The origins of visual culture in the Islamic world : aesthetics, art and architecture in early Islam /

"In tenth-century Iraq, a group of Arab intellectuals and scholars known as the Ikhwan al-Safa began to make their intellectual mark on the society around them. A mysterious organisation, the identities of its members have never been clear. But its contribution to the intellectual thought, philosophy, art and culture of the era - and indeed subsequent ones - is evident. In the visual arts, for example, Hamdouni Alami argues that the theory of human proportions which the Ikwan al-Safa propounded (something very similar to those of da Vinci), helped shape the evolution of the philosophy of aesthetics, art and architecture in the tenth and eleventh centuries CE, in particular in Egypt under the Fatimid rulers. With its roots in Pythagorean and Neoplatonic views on the role of art and architecture, the impact of this theory of specific and precise proportion was widespread. One of the results of this extensive influence is a historic shift in the appreciation of art and architecture and their perceived role in the cultural sphere. The development of the understanding of the interplay between ethics and aesthetics resulted in a movement which emphasised more abstract and pious contemplation of art, as opposed to previous views which concentrated on the enjoyment of artistic works (such as music, song and poetry). And it is with this shift that we see the change in art forms from those devoted to supporting the Umayyad caliphs and the opulence of the Abbasids, to an art which places more emphasis on the internal concepts of 'reason' and 'spirituality'. Using the example of Fatimid art and views of architecture (including the first Fatimid mosque in al-Mahdiyya, Tunisia), Hamdouni Alami offers analysis of the debates surrounding the ethics and aesthetics of the appreciation of Islamic art and architecture from a vital time in medieval Middle Eastern history, and shows their similarity with aesthetic debates of Italian Renaissance." -- Publisher's website.

The theme of the book is the Hellenistic epistolary novel which describes a fictional meeting between Democritus and Hippocrates. The author traces the later history of this story as part of the legend of the laughing philosopher on the one hand and of the history of melancholy on the other and demonstrates the interdependence of all three traditions in text editions, translations, paraphrases, commentaries, verse and painting from ancient times through to the Renaissance. He shows how the Stoic-Cynical tradition of 'Philosophus ridens' and the medical concept of 'Typus melancholicus sanguinicus' come to amalgamate into the early modern Humanist literary and iconographical tradition of 'Democritus ridens melancholicus'. In so doing the author also shows the importance of this tradition to the subsequent interpretation of the epistolary novel and its influence on modern research into the Hippocratic corpus and melancholy. The work links important themes in the fields of ancient philosophy, ancient medicine, art history and Renaissance studies and will offer thought-provoking material to many of those working in these areas.

Profile of a Forgotten Capital : Murshidabad in the Eighteenth Century /

The role of Murshidabad, the capital of Bengal in the eighteenth century, in the political, social and economic life of the province is now almost lost to public memory. But the history of Murshidabad during the period is indeed a saga of romantic as well as tragic events which is unique. It's a pity that most works on Murshidabad, though commendable, were written a long time back. No doubt, quite a few excellent books and articles on the subject were published in the last several decades but unfortunately they deal with only certain aspects, and were not comprehensive histories of Murshidabad. So it was imperative to write a book covering all the aspects of the former capital. Here the author has tried to narrate an authentic history of Murshidabad with the help of evidence, both qualitative and quantitative, collected from various archives and libraries in Europe and India for more than four decades. He establishes in the book that it was the time of the Nawabi regime in the first half of the eighteenth century when Bengal witnessed its 'golden age'. He also explains critically and elaborately the activities of the three merchant-princes, and gives a new interpretation of the reasons behind the Plassey conspiracy and the subsequent revolution. The volume comes up with interesting facts about the Begums of Murshidabad, and finally, makes a critical analysis of Murshidabad's trade, industry, and economy on the one hand, and the society, culture and architecture on the other - all of which makes it a significant contribution on the subject.

The tomb of the priests of Amun : burial assemblages in the Egyptian Museum of Florence /

The Tomb of the Priests of Amun, also known as Bab el-Gasus, was uncovered in 1891 at Deir el-Bahari (Thebes). The site proved to be the largest undisturbed tomb ever found in Egypt, as there were found the intact burials of 153 individuals that lived under the 21st Dynasty (ca. 1069-945 BC). This outstanding find was subsequently divided in lots of antiquities and dispersed by 17 nations. This volume presents the first comprehensive publication of the Italian Lot, kept in the Egyptian Museum of Florence. Besides the formal description of the objects, a critical assessment of the collection is provided regarding the reconstruction of the burial assemblages, the reuse of the burial equipment and the art historical examination of coffin decoration.
