Territorial Investigations /

: Nowadays there are many spaces of fascination in visual art. Of course, installative space and contextual space have been on the art scene for awhile. However, they are now accompanied by other spaces such as urban space, architectural space, cyberspace, hyperspace, and screen-based space. In this volume, architects, artists, theorists, three symposia and four exhibitions attempt to find answers to questions such as: Could the architectonic study and/or deconstruction of space play a decisive role in the shift of attention to space? Which theoretical factors structure the current experience and meaning of space? What is the role of the aesthetization of the environment on our concept of space? Smooth Space - VCC de Brakke Grond, Amsterdam - is a project at the heart of this publication. Spatial interests range from how the concept of space is redefined and exploited in our current visual culture to how the digital world influences our spatial concepts. Participants in this issue are: Jean Attali, Annette W. Balkema, Andrew Benjamin, Ole Bouman, Bernard Cache, Paul Crowther, Christoph Fink, Hugo Heyrman, Hou Hanru, Rem Koolhaas, Geert Lovink, Karlheinz Lüdeking, Bartomeu Mari, Kas Oosterhuis, Jan van de Pavert, Keiko Sato, Eran Schaerf, Lara Schnitger, Roger Scruton, Martin Seel, Nasrine Seraji, Henk Slager, Sjoerd Soeters, Lars Spuybroek, Ann Van Sevenant, Peter Weibel and Mark Wigley.

Making Copies in Early Modern Times : Models and Copies in an Interdisciplinary Context /

: This book explores new approaches to the study of the complex relation between models and copies. Excellent studies dedicated to copies continue to be published, focusing mainly on works of art and techniques, but the research should be extended in directions that have remained virtually unexplored until now, considering new perspectives and contexts. This volume intends to push the boundaries of current research on copies, proposing new points of view and considering new relations between models and their reproductions. Contributors include: R. Arnheim, E. Vandeweghe, F. Gallaire, B. Leshem, C. Naya, P. Alvarez, S. Suykens, S. Rose, D. Boerio, M. Rijks, M. Bellavitis, B. Anderson, Guthrie, E. Giffin, and S. Abplanalp.

World Literature in and for Pandemic Times /

: Exploring the emotional and political ramifications of pandemics worldwide, the contributors to this collection treat material from wisdom literature and philosophy to historical fiction, poetry, graphic novels, and hypertexts, and they discuss works from Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Cuba, Ecuador, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Guatemala, India, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Turkey, and the United States. Even now that the Covid-19 pandemic has been brought under some degree of control, the lessons-and the wounds-of this traumatic time will long be with us. As we prepare for the inevitable appearance of the next pandemic, world literature can help us create solidarity and collective connection in the years ahead.

Les ottomans et le temps /

: In recent years, there has been an increased interest in the study of the concept of time in the Ottoman Empire. Many existing studies focused on the technical aspects, e.g. the measure of time, and the instruments to do this (like clepsydras, water clocks, hourglasses, and sundials found on the facades of mosques and medreses). Other aspects were neglected, like the various Ottoman experiments with time and the Ottomans' conceptions of time. This collective volume addresses several of these forgotten aspects of the political, social and cultural modalities of time in the Ottoman Empire.
: 1 online resource (vii, 387 pages) : illustrations. : Includes bibliographical references. : 9789004217799 : 1380-6076 ; : Available to subscribing member institutions only.

Jesuit Rhetoric across Space and Time : Local and Global Perspectives /

: A product of Renaissance educational thought, Jesuit rhetoric has trained generations of churchmen and lay citizens right up to the present day. This book aims to show the wealth of current international research on Jesuit rhetoric, in its pedagogical dimension (from sixteenth-century manuals to today's university writing courses), its practical implementation (in speeches, music or theology). These dialogues span both religious contexts-engagements with Protestants, Jews, Orthodox Christians, and Dominicans-and geographical ones, including encounters between Europe and regions such as Sri Lanka, China, and Japan.

