For the first time, the dramatic changes the Qur'anic code underwent during the Umayyad period (660-750 C.E.) are analysed and presented on the basis of a selection of material in good part unpublished. In Qur'ans of the Umayyads , François Déroche offers a chronology of the various developments which marked the period, in an approach combining philology, art history, codicology and palaeography. The conclusions he reaches challenge the traditional account about the writing down of the Qur'an and throw a new light on the role of the Umayyads in its handwritten diffusion. Winner of 23rd I.R. Iran World Award for the Book of the Year 2016!

A Traditional Mu'tazilite Qur'ān Commentary : The Kashshāf of Jār Allāh al-Zamakhsharī (d.538/1144) /

This book deals with the life and work of Jār Allāh al-Zamakhsharī (d. 538/144). The greater part of it, however, is devoted to an examination of his Qurʾān commentary, al-Kashshāf. The book is divided into five chapters, supplemented by nine appendices. After a chapter on the author's life and writings (an annotated list of which is given in an appendix), there follow four chapters that focus on the Kashshāf itself. These deal with the history of the text, its structure and method, the traditions it contains and the sources the author relied on for it. Although both al-Zamakhsharī's name and the title of his commentary are well known, very little is actually known about either the author or the work. This book presents a more complete and nuanced picture of each.

Chesworth then introduces the range of tracts currently available, examining eight in detail. In particular he considers how they present scripture in order to promote their own faith, Islam or Christianity, whilst denigrating the 'other'. Finally, the volume discusses the impact from modern media on these tracts.

This volume gathers the proceedings of the Paris conference in Philonic studies (2017), consisting of 23 papers by contributors from 8 countries. Fifty years after the Lyon conference, it aimed at taking a retrospective look at the intellectual contexts and the academic fields in which Philonic studies have penetrated, as well as the ways in which they evolved. The work of the Alexandrian became of major importance in the history of philosophy. Kitāb al-abniya ʿan ḥaqāʾiq al-adwiya : Rawḍat al-uns wa-manfaʿat al-nafs /

This is a facsimile edition of the oldest dated manuscript in Persian, a pharmacological handbook by Abū Mansūr Hirawī. It was written between 430/1038 and 445/1054 for the local ruler of Ṭāram in the province of Zanjān in north-western Iran, Abū Naṣr Jastān. The present copy was executed in 447/1055 by the poet Asadī Ṭūsī, author of the epic poem Garshāsp-nāma and the oldest Persian dictionary based on samples from poetry, the Lughat-i Furs . Written in a beautiful Khurāsānī Kufic hand, it contains the descriptions and medical properties of 584 simple substances, derived from minerals, animals and plants. Organized on the basis of the Arabic alphabet, it cites besides the Arabic names also many synonyms in Greek, Syrian, Persian, and what is said to be Indian terminology, with several Indian authors referred to by name. Its technical prose combined with local terminology make it a primary source on the history of medicine in Persia.

Al-Maqrīzī's al-Ḫabar ʻan al-bašar

Al-Maqrīzī's (d. 845/1442) last work, al-Ḫabar ʿan al-bašar , was completed a year before his death. This volume, edited by Jaakko Hämeen-Anttila, covers the history of pre-Islamic Iran from the Creation to the Parthians. Al-Maqrīzī's work shows how Arab historians integrated Iran into world history and how they harmonized various currents of historiography (Middle Persian historiography, Islamic sacred history, Greek and Latin historiography). Among al-Ḫabar' s sources is Kitāb Hurūšiyūš , the Arabic translation of Paulus Orosius' Historiarum adversum paganos libri vii. This source has only been preserved in one defective copy, and al-Maqrīzī's text helps to fill in some of its lacunae.

A Late Mamluk Medical Regimen for Travellers : Ibn al-Amshāṭī's al-Isfār ʿan ḥikam al-asfār Critical Edition, Translation, and Commentary /

The fifteenth-century travel regimen entitled al-Isfār ʿan ḥikam al-asfār ('The unveiling of the wisdoms of the books') written by the Cairene jurist-physician Ibn al-Amshāṭī (d. 1496) is an interesting example of the postclassical medical literature. It includes, besides a travel regimen (written likely as a health guide for the pilgrimage to Mecca), a short pharmacopoeia of single and compound remedies deemed useful for the traveller. The work was composed for Kamāl al-Dīn al-Bārizī (d. 1452), the head of the Mamluk Chancery. The Arabic edition, English translation, and commentary of this text are framed by a detailed introductory study of the Arabic-language tradition of travel regimens and various medico-pharmacological glossaries.
