The studies of the Isiac Cults are forty years old. Many of the scholars who have contributed to the development of this particular field of research, - the diffusion of the Egyptian cults in the Graeco-Roman world -, met in the Futuroscope of Poitiers for a three-day colloquium, to establish the progress of research, and the subjects which need more discussion. The synthesis of this colloquium is presented in this volume. The best specialists in the world give their assessment of the past forty years of research: which tools do students and scholars have? Dans L'art de la guerre chez les Mamelouks , Mehdi Berriah fait la lumière sur les mécanismes autour desquels s'articulaient la conduite et la pratique de la guerre de l'armée mamelouke. Les Mamelouks en firent l'une des plus performantes du Proche-Orient médiéval aux XIIIe-XIVe siècles, ce qui leur a permis de repousser le triple danger (Mongols, Francs et Arméniens) qui menaçait les territoires du dār al-Islām au Proche-Orient. D'origine servile, provenant majoritairement des steppes eurasiatiques et du Caucase, les Mamelouks étaient recrutés avant tout pour la guerre. Celle-ci fut leur raison d'être, leur légitimité politico-religieuse provenant exclusivement de leurs exploits militaires. À partir d'un large corpus mêlant chroniques (arabes, latines, arméniennes et persanes), sources didactiques et travaux archéologiques, Mehdi Berriah offre le premier livre expliquant, avec détail, les succès militaires des Mamelouks bahrites sur différents fronts face à leurs trois principaux ennemis, et leur quasi-invincibilité sur terre, lesquels in fine permirent au sultanat de s'imposer comme la première puissance dans la région à la fin du VIIIe/XIVe siècle.

"Lorsque le Directoire décide d'envoyer le général Bonaparte, auréolé de la gloire toute fraîche de la campagne d'Italie, conquérir l'Égypte, ce n'est pas sans arrière-pensée. Vainqueur, il devient plus que jamais le bras armé de la France; vaincu, il est moins dangereux politiquement. Ce calcul, qui se veut doublement gagnant s'avère perdant sur toute la ligne. On ne retient que la bataille des pyramides du haut desquelles "quarante siècles" étaient censés contempler une armée qui ne pouvait pas les voir depuis le champ de bataille et la redécouverte d'un Orient lointain et mystérieux qui n'est pas sans laisser, consciemment ou non, un léger arrière-goût de croisade. Il entreprend un travail de fonds, de façon à doter le pays de structures juridiques, administratives, mais aussi scientifiques directement inspirées du modèle français. Le 26 août 1798, un Institut d'Égypte est créé sur le modèle de l'Institut de France. En quatre sections, l'Institut d'Égypte réunissait les plus brillants membres de la Commission des Sciences et des Arts, les cent cinquante-six savants que le général avait joints à l'expédition, une petite troupe inapte au combat mais aussi précieuse que les ânes, du moins si l'on en croit la légende de la bataille des pyramides! The Letter before the Spirit contains original articles based on the papers given at the Huygens ING (The Hague, 2009) on the importance of text editions for the study of the transmission of Aristotle's works in the Semitico-Latin translations and their commentary tradition in the medieval world. Authors underline this importance in general overviews and theoretical outlines and present their own work on various text editions, ranging from Syriac and Arabic to Hebrew and (Graeco) Latin, and from Aristotle, Avicenna and Averroes to Plotinus, Michael Scot, William of Moerbeke, Judah ha-Kohen, Barhebraeus and Albertus Magnus. Ouvrage publié à l'occasion de l'exposition présentée à l'Institut du monde arabe, Paris, du 23 janvier au 4 mai 2014. Il y a tout juste quatre-vingts ans, à peine une vie d'homme, André Parrot mettait au jour en Syrie une petite statue avec une inscription sur l'épaule qui lui révélait le nom ancien de la ville, Mari, dont la fouille débutait. À regarder les photographies en noir et blanc prises alors, on peut aisément concevoir l'émotion qu'il en ressentit. Cependant, loin de la vision romantique de l'archéologue-héros développée depuis par un certain cinéma, les photographies des premières campagnes conduites sur le site montrent un quotidien différent, soucieux d'une vision à la fois large des vestiges dans leur environnement, grâce aux photos aériennes prises avec le concours de l'armée, et au plus près du sol d'où sont, patiemment, excavés les fondations de cet ensemble urbain ainsi qu'un abondant matériel, catalogué avec soin, soir après soir.
