Cittadini of Venice : Shaping Identities between Networks and Patronage (c. 1530-1690) /

: In this volume Giulia Zanon sheds new light on our grasp of social hierarchy and the possibilities for social mobility in pre-modern Italy. By adopting an interdisciplinary approach that combines deep archival research with a multitude of artistic and architectural artefacts, this work breaks new ground by contextualizing the part played by social relationships and the arts in publicly affirming and displaying the prestige of the middling sorts, the cittadini , in early modern Venice.

Rationality and the Poet : Recollections of Bertolt Brecht and Selected Writings /

: Rationality and the Poet is a lively account of the discussions between the young Bertolt Brecht and the Marxian Political Economist Fritz Sternberg. Set in the late Weimer Republic, these reminiscences chart the rise and fall of the friendship between the poet and the theoretician, from their initial encounters and Brecht's induction into Marxist political economy to their increasing tensions over the Soviet Union. Sternberg charted an independent position between the Second and Third Internationals and remains a largely undiscovered theorist of the period spanning the end of the First World War to the Cold War. In this volume a number of his writings have been selected from the period of his most intensive friendship with Brecht to highlight the versatile and independent socialist cast of Sternberg's mind. Here published in English for the first time, Rationality and the Poet casts a new light on the development of Brecht's politics and the relationship between society and drama that informed his art.

Inscriptions from Lisht : Texts from Burial Chambers /

: The inscribed objects found in or associated with the burial chambers of Middle Kingdom officials and other individuals provide an important addition to our understanding and appreciation of ancient Egyptian funerary culture. These include the coffins and sarcophagi as well as canopic chests and jars, mummy masks, ivory wands, miniature coffins, and shawabtis. This volume incorporates all such inscribed material associated with more than one hundred burial chambers and graves found at Lisht North and Lisht South, two sites excavated by the Egyptian Expedition of The Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1907 until 1934 and from 1984 to 1991. Two kings, several members of the royal family, and many elite persons, as well as a community of middle-class people found their resting place in and around the royal pyramids at Lisht, which served as the principal cemetery for Egypt's capital during the Middle Kingdom (ca. 2030-1650 B.C.). The material in the corpus published here represents a sequence of seven chronological phases at Lisht that range from the reigns of the kings Amenemhat I and Senwosret I through the late Dynasty XIII and the Second Intermediate Period. The inscribed texts presented in this corpus are transliterated and translated, and are accompanied by extensive drawings that meticulously detail these texts, as well as annotations to some previously published material. The lavishly illustrated volume includes heretofore unpublished photographs from the Department of Egyptian Art's archives. Each object described in Inscriptions from Lisht has been assigned a code referring to the primary individual associated with it, and its description includes transliterations of the deceased's name(s) and title(s). Because the location of an inscription on a coffin or sarcophagus is usually significant and because some of these include multiple texts, the author has designed a system of references that reflects the location on the object. Further, the catalogue of objects draws on Museum archives and also provides information concerning the findspot and current location of the object as well as relevant archival material and bibliography." --Provided by publisher

Cinematic Cairo : Egyptian urban modernity from reel to real /

: "The relationship between the city and cinema is formidable. The images and sounds of the city found in movies are perhaps the only experience that many people will have of cities they may never visit. Films influence the way we construct images of the world, and accordingly, in many instances, how we operate within it. Cinematic Cairo offers a history of Cairo's urban modernity using film as the primary source of exploration, and cinematic space as both an analytical tool and a medium of critique. Cairo has provided rich subject material for the Egyptian film industry since the inception of the art form at the end of the nineteenth century. The "reel" city-imagined, perceived, and experienced-provides the spatial domain that mirrors change and allows for an interrogation of the "real" city as it encountered modernity over the course of a century. Bringing together chapters by architects and art and literary historians, this volume explores this parallel and convergent relationship through two sections. The first uses films from the 1930s to the end of the twentieth century to illustrate the development of a modern Cairo and its modern subjects. The second section is focused on tracing the transformation of the cinematic city under conditions of neoliberalism, religious fundamentalism, and gender tensions. The result is a comprehensive narrative of the urban modernity of one of the most important cities in the Arab world and Global South."--

The Coming of Consumer Society /

: The present volume adds momentum to the ongoing discourse on consumerism in India and offers a fresh perspective by arguing that India is not just a consumer market but a consumer society in the making. There is no consensus on the birth, place and context of a consumer society amongst historians. And for scholars of contemporary social life, consumer societies, till recently were held to be akin to societies in the late stage of capitalism or those having completed their transition from feudalism to post-industrialism. However, given the processes of globalization and liberalization of new global economic order, consumerism as an ideology, a world view and a practice is fast 'coming of age' in other societies across the globe. Hence, the earlier intellectual lexicon stands replaced by a new consumer epistemology signalling the coming of new consumer societies in hitherto unimagined locales such as India. The varied essays in the volume develop the themes of consumption, brands, representation, and identity construction in some new settings - so far unexplored in the Indian context - for instance ethnic brands such as Fabindia; tribal art in new digitized forms; fashion; and so on. The strength of the book lies in traversing not just fresh sites and objects of consumer desire, but also in bringing together a host of multidisciplinary and theoretical perspectives such as Marxism, feminism, postmodernism, and post-colonialism. The book would be of interest to students and researchers of sociology, anthropology, politics, cultural studies and media studies.

Adab and modernity : a "civilising" process? (sixteenth--twenty-first century) /

: Adab is a concept situated at the heart of Arabic and Islamic civilisation. Adab is etiquette, ethics, and literature. It is also a creative synthesis, a relationship within a configuration. What became of it, towards modernity ? The question of the "civilising process" (Norbert Elias) helps us reflect on this story. During the modern period, maintaining one's identity while entering into what was termed "civilisation" ( al-tamaddun ) soon became a leitmotiv . A debate on what was or what should be culture, ethics, and norms in Middle Eastern societies accompanied this evolution. The resilient notion of adab has been in competition with the Salafist focus on mores ( akhlāq ). Still, humanism, poetry, and transgression are constants in the history of adab .
