Dialect atlas of north Yemen and adjacent areas /

: Since the author's publication of Die nordjemenitischen Dialekte. Teil 1: Atlas in 1985, a lot of new field work has been done in North Yemen and adjacent areas with new data especially from the extreme north of Yemen and neighbouring areas in Saudi Arabia. These are considered to be the most archaic Arabic dialect areas. The publication of a new atlas of the region in English therefore suggested itself. The atlas consists of 192 fully coloured maps with 30 phonetical and phonological maps, 100 morphological and 60 lexical ones. Depending on the subject the maps are accompanied by shorter or longer commentaries and paradigms. The book is of interest to Arabists, Semitists and dialectologists.

The theatre of justice : aspects of performance in Greco-Roman oratory and rhetoric /

: The Theatre of Justice contains 17 chapters that offer a holistic view of performance in Greek and Roman oratorical and political contexts. This holistic view consists of the examination of two areas of techniques. The first one relates to the delivery of speeches and texts: gesticulation, facial expressions and vocal communication. The second area includes a wide diversity of techniques that aim at forging a rapport between the speaker and the audience, such as emotions, language and style, vivid imagery and the depiction of characters. In this way the volume develops a better understanding of the objectives of public speaking, the mechanisms of persuasion, and the extent to which performance determined the outcome of judicial and political contests.

Illuminationist texts and textual studies : essays in memory of Hossein Ziai /

: The late Professor Hossein Ziai's interests focused on the Illuminationist ( Ishrāqī ) tradition. Dedicated to his memory, this volume deals with the post-Avicennan philosophical tradition in Iran, and in particular the Illuminationist school and later philosophers, such as those associated with the School of Isfahan, who were fundamentally influenced by it. The focus of various chapters is on translations, editions, and close expositions of rationalist works in areas such as epistemology, logic and metaphysics rather than mysticism more generally, and also on specific texts rather than themes or studies of individual philosophers. The purpose of the volume is to introduce new texts into the modern canon of Islamic and Iranian philosophy. Various texts in this volume have not been previously translated nor have they been the subject of significant Western scholarship.

Paul Mattick: Selected Texts /

: These essays by Paul Mattick were written during periods of radical activity and address themes still critical for us today-the devastation of war-torn areas and the abject destitution to which beleaguered populations are subjected, the authoritarian character of ostensibly democratic regimes, the ecological disasters that increasingly beset the world, the rationale behind and limits to governmental efforts to stimulate and stabilize the economy, and Mattick's assessment of economic theorizing within the marxian tradition. The essays combine contemporary commentary with theoretical analysis and represent some of the finest work Mattick produced. See Less

Arbitral Awards of the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration - Arbitral Awards of CRCICA Volume 2 (1997-2000) /

: The cases are edited and translated by the prominent legal scholar, arbitrator and lawyer Dr. Mohie Eldin I. Alam-Eldin. His in-depth commentary on the thirty-four cases included in this volume encompasses discussion of emerging new arbitral trends and principles, such as the alter ego and contra preferentum doctrines, and new approaches to arbitration engendered by the ever-growing and changing practises and patterns of internatuional trade. He also analyses many of the new issues raised by the decisions of the court of appeal in cases where arbitral awards proved unsatisfactory. Many of these court of appeal decisions are included in the text, as are relevant decisions of the Supreme Court of Egypt. This second series of cases brought before the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration covers the period 1997-2002, years which witnessed a major growth in confidence in the Centre and a corresponding expansion in scope, procedure, and legal principles. Perhaps most notable among these important developments is the evolution of hybrid procedures that permit the harmonization of legal cultures among parties. In this book will be found a number of cases which successfully blend common law, civil law, and Sharia principles while rigorously adhering to the agreements between the parties, all applicable law, and guarantees of defence. The subject matter of the international disputes arbitrated includes the following: - Supply - Hotel management - Software contracts - Oil contracts - Distributorship contracts - Insurance contracts - Credit risk management contracts - Construction - Commercial agency The significance of the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration, as a forward-looking and innovative institution directly influencing business activity in some of the most important areas of global commerce, can hardly be overstated. This book validates and reinforces the Centre pivotal role, and will be of inestimable value to the international commercial arbitration community.

