Scholar, Serpent, Yogin, and Devotee: The Many Faces of Patañjali in Indian Traditions /
:
This study illuminates the many faces of Patañjali in Indian traditions. Often regarded as an incarnation of the cosmic serpent Ādiśeṣa or Anantanāga, Patañjali is celebrated, in both story and art, as a grammarian, scholar and practitioner of yoga, physician-alchemist, medical authority, teacher, ascetic, and devotee of the Dancing Śiva (Naṭarāja). The first three chapters examine the literary works attributed to Patañjali, explore legendary accounts and beliefs associated with this multifaceted figure, and survey temples and shrines dedicated to the sage. The following five chapters trace the development of Patañjali's iconography from its earliest forms in Tamilnadu, South India, to contemporary examples.

Institutional Violence /
:
Violence can be physical and psychological. It can characterize personal actions, forms of group activity, and abiding social and political policy. This book includes all of these aspects within its focus on institutional forms of violence. Institution is also a broad category, ranging from formal arrangements such as the military, the criminal code, the death penalty and prison system, to more amorphous but systemic situations indicated by parenting, poverty, sexism, work, and racism. Violence is as complex as the human beings who resort to it; its institutional forms pervade our relational lives. We are all participants in it as victims and perpetrators. The chapters in this book were written in the hope that violence can be explicated, even if not fully understood, and that such clarification can help us in devising less violent forms of living, even if it does not lead to its total abolition. The studies bring new aspects of violence to light and offer a number of suggestions for its remedy.

Islamic jurisprudence on the regulation of armed conflict : text and context /
:
In Islamic Jurisprudence on the Regulation of Armed Conflict: Text and Context, Nesrine Badawi argues against the existence of a "true" interpretation of the rules regulating armed conflict in Islamic law. In a survey of formative and modern seminal legal works on the subject, the author sheds light on the role played by the sociopolitical context in shaping this branch of jurisprudence and offers a detailed examination of the internal deductive structures of these works.

The Revolutionary Organisation : Armed Struggle from the Late 18th Century to the Present /
:
This is the first comprehensive study of the phenomenon of the armed-struggle revolutionary organisation. The Revolutionary Organisation covers the period from the late 18th century to the present, is global in scope, and discusses organisations inspired by all main ideological traditions: communist, anti-colonialist, nationalist, democratic, Islamist, fascist, and white supremacist. The condition of life-and-death struggle with the state imposes similar patterns of operation upon these organisations, irrespective of their ideological inclinations. This work interprets armed-struggle revolutionary organisations as hybrids of three orientations: an apparatus of professional revolutionaries; an emotional community sustained by ideology, battle comradeship, and ritual; and an instrument of physical force nurturing an heroic organisational ethos.

Islamic arms and armor in the Metropolitan Museum of Art /
:
"From its origins in the 7th century, armor and weaponry were central to Islamic culture not only as a means of conquest and the spread of faith, but also as symbols of status, wealth, and power. More than 120 exceptional examples from the renowned collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art are presented in detail to demonstrate the remarkable craftsmanship and beauty of Islamic arms and armor. These diverse objects, which have never been catalogued or published in detail, span ten centuries and represent nearly every Islamic culture, from Spain to the Caucasus. Among these masterpieces are rare early works, such as the oldest documented Islamic sword, and fine examples of decorated helmets and body armor from late-15th-century Iran and Anatolia. Also included are lavish gem-studded weapons from royal courts in the Ottoman world and India. Each piece is handsomely photographed, with a detailed discussion of its technical, historical, and artistic importance. Made by master artisans in conjunction with leading designers, goldsmiths, and jewelers, these stunning objects demonstrate how utilitarian military equipment could be transformed into striking and extravagant works of art."--YaleBooks website.
"Armor and weaponry were central to Islamic culture not only as a means of conquest and the spread of the faith, but also as symbols of status, wealth, and power. The finest arms were made by master craftsmen working with the leading designers, goldsmiths, and jewelers, whose work transformed utilitarian military equipment into courtly works of art. This book reveals the diversity and artistic quality of one of the most important and encyclopedic collections of its kind in the West. The Metropolitan Museum's holdings span ten centuries and include representative pieces from almost every Islamic culture from Spain to the Caucasus. Presenting 126 objects, each handsomely photographed and richly documented with a detailed description of discussion of its technical, historical, and artistic importance, this overview of the Met's holdings is supplemented by an introductory essay on the formation of the collection, and appendixes on iconography and on Turkman-style armor."--Publisher's description.

International Dimensions of Humanitarian Law /
:
Commissioned by UNESCO from the Henry Dunant Institute, this volume of essays lays the foundation for an international programme for the teaching of international humanitarian law within the framework of UNESCO's plan for the development of the teaching of human rights. Parts I and II deal with the development of humanitarian ideas and law within different schools of thought and cultural traditions; Part III with the law of armed conflict and Part IV with the application of international humanitarian law. It is hoped that the publication of this volume, which, in its original French edition, coincided with the 40th Anniversary of UNESCO and the International Year of Peace proclaimed in 1986 by the UN General Assembly, will reinforce the determination of the international community to achieve the aim of the founders of UNESCO, namely to construct the defences of peace in the minds of men.

