In this collaborative volume, the editors examine the role of Judeo-languages in literary, social, religious, and cultural channels of knowledge transfer, particularly in the dissemination of oral and written traditions beyond the core intellectual elite to the secondary Jewish intelligentsia and broader audiences. This phenomenon is evident in Yiddish, Judeo-Spanish, Judeo-Arabic, Judeo-Italian, Judeo-French, and Judeo-Turkish from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The studies in this book present a wide range of manuscripts and printed editions, highlighting the diverse functions and roles of Judeo-languages as vehicles for the distribution, transmission, and mediation of knowledge.

The radical aporetism of the treatise on first principles written by the Neoplatonic philosopher Damascius may be understood as a unique approach to understand, in different ways and on an extremely high and abstract level, not only these principles but also ourselves as thinkers. In the quest to grasp ultimate reality, this treatise is also a deep reflection on the processes and limitations of human thought in relation to supreme principles. Damascius uncovers the many concealed snares of language, the limitations of our cognitive apparatus, and the common misconceptions about first principles, thereby revealing the underlying reasons for our aporias as well as their protreptic meaning and redeeming function. This study offers a new and positive reading of Damascius' equally extreme and fascinating aporetic philosophy. L'aporétique radicale du traité des Principes Premiers du néoplatonicien Damaskios doit être comprise comme étant l'unique voie d'accès vers une compréhension différente, supérieure et purifiée des principes premiers et de nous-mêmes. The Syntax and Semantics of Wh-Clauses in Classical Greek : Relatives, Interrogatives, Exclamatives /

Adapting tools recently developed in general linguistics and dwelling on a solid corpus study, this book offers the first comprehensive view on Classical Greek wh -clauses since Monteil (1963) and scrutinizes how wh -items (ὅς, ὅστις, τίς) distribute across the different clause types. False ideas are discarded (e.g., there are no τίς relative clauses, ὅστις does not take over ὅς' functions). This essay furthermore teases apart actual neutralization and so-far-unknown subtle distinctions. Who knew that ὅστις is featured in three different types of appositive clauses? In the interrogative domain, an analysis is given of what licenses ὅς to pop in and τίς to pop out. Tackling these topics and more, this essay draws a coherent picture of the wh -clause system, whose basis is the notion of (non)identification.