Beyond the Code : Muslim Family Law and the Shari'a Judiciary in the Palestinian West Bank /

: Legal issues of personal status - including those implicating women's rights - continue to be a focal area of shari'a judicial practice in the Muslim world. Changing ideas of marriage, relations between the spouses, divorce, and the rights of divorcees and widows challenge the courts around the Arab world. In this context, the areas that came under the Palestinian Authority in 1994 command particular attention: the particular political and socio-economic circumstances that surround Palestine's progress toward full statehood have created a remarkable crucible for the synthesis of a new family law in the Arab world. This rigorous study of the interpretation and application of personal status law in the Palestinian West Bank (and to a lesser extent in the Gaza Strip) is the most extensive yet attempted. It presents a systematic analysis of the application of Islamic family law in nearly 10,000 marriage contracts, 1000 deeds of talaq (unilateral divorce) or khul' (divorce with renunciation), and 2000 judicial rulings over a time span that includes Jordanian rule and Israeli military occupation, updating this with material from the beginning of the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority. Taken into account are the sources of law used in the shari'a courts of the West Bank: the successive codes of family law (the Jordanian Law of Personal Status 1976 and its predecessor the Jordanian Law of Family Rights 1951), and traditional Hanafi rules and texts, along with commentaries by prominent contemporary shari'a scholars and Appeal Court decisions - as well as the amendments and modifications being sought by civil society actors (notably women's groups) in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as in Jordan.

Hakol Kol Yaakov : The Joel Roth Jubilee Volume /

: Hakol Kol Yaakov: The Joel Roth Jubilee Volume contains twenty articles dedicated to Rabbi Joel Roth, written by colleagues and students. In his career, Joel Roth has been known as a scholar and teacher of Talmud par excellence, and, without question, as the preeminent decisor of Jewish law for the Conservative movement of his generation. In the meticulous style and approach of the Talmud scholarship of his generation, Roth painstakingly and precisely assayed the vast array of rabbinic legal sources, and proceeded to apply these in pedagogy, in scholarship and particularly in the production of contemporary legal responsa. The articles in this volume reflect the unique and integrated voice and vision that Joel Roth has brought to the American Jewish community.

A Companion to Comparative Theology /

: A Companion to Comparative Theology offers a unique survey of a rapidly developing field of modern theology in 32 chapters coordinated by five editors. Its first part discusses some of the main historical developments in theology and religious studies before 1985 that are relevant for understanding contemporary approaches in comparative theology. The main part of the companion traces developments in five specific areas of comparative research, starting with classical approaches by Christian comparative theologians, and continuing with responses by scholars from Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist and Chinese religious comparative perspectives. The final part of the companion highlights a number of new avenues in comparative theology, discussing new methods, new forms of awareness, new partnerships with other fields of study, and finally some preliminary conclusions.

This work presents a linguistic atlas of Zazaki, a northwestern Iranian language. It documents the linguistic geography of a region that has so far been little studied. The research is based on original fieldwork conducted with a questionnaire in 65 locations across the entire area. This questionnaire is oriented towards the predominantly rural conditions of a culture that is on the verge of disappearing. Zazaki is comprehensively documented following the model of linguistic atlases of European languages and is presented in 280 maps, which summarize 850 individual maps. The work is divided into two parts: a theoretical section with an introduction and map commentaries, and a map section. The first two volumes provide insight into the material. This is the first systematic foundational research on the linguistic geography of Zazaki. The study sets new standards in Iranian studies. The first two volumes focus on phonology. Six additional volumes will follow.

The Monumental Inscriptions from Early Islamic Iran and Transoxiana /

: Inscriptions on buildings are a distinctive feature of Islamic architecture, and this book studies the 79 surviving monumental inscriptions in the Iranian world from the first five centuries of the Muslim era (A.D. 622-1106), the period in which all the major trends of monumental epigraphy in the area were set. These foundation, commemorative, and funerary texts come from the region between Iraq and Soviet Central Asia. Written primarily in Arabic, they embellished architectural monuments and furnishings whose nature implies the construction of major buildings. An extended introduction discusses such general topics as titulature, patronage, and stylistic development. Each text is then presented individually with photographs, drawings, transcriptions, translations and an extensive commentary, which presents the inscription in its larger palaeographic and historical contexts.