The Twelver Shia in Modern Times : Religious Culture & Political History /

: This volume - grown out of an international conference at Freiburg University in 1999 - deals with various aspects of Shiite Islam since the 18th century. It is divided into two major parts, the first of which is dedicated to traditional institutions of theology and learning and their transformation in modern times. The second part treats internal debates and the activities of Shiite dissidents, showing that Shiism is far from being uniform. Ideological and political developments in the 20th century and especially the Islamic Revolution in Iran have shaped the image of modern Shiism more than any other tendencies and are therefore also discussed in greater detail in Parts three and four. This book reflects the state of the art in this field of Islamic studies, its 21 contributions covering three centuries and a vast geographical range.

Elements de la terminologie du temps en egyptien ancien : une etude de semantique lexicale en diachronie /

: This book has a double scope: first, bringing a contribution to the knowledge and understanding of the time conceptions in Ancient Egypt through a lexical study and, second, contributing to the definition of a methodological frame for lexical semantics in Ancient Egyptian.0In the introduction, the reader will first find a state of the art from the point of view of time-related studies in Egyptology, lexical semantics studies, and classifiers studies. The next introductory sections deal with the links between time, space and motion, with the complexity of time conceptions in Ancient Egypt, and with the impact of this plural vision on the lexicon.0The first part of the core study aims at establishing a proposition of canvas for the semasiology of nouns. It also presents the semasiological analysis of eight lexemes belonging to the unbounded time domain: #.t (moment), wnw.t (hour), nw (moment), tr (time), H#w (epoch), rk (epoch), oHow (lifetime) and Hnty (period).0The second part is dedicated to the onomasiology of the unbounded time domain, as well as some of its connections with some contiguous domains like space.

Epigraphy of art : ancient Greek vase-inscriptions and vase-paintings /

: Ancient Greek vase-paintings offer broad-ranging and unprecedented early perspectives on the often intricate interplay of images and texts. By bringing together, for the first time, an international group of leading scholars in classical art and archaeology who have worked on vase-inscriptions, this book investigates both epigraphic technicalities of Attic and non-Attic inscriptions, and their broader, iconographic and sociocultural, significance. The ten chapters in this book propose original and expert methodological approaches to the study of vase-inscriptions and vase-paintings, while also foregrounding the outstanding but not fully examined importance of the area of vase-inscriptions for current research on ancient Greek visual representations.

Art & Magic : Curating the Western Art Witch Movement /

: The magical images and protest tools of Artemisia Gentileschi to Amanda Yates Garcia, also known as the Oracle of LA, are revealed in this book. Art Witches have created powerful images that resonate with beauty and activism, from Italian courtrooms in the 1500s to binding spells for the US Trump presidency in 2016. For the first time, this book connects the genealogy of the image of the witch from historical to contemporary artists. It intertwines artistic purpose with social ills and equity issues and probes how this narrative is exposed and curated in museums and memorials focused on witchcraft. The collection of images, artist interviews, and a case study of the two artists that make up Hilma's Ghost provide recognition and a new context for this important and rapidly growing art movement.

Art, Philosophy, and Ideology : Writings on Aesthetics and Visual Culture from the Avantgarde to Postsocialism /

: This volume presents a selection of aesthetic and art theoretical writings by the internationally renowned philosopher Aleš Erjavec from the 1990s to the present. Erjavec was an active participant in the artistic revolt in Slovenia throughout the 1980 and became one of the most notable international theorists of late- and post-socialist developments in art. His work also extended to new, emergent forms of contemporary art and visual culture in global art and culture networks. The diverse contexts and artists with which he has engaged gives him a unique critical perspective on major debates in philosophical aesthetics and art theory.

South Arabian art : art history in pre-Islamic Yemen /

: "The ancient Kingdoms of South Arabia have been recognized as the cradle of civilization for the Arabian Peninsula and their contribution to the identity of Arabia cannot be underestimated. For the first time, this volume provides scholars and students a coherent synthesis of South Arabian art, from its origins, to its gradual development in a distinctive local art and, finally, to its decline with the advent of Islam. Each chapter provides a historical summary of the period, a review of representative art and a discussion of the distinctive character, stylistic and iconographic originality of South Arabian art, shaped by a creative interpretation of external influences."--Page 4 of cover.
