The authority of Scripture in Reformed theology : truth and trust /

: The authority of Scripture is the cornerstone of Reformed theology. Calvin introduced the term autopistos from Greek philosophy to express that this authority does not depend on the church or on rational arguments, but is self-convincing. After dealing with Calvin's Institutes, the development of Reformed orthodoxy, and the positions of Benjamin B. Warfield and Herman Bavinck, the author draws theological conclusions, advocating a renewed emphasis on the autopistia of Scripture as starting point for Reformed theology in a postmodern context. The subject-object scheme leads to separating the certainty of faith from the authority of Scripture. The autopistia of Scripture, understood as a confessional statement, implies that truth and trust are inseparable.

The works in logic by Bosniac authors in Arabic /

: The book offers and explains the hypothesis that the end of the 13th century does not denote the "final stage" and the "stage of decay" of Arabic logic as the "Aristotelian logic" continues its life and development in the following period in Bosnia and Herzegovina ̶ either as a subject within the educational system, or as general propaedeutics for each scientific thought ̶ where it had skilled interpreters. The book proves that the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina used almost the same way to compose writings in the field of logic: one in Latin within West-European cultural and theological tradition, and the others in Arabic, within Arabic-islamic tradition.

Discourse in ritual studies /

: Discourse in Ritual Studies invites you to enter a conversation on the topic of liturgy from the perspective of ritual studies. Since liturgical topics are not among the most frequently addressed issues in ritual studies, this volume supplies a need for studies of public worship that take into account the multidisciplinary and innovative research in ritual studies while dealing with basic issues of religious studies and theology. The contributing authors share an action-oriented and empirical interest in ritual studies while not losing sight of perennial and normative questions that characterize the study of liturgy. Thus, a valuable discourse unfolds that opens up new opportunities for worship research in ritual studies. Contributers are: Johannes van der Ven, Ronald Grimes, Chris Hermans, Jacques Janssen, Jean-Pierre Wils, Georg Essen, Aad de Jong, Thomas Quartier, Remco Robinson, Lieve Gommers, Irene Houwer, and Hans Schilderman.

The formation of the Sudanese Mahdist state ceremony and symbols of authority : 1882-1898 /

: This book is the first analysis of the Sudanese Mahdiyya from a socio-political perspective that treats how relationships of authority were enunciated through symbol and ceremony. The book focuses on how the Mahdi and his second-in-command and ultimate successor, the Khalifa Abdallahi, used symbols, ceremony and ritual to articulate their power, authority and legitimacy first within the context of resistance to the imperial Turco-Egyptian forces that had been occupying the Nilotic Sudan since 1821, and then within the context of establishing an Islamic state. This study examines five key elements from a historical perspective: the importance of Islamic mysticism as manifested in Sufi brotherhoods in the articulation of power in the Sudan; ceremony as handmaids of power and legitimacy; charismatic leadership; the routinization of charisma and the formation of a religious state purportedly based upon the first Islamic community in the seventh century C.E.

The uncertainty of a hearing : a study of the sudden change of mood in the Psalms of lament /

: An interesting feature in the lament psalms is the sudden change of mood. Unfortunately, as the term that has come to be associated with the subject indicates - 'Certainty of a Hearing' - the change of mood is understood only in terms of a movement from lament to praise. This has led to a redefinition of lament in terms of petition and an overemphasis on praise. The present book seeks to redress this one-sided emphasis by drawing attention to the other movements in the Psalter - the reverse movement from praise to lament, return to lament after praise and the alternation between the two. We do not only have a 'Certainty of a Hearing'; we also have an 'Uncertainty of a Hearing'.

The invasion of Sennacherib in the book of Kings : a source-critical and rhetorical study of 2 Kings 18-19 /

: The invasion of Sennacherib in 701 BCE is a classic issue for both biblical scholars and historians alike. Extant Assyrian, Biblical and even Greek texts all refer to Sennacherib and many different theories have been put forward in attempts to understand the relationship between these various accounts. Despite the rise of new literary-rhetorical criticism in biblical studies, studies tackling the problem of Sennacherib's invasion have been dominated by historical-critical work on the issue and have virtually ignored rhetorical methodology. Against this trend, this book employs both traditional historical-critical methods and newer rhetorical methods in an effort to utilize the biblical texts in a historical reconstruction of this famous Assyrian assault on ancient Judah.

Zion's rock-solid foundations : an exegetical study of the Zion text in Isaiah 28:16 /

: No other biblical book ascribes such a prominent place to the theme of 'Zion' as the book of Isaiah does. One of the most important statements regarding Zion is to be found in Isa. 28:16. The text speaks of the laying of a foundation stone in Zion and enjoys an important place in New Testament preaching since it is associated with the advent of Jesus Christ. The present study addresses the interpretation of Isa. 28:16 in its Old Testament context. Its significance lies in the fresh contribution it makes to our understanding of the Zion text in question and its importance for establishing the role played by Zion and the so-called Zion tradition in the preaching of Isaiah.

Granddaughter of the sun : a study of Euripides' Medea /

: This book attempts to view Medea in a positive light: looking not just at her failed relationships, but also at her successful ones and commenting on her intellect rather than just her clever manipulations of men. It tries to see her (or her author, who brings Medea home to Athens), as something of a political hero. The work considers the multiple facets of Medea, as the ideal wife, as a loving mother, as a woman among women, and how Medea becomes the author of her own story. The author asks what Medea is in the last scene: a demon or one of us; how she relates to the city-state; why this heroic drama is presented through the voices of two slaves.