Traditions and Customs of the Indian Armed Forces : Revised and Enlarged Edition /
:
The cohesion and the spirit-de-corps in the Indian Armed Forces (Army, Navy and the Air Force) is fostered by various customs and traditions, which are reflected in the daily lives of their officers and men. They are not always legally binding but they are nonetheless followed willingly without coercion. There are traditions handed down from the past - Valour, Honour and Never to Surrender - that are intrinsic and resonate the lives of servicemen and image of their regiments and formations. On the other hand there are customs and traditions that regulate the lives of soldiers, sailors and airmen on a daily basis; military courtesies, dress and mess customs, regimental traditions, ceremonial drills and parades and the like. The various facets of customs and traditions of the armed forces were originally compiled by late Maj Gen Chand N. Das. The present volume has been inspired by the original and contains edited updated and enlarged facets that have been arranged in seven parts containing 33 chapters. Each chapter deals with different aspects of customs and traditions, viz., flags, colours and emblem, military uniform and dress customs, commemorative days, state and military funerals, battle honours, war memorials, medals and ribbons and so on.

Arms and Armour in Byzantine Art : Studies in Military Iconography, 11th - 15th Centuries /
:
This volume examines the iconography of military equipment in the art of the Orthodox milieu in the Middle Ages. The authors address various problems, such as the veracity of representations of military equipment, the issue of presence of archaisms in the artwork, and the meaning and symbolism of armour in the Byzantine world. Taken together, these studies offer valuable insights for archaeologists and art historians concerned with the legacy of the medieval world, and for scholars interested in the history of military equipment. Contributors are Andrea Babuin, Timothy G. Dawson, Dejan Gjorgjievski, Piotr Ł. Grotowski, Marka Tomić, and Mamuka Tsurtsumia.

Adventure at Arms : On the Narrative Formation of Violence /
:
Adventure fiction suggests that social conflicts can be displaced from the centre to the periphery of culture in order to be settled there by violent means. Its protagonists are endowed with extraordinary physical agency and a strange resilience to bodily and psychic wounds. This volume proposes a critical analysis of adventurous violence that foregrounds narratological issues as well as their socio-historical, political, and anthropological implications. Predicated on a broad diachronic perspective that challenges simple generalizations, the articles presented here cover a wide array of genres from ancient romance to the swashbuckling novel and a variety of contexts ranging from early modern state-building to colonialism, imperialism, and modern warfare.

Control over Compliance with International Law /
:
Of all the Issues on the East-West agenda, none is more vital to the perestroika processes on the international plane than confidence on all sides that international legal obligations assumed will be wholly complied with. Increasingly such confidence requires particular often intrusive, machinery to ensure compliance to the satisfaction of the parties concerned. The revolution under perestroika is that, in East-West relations, the former protagnosts now accept that machinery is required, and the deliberations have moved onto the level of why, how much, and how it can best be accomplished. The contributions to the present volume, continuing and developing earlier Anglo-Soviet symposia on public international law, addresses the topic for the first time in a framework that transcends arms control and disarmament.

The menorah : evolving into the most important Jewish symbol /
:
The Menorah, the ancient seven-armed candelabrum, was the most important Jewish symbol both in the Land of Israel and the Diaspora. The menorah was the most important of the Temple vessels and it also came to symbolize Judaism, when it was necessary to distinguish synagogues and Jewish tombs from Christian or pagan structures. This book is a continuation of Hachlili's earlier comprehensive study, The Menorah, the Ancient Seven-armed Candelabrum: Origin, Form and Significance . Brill, 2001. It entails the compilation and study of the material of the past two decades, presenting the theme of the menorah, focusing on its development, form, meaning, significance, and symbolism in antiquity.

Humanitarian law of armed conflict challenges ahead : essays in honour of Frits Kalshoven /
:
The collection of essays is entitled `Challenges Ahead'. An ambitious title, but an appropriate one; for the contributors, as the 21st century draws near, ask themselves a number of basic questions about the future of the law in a world undergoing such profound changes. Their reflections will certainly give both cause for hope and reason to fear. This Liber Amicorum dedicated to Professor Frits Kalshoven, is written by specialists who for many years have given their best to the development and promotion of humanitarian law. It will make a significant contribution to the understanding of international humanitarian law. See Less

Bagha Jatin : Life in Bengal and Death in Orissa (1879-1915) /
:
Bagha Jatin, alias Jatindranath Mukherjee, is one of our legendary figures in the history of revolutionary efforts in India. The truth of this matter is unfortunately shrouded in inaccurate tales. Bagha Jatin was involved in the German Conspiracy Plot during the First World War, hoping to get arms from the Germans for a country-wide rising, but died fighting with the British army and police before the arms could arrive. We now know from this factually accurate account of the last phase in his career written by his grandson that the Tiger had a very sophisticated understanding of the contemporary political reality. He was not hoping to overthrow the British power in India by one single revolutionary action, but hoped to inspire his countrymen with the ideal of self-sacrifice in the cause of independence and by his own martyrdom infuse them with courage. This accurate description of his struggle with the ruling colonial power shows the nature of the initiative and also the impact it had on the national psyche. In short, it is a great book. - Tapan Raychaudhuri, Emeritus Fellow, St. Antony's College, Oxford / Professor of Indian History and Civilization, University of Oxford
