This book contains twenty-nine articles presented to Geoffrey Martin by his friends and colleagues in celebration of the long and distinguished career of this eminent Egyptologist. The main areas of Professor Martin's scholarly interests are well represented with a wide range of studies on Early Dynastic Egypt and on the history and chronology, art and archaeology of the New Kingdom, often related to his excavations at Saqqara, Amarna, and in the Valley of the Kings. Other essays deal with Old Kingdom mastabas at Giza, Saqqara and Abusir and with the history of Egyptology and early excavators in Egypt. To reflect the recipient's broad Egyptological interests there are also studies on fragments of a shrine of Mentuhotep II from Gebelein and its geographical implications, a Middle Kingdom wooden statue from Asyut, a Twenty-second Dynasty mummy-cartonnage in the Gayer-Anderson Museum, and Thirtieth Dynasty reliefs from the Theban Precinct of Mut. In The Representations of Women in the Middle Kingdom Tombs of Officials Ľubica Hudáková offers an in-depth analysis of female iconography in the decorative programme of Middle Kingdom non-royal tombs, highlighting changes and innovations in comparison to the Old Kingdom. Previously considered too uniform, the study represents the first systematic investigation of two-dimensional images of women and reveals their variability in space and time. Hudáková examines the roles appointed to women by analyzing how they are depicted in a variety of contexts. Taking into account their postures, gestures, garments, hairstyles, size of the body, age as well as attributes and tools used by them, along with the scene orientation, she traces diachronic and diatopic developments and regional traditions in the Middle Kingdom tomb decoration.

Nefertiti's Sun Temple publishes stone relief fragments excavated from the site of Kom el-Nana at Tell el-Amarna, Egypt, dating to approximately 1350 BCE. This is the first time relief fragments can be associated with a specific wall from a specific temple at Tell el-Amarna. Jacquelyn Williamson reconstructs the architecture, art, and inscriptions from the site to demonstrate Kom el-Nana is the location of Queen Nefertiti's 'Sunshade of Re' temple and another more enigmatic structure that served the funerary needs of the non-royal courtiers at the ancient city. The art and inscriptions provide new information about Queen Nefertiti and challenge assumptions about her role in Pharaoh Akhenaten's religious movement dedicated to the sun god Aten.
