A partir de l'affirmation, par la Cour internationale de Justice, que les droits de l'homme s'appliquent en période de conflits armés, l'ouvrage explore ce qu'implique cette irruption des droits de l'homme et de leurs mécanismes de surveillance dans un champ qui, pendant longtemps, a été considéré comme exclusivement ou principalement conduit par le droit des conflits armés. Au-delà de l'humanisation de ce dernier, l'approche des conflits en termes de droits subjectifs individuels ou collectifs, opposables aux Etats et justiciables, constitue un vecteur puissant de l'autonomisation et d'autodétermination de l'individu, même dans des contextes de violences généralisées. L'ouvrage vise aussi à présenter les insuffisances et limites du droit international des droits de l'homme pour appréhender les comportements des groupes non étatiques et des organisations internationales par exemple, ou bien encore la réparation intégrale des violations graves et massives. S'appuyant sur une analyse approfondie et comparée de la pratique judiciaire et quasi judiciaire internationale, le cours invite à réfléchir de manière critique au rôle potentiellement préventif, protecteur et transformateur du droit international des droits de l'homme face aux conflits armés.

The afterlife imagery in Luke's story of the rich man and Lazarus /

Despite the keen scholarly interest in the Gospel parables, the afterlife scenery in the story of the rich man and Lazarus has often been overlooked. Using insights from the orality studies and intertextuality, the author places the Lukan description of the fate of the dead into the larger Hellenistic matrix, provided by a large number of Greco-Roman and Jewish sources, both literary and epigraphic. Moreover, she challenges several conventional stances in Lukan studies, such as tracing the original of the story to Egypt, or maintaining that eschatology is a key for understanding Luke's work and the purpose for writing it, or harmonizing Luke's eschatological thinking by positing an intermediate state between death and general resurrection. Thus, the book offers fresh insights both to the way the fate of the dead was understood in the ancient world and to the concept of Lukan eschatology.

"Lorsque le Directoire décide d'envoyer le général Bonaparte, auréolé de la gloire toute fraîche de la campagne d'Italie, conquérir l'Égypte, ce n'est pas sans arrière-pensée. Vainqueur, il devient plus que jamais le bras armé de la France; vaincu, il est moins dangereux politiquement. Ce calcul, qui se veut doublement gagnant s'avère perdant sur toute la ligne. On ne retient que la bataille des pyramides du haut desquelles "quarante siècles" étaient censés contempler une armée qui ne pouvait pas les voir depuis le champ de bataille et la redécouverte d'un Orient lointain et mystérieux qui n'est pas sans laisser, consciemment ou non, un léger arrière-goût de croisade. Jews and Christians in the first and second centuries : how to write their history /

The papers in this volume are organized around the ambition to reboot the writing of history about Jews and Christians in the first two centuries CE. Many are convinced of the need for a new perspective on this crucial period that saw both the birth of rabbinic Judaism and apostolic Christianity and their parting of ways. Yet the traditional paradigm of Judaism and Christianity as being two totally different systems of life and thought still predominates in thought, handbooks, and programs of research and teaching. As a result, the sources are still being read as reflecting two separate histories, one Jewish and the other Christian. The contributors to the present work were invited to attempt to approach the ancient Jewish and Christian sources as belonging to one single history, precisely in order to get a better view of the process that separated both communities. In doing so, it is necessary to pay constant attention to the common factor affecting both communities: the Roman Empire. Roman history and Roman archaeology should provide the basis on which to study and write the shared history of Jews and Christians and the process of their separation. A basic intuition is that the series of wars between Jews and Romans between 66 and 135 CE - a phenomenon unrivalled in antiquity - must have played a major role in this process. Thus the papers are arranged around three focal points: (1) the varieties of Jewish and Christian expression in late Second Temple times, (2) the socio-economic, military, and ideological processes during the period of the revolts, and (3) the post-revolt Jewish and Christian identities that emerged. As such, the volume is part of a larger project that is to result in a source book and a history of Jews and Christians in the first and second centuries.

For the majority of scholars, the Animal Apocalypse is a militant text, a piece of pro-Maccabean propaganda. This text, however, develops theological reflections that are distinctly different from a justification of an armed struggle. Its themes are even incompatible with the Maccabean movement. It is impossible to condemn the Second Temple and, at the same time, mobilise people for a fight in order to purify that very Temple. After dealing with text-critical issues, this work challenges the thesis that the text is military propaganda through the use of narrative and historical approaches. The analyses, besides proposing a new way of a studying an apocalypse, spell out the peculiarity and the significance of the theology of the Animal Apocalypse in connection with the biblical history of Israel and the theology of the Qumran community.
