in which individuals fashioned distinctive selves for display and the significance of the physical, religious, and social contexts they selected. 0The present volume brings together specialists from a range of relevant periods, approaches, and interests. The studies collected here examine Egyptian (auto-)biographies from a variety of complementary perspectives: (1) anthropological and contrastive perspectives; (2) the original Old Kingdom settings; (3) text format and language; (4) social dimensions; and (5) religious experience"--

The Russian-Orthodox Tradition and Modernity /
:
The book attempts to identify the uniqueness of the Russian-Orthodox religious tradition and to contrast it with two of the characteristics of modern Western society: its particular economic ethics and individualism. Max Weber and Louis Dumont provide the theoretical framework. The first part of the analysis is concerned with the economic ethics among Orthodox Russians, Old Believers and the adherents of various sects in the historical context of Russian society. The second part centres on the place and the kind of individualism in the Orthodox tradition since its beginnings in early monasticism and up to the twentieth century. The comparative perspective does not only shed new light on Russia but also on the development of Western individualism and on the Janus-like features of a traditional culture exposed to modernization.

Heavenly tablets : interpretation, identity and tradition in ancient Judaism /
:
This volume brings together a wide range of international scholars of Ancient Judaism, in celebration of the career of Betsy Halpern-Amaru. The essays in the first section, Interpreting Ritual Texts, examine Jewish ritual praxis in late antiquity, highlighting the ways in which text and ritual intersect in the process of interpretation. Mapping Diaspora Identities asks how Diaspora communities came to understand the Bible's preoccupation with land, and how land was used to figure ancient authors' depictions of "center" and "margin" in drawing the boundaries of Jewish communities, and of Jewish identity. Finally, Rewriting Tradition explores rewriting of biblical stories in Hellenistic and later Jewish sources, and the ways that authors work through the tradition to reflect their current realities and their hopes for the future.

Breaking Boundaries in Theology : In Conversation with Roger Haight SJ /
:
American Jesuit Roger Haight (born 1936) undoubtedly belongs to the circle of Catholic theologians who have set standards across denominational boundaries, particularly in the English-speaking world. Haight's writings have attracted both attention and criticism. The anthology will be the first comprehensive and international examination of central aspects of Haight's theology. A detailed introduction, which primarily aims to situate Haight's theology in his social and cultural context, is followed by three sections that present central aspects of his theology and conversationally develop them. The first section, Finding God within the World, has the clearest fundamental theological contours, echoing Ignatian themes. The following sections focus on Spirituality and on Haight's Christology in connection with his liberation theological concerns. The book includes also an online conversation with Roger Haight. "Like the music of Mozart and Beethoven which he loved, Roger Haight's theology flowed in creative ways while building upon a deep structure. Never without his playlists, earbuds, or tickets to the NY Philharmonic, he radiated curiosity and a centered peace." - Elizabeth Johnson, Distinguished Professor Emerita of Theology, Fordham University, New York City "Roger Haight's theology was simply a reflection of who he was: such a keen mind, so good-humored, ready always to advise 'onward and upward,' and yes, above all, kind." - Leo J. O'Donovan, SJ, President Emeritus, Georgetown University, Washington D.C. "As a teacher, theologian, priest, mentor, and friend, Roger Haight was without peer. His openness, generosity, and incisive clarity - paired with a ready and wry sense of humor - were wellsprings of inspiration and joy for those who studied and worked with him. This book is a wonderful testament to the theology of conversation of Roger Haight." - Lisa Holsberg, Adjunct Professor, Fordham University, New York City

Constructing tradition means and myths of transmission in Western esotericism /
:
The question of constructing tradition, concepts of origin, and memory as well as techniques and practices of knowledge transmission, are central for cultures in general. In esotericism, however, such questions and techniques play an outstanding role and are widely reflected upon, in its literature. Esoteric paradigms not only understand themselves in elaborated mytho-poetical narratives as bearers of "older", "hidden", "higher" knowledge. They also claim their knowledge to be of a particular origin. And they claim this knowledge has been transmitted by particular (esoteric) means, media and groups. Consequently, esotericism not only involves the construction of its own tradition; it can even be understood as a specific form of tradition and transmission. The various studies of the present voume, which contains the papers of a conference held in Tübingen in July 2007, provide an overview of the most important concepts and ways of constructing tradition in esotericism.

Brill's Companion to the Reception of Ancient Rhetoric /
:
This volume, examining the reception of ancient rhetoric, aims to demonstrate that the past is always part of the present: in the ways in which decisions about crucial political, social and economic matters have been made historically; or in organic interaction with literature, philosophy and culture at the core of the foundation principles of Western thought and values. Analysis is meant to cover the broadest possible spectrum of considerations that focus on the totality of rhetorical species (i.e. forensic, deliberative and epideictic) as they are applied to diversified topics (including, but not limited to, language, science, religion, literature, theatre and other cultural processes (e.g. athletics), politics and leadership, pedagogy and gender studies) and cross-cultural, geographical and temporal contexts.

Politics of worship in the contemporary Middle East : sainthood in fragile states /
:
In Sainthood in Fragile States , a wide range of social scientists explore the contested role of sainthood in the contemporary Middle East. By expanding the notion of sainthood to cover both the religious and secular ways of dealing with extraordinary events, people and things, the volume offers new insights into the way sainthood is embedded in various levels of everyday life, as well as national and international politics. The case studies highlight how fragility as a central aspect of sainthood is a productive force that often consolidates tales of the extraordinary, and is also the source of contesting social identities. Contributors include: Andreas Bandak, Mikkel Bille, Jürgen Frembgen, Sune Haugbolle, Angie Heo, Daniella Kuzmanovic, Edith Szanto, and Pnina Werbner.