Language and interpretation in the Syriac text of Ben Sira : a comparative linguistic and literary study /

: This book is the result of an innovative linguistic study of the Syriac translation of Ben Sira. It contains both a traditional philological analysis, incorporating matters of text-historical interest and translation technique, and also the results of a computational linguistic analysis of phrases, clauses and texts. It arrives at new linguistic insights, including a proposal for a corpus-based description of phrase structure based on a so-called maximum matrix. The book also addresses the fundamentally different way in which a text is approached in a computer-assisted analysis compared with the way in which this is done in traditional philological approaches. It demonstrates how the computer-assisted analysis can fruitfully shed light on or supplement traditional philological research.

A plague of texts? : a text-critical study of the so-called 'plagues narrative' in Exodus 7:14-11:10 /

: Prior to any attempt to study a text at the literary level, the textual material itself has to be carefully established. It is for this reason that the present volume is devoted to a detailed text-critical study of the 'physical' text of the 'Plagues Narrative' in Exod. 7:14-11:10. In the first chapter, the author formulates a number of prolegomena relating to textual criticism as a discipline, the extant textual material, the terminology employed and the methodological model that serves as the basis of this study. In the second chapter, data provided by the various textual forms of the 'Plagues Narrative' in Exod. 7:14-11:10, namely MT, LXX, SamP, 4QpaleoExodᵐ, 4QpaleoGen-Exodᶩ, 2QExodᵃ, 4QExodᶜ, 4QGen-Exodᵃ and 4QExodʲ, are registered and described. The extant textual versions themselves are presented in the form of a synopsis, added as an appendix to this book. The third and final chapter offers the text-critical evaluation of all 'text-relevant' variants.

Roman Imperial Titulature and Chronology, A.D. 235-284 /

: Peachin, M. Roman Imperial Titulature and Chronology, A.D. 235-284. 1989 This study is a basic work of reference for the history of the Roman Empire during the midthird century A.D. The book consists of two principal parts. Part two, upon which the first is based, is a catalogue that lists all known variants of the titulature of each emperor from this period. In turn, each variant is accompanied by a list of all attestations (including coins, inscriptions, papyri) of that formula. An introduction traces briefly the historical development of the official titular formula, and then discusses the method of granting this formula at the beginning of the period in question. The introduction is followed by a chapter that evaluates the source material. Given a secure basic understanding of how the ancient testimonia are to be employed, the book then progresses to a chapter that sets out a complete chronology for the period. SA 29 (1989), 543 p. The founder of the Hare Krishnas as seen by devotees : a cognitive study of religious charisma /

: The Hare Krishna movement is one of the most well-known new religious movements in the Western societies. It was founded in New York in 1966 by the Indian monk A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda (1896-1977). The fact that it emerged during the heyday of the countercultural protests is often invoked in the explanations of its success. This book offers a completely new account for the rise and growth of the Hare Krishna movement by analysing it from the viewpoint of cognitive science of religion. It focuses on the charisma of the founder-guru through the writings of his earliest disciples and also takes a close look at the theology and ritual practices of the movement.

Expectations of the end : a comparative traditio-historical study of eschatological, apocalyptic...

: Since a fuller range of Qumran sectarian and not clearly sectarian texts and recensions has recently become available to us, its implications for the comparative study of eschatological, apocalyptic and messianic ideas in the Dead Sea Scrolls and in the New Testament need to be explored anew. This book situates eschatological ideas in Qumran literature between biblical tradition and developments in late Second Temple Judaism and examines how the Qumran evidence on eschatology, resurrection, apocalypticism, and messianism illuminates Palestinian Jewish settings of emerging Christianity. The present study challenges previous dichotomies between realized and futuristic eschatology, wisdom and apocalypticism and provides many new insights into intra-Jewish dimensions to eschatological ideas in Palestinian Judaism and in the early Jesus-movement.

The modal system of earlier Egyptian complement clauses : a study in pragmatics in a dead language /

: The present work proposes a novel analysis of Complement Clauses in Earlier Egyptian language. Contrary to previous assumptions, the grammatical organisation of these constructions is shown to be based on differentiation between Realis and Irrealis modality. The different types of complement clauses attested in Earlier Egyptian are surveyed utilising recent linguistic research on modality and pragmatics. The discussion is based on numerous examples from the ancient texts and on comparisons with many other languages. Emerging from this investigation is a coherent and principled system for expressing Realis and Irrealis meaning in this most ancient of written languages. This book is of notable value to Egyptologists working with texts and to all those interested in modality, grammar, and cognition.

The canonization of al-Bukhārī and Muslim : the formation and function of the Sunnī ḥadīth canon /

: The two 'Authentic' ḥadīth collections of al-Bukhārī and Muslim are the most famous books in Islam after the Qur'ān - a reality left unstudied until now. This book charts the origins, development and functions of these two texts through the lens of canonicity. It examines how the books went from controversial to indispensable as they became the common language for discussing the Prophet's legacy among the various Sunni schools of law. The book also studies the role of the ḥadīth canon in ritual and narrative. Finally, it investigates the canonical culture built around the texts as well as the trend in Sunni scholarship that rejected it, exploring this tension in contemporary debates between Salafī movements and the traditional schools of law.
