Humanitarian law of armed conflict challenges ahead : essays in honour of Frits Kalshoven /
:
The collection of essays is entitled `Challenges Ahead'. An ambitious title, but an appropriate one; for the contributors, as the 21st century draws near, ask themselves a number of basic questions about the future of the law in a world undergoing such profound changes. Their reflections will certainly give both cause for hope and reason to fear. This Liber Amicorum dedicated to Professor Frits Kalshoven, is written by specialists who for many years have given their best to the development and promotion of humanitarian law. It will make a significant contribution to the understanding of international humanitarian law. See Less

Control over Compliance with International Law /
:
Of all the Issues on the East-West agenda, none is more vital to the perestroika processes on the international plane than confidence on all sides that international legal obligations assumed will be wholly complied with. Increasingly such confidence requires particular often intrusive, machinery to ensure compliance to the satisfaction of the parties concerned. The revolution under perestroika is that, in East-West relations, the former protagnosts now accept that machinery is required, and the deliberations have moved onto the level of why, how much, and how it can best be accomplished. The contributions to the present volume, continuing and developing earlier Anglo-Soviet symposia on public international law, addresses the topic for the first time in a framework that transcends arms control and disarmament.

The Ottoman mobilization of manpower in the First World War : between voluntarism and resistance /
:
The Ottoman Mobilization of Manpower in the First World War offers a multi-faceted story of how the Ottoman Empire tried to cope with the challenges of permanent mobilization under total war conditions which reshaped state-society relations. By focusing mainly on Anatolia and the Muslim population, Mehmet Beşikçi argues that the conditions of mobilization pushed the Ottoman state to become more centralized, authoritarian and nationalist, but the increasing dependence on people paradoxically also enlarged their space of action vis-à-vis state authority. The book demonstrates that people's responses to the state's needs constituted a wide spectrum ranging from voluntary support to open resistance such as desertion. In turn, the state responded by revising its mobilization policies and reformulating new mechanisms of control at the local level.

The Protection of Civilians in Peacekeeping Operations : A Legal Obligation /
:
While the Security Council has been mandating peacekeepers to protect civilians since 1999, there is still contention on its legal meaning. Even though the concept of 'protection' can seem self-evident, as the concept of 'protection' is borrowed language, each body of law will perceive 'protection' through a different lens. However, as the mandate creates a legal obligation on UN peace missions, a clear understanding of protection is fundamental to ensure performance and accountability.

The impact of the Roman army (200 BC-AD 476) : economic, social, political, religious, and cultural aspects : proceedings of the Sixth Workshop of the International Network Impact...
:
To many inhabitants of the Roman Empire the army was the most visible representation of imperial power. Roman troops were the embodiment of imperial control. Military installations and buildings, the imperial guard, other troops, fleets, and militarily tinged works of art brought home the majesty of Rome to anybody who saw them, in Rome and in other parts of the Empire. With Roman armies came administrators, taxes and requisitions in cash and kind, traders, permanently residing veterans and military personnel, useful relations between local notables and Roman military cadre, and chances of upward social mobility. This sixth volume in the series Impact of Empire focuses on these topics.

A Functional Approach to the Legal Review of Autonomous Weapon Systems /
:
Autonomous Weapon Systems (AWS) are no longer limited to science fiction. Conflicts in the Ukraine and Gaza demonstrate an increased trend toward the use of autonomy in the use of force in armed conflict. This book analyses the art 36 legal review obligation and assesses how states can determine the legality of AWS. It proposes a new 'functional' approach to legal review that considers both weapons law and targeting rules engaged by the autonomous functionality.

Contemporary International Law Issues: Opportunities at a Time of Momentous Change /
:
Contemporary International Law Issues: Opportunities at a Time of Momentous Change is the record of the Second Joint Conference of The American Society of International Law and the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Internationaal Recht, which was held in The Hague, on July 22--24, 1993. At this event international scholars, practitioners and experts gathered to discuss the latest developments in such areas as trade and investment, the environment, human rights, law of the sea, settlement of disputes, international criminal law, NAFTA, the European Community, and commercial arbitration with particular reference to Central and Eastern Europe. The content of these Proceedings bears evidence of the wide range of dialogue that occurred during the Joint Conference and directs the reader to issues which might form suitable subjects for further research and elaboration in other scholarly work. The book will be of interest to academics and diplomats, as well as legal practitioners.

Institutional Violence /
:
Violence can be physical and psychological. It can characterize personal actions, forms of group activity, and abiding social and political policy. This book includes all of these aspects within its focus on institutional forms of violence. Institution is also a broad category, ranging from formal arrangements such as the military, the criminal code, the death penalty and prison system, to more amorphous but systemic situations indicated by parenting, poverty, sexism, work, and racism. Violence is as complex as the human beings who resort to it; its institutional forms pervade our relational lives. We are all participants in it as victims and perpetrators. The chapters in this book were written in the hope that violence can be explicated, even if not fully understood, and that such clarification can help us in devising less violent forms of living, even if it does not lead to its total abolition. The studies bring new aspects of violence to light and offer a number of suggestions for its remedy.

A Decade of Mozambique : Politics, Economy and Society 2004-2013 /
:
This chronology for 2004 to 2013 compiles the chapters on Mozambique previously published in the Africa Yearbook. Politics, Economy and Society South of the Sahara . The country has over the years remained one of the poorest, and poverty is not declining. But the discovery of huge gas fields could bring changes by the mid 2020s. During the period under review, the sheen began to fade from Mozambique's status as a donor darling, as donors increasingly objected to corruption while government was angered by donor impositions and took an increasingly autonomous line. The former liberation movement Frelimo remains the predominant party and has won all national elections, while two presidents have stepped down after two terms. The main opposition party Renamo retains an armed wing launching small military actions. A second opposition party gained control of four cities. A younger and better-educated generation that remembers neither the liberation struggle nor the 1982-92 civil war is beginning to challenge the established leadership.
