War, warlords, and interstate relations in the ancient Mediterranean /

: During the final four centuries BC, many political and stateless entities of the Mediterranean headed towards anarchy and militarism, while stronger powers -Carthage, the Hellenistic kingdoms and Republican Rome- expanded towards State formation, forceful military structures and empire building. Edited by T. Ñaco del Hoyo and F. López Sánchez, this volume presents the proceedings from an ICREA Conference held in Barcelona (2013), addressing the connection between war, warlords and interstate relations from classical studies and social sciences perspectives. Some twenty scholars from European, Japanese and North American Universities consider the scope of 'multipolarity' and the usefulness of 'warlord', a modern category, in order to feature some ancient military and political leaderships.

Luwian identities : culture, language and religion between Anatolia and the Aegean.

: The Luwians inhabited Anatolia and Syria in late second through early first millennium BC. They are mainly known through their Indo-European language, preserved on cuneiform tablets and hieroglyphic stelae. However, where the Luwians lived or came from, how they coexisted with their Hittite and Greek neighbors, and the peculiarities of their religion and material culture, are all debatable matters. A conference convened in Reading in June 2011 in order to discuss the current state of the debate, summarize points of disagreement, and outline ways of addressing them in future research. The papers presented at this conference were collected in the present volume, whose goal is to bring into being a new interdisciplinary field, Luwian Studies. \'To conclude, the editors of this volume on Luwian identities and the authors of the individual papers are to be congratulatedwith a successful sequel to TheLuwians of 2003 edited by Melchert and with yet another substantial brick in the foundation of the incipient discipline of Luwian studies.\' Fred C. Contemporary International Law Issues: Opportunities at a Time of Momentous Change /

: Contemporary International Law Issues: Opportunities at a Time of Momentous Change is the record of the Second Joint Conference of The American Society of International Law and the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Internationaal Recht, which was held in The Hague, on July 22--24, 1993. At this event international scholars, practitioners and experts gathered to discuss the latest developments in such areas as trade and investment, the environment, human rights, law of the sea, settlement of disputes, international criminal law, NAFTA, the European Community, and commercial arbitration with particular reference to Central and Eastern Europe. The content of these Proceedings bears evidence of the wide range of dialogue that occurred during the Joint Conference and directs the reader to issues which might form suitable subjects for further research and elaboration in other scholarly work. The book will be of interest to academics and diplomats, as well as legal practitioners.

The Statute of the International Criminal Court: A Documentary History /

: The 1998 Statute of the International Criminal Court was the realization (albeit imperfect) of the oldest and longest-postponed item on the UN agenda, a judicial arm that could enforce the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Genocide Convention. For scholars studying this slow but crucial development in the international law of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, here is the essential documentary history: the draft statutes of 1951, 1953, 1981, and 1994, along with various related reports, the 1998 Statute, and commentary by Professor Bassiouni, who chaired the Drafting Committee of the 1998 Statute.
