This volume offers a historical and factual commentary on Herodotus book 6. The introductory discussions include one on the background to the Ionian revolt and the role of Histiaeus. The commentary aims to assess the reality behind Herodotus' text: the revolt and its aftermath; the various aspects of Spartan affairs in the middle of the book; Datis' invasion of Eretria and Attica; and Miltiades' expedition the following year. Material that cannot conveniently be dealt with in the commentary itself, and a number of related topics that merit consideration, are considered in a series of appendices. In early eleventh century Zaragoza, the eminent Jewish scholar Abū l-Walīd Marwān ibn Janāḥ wrote a glossary containing almost 1100 entries, entitled Kitāb al-Talkhīṣ . This important text, considered lost until recently, contains Arabic and foreign-language names of simple drugs, weights, measures, and other medical terms. In the present volume, the Kitāb al-Talkhīṣ is edited and translated for the first time by Gerrit Bos and Fabian Käs. In detailed commentaries, the editors identify the substances mentioned in the Talkhīṣ . They also elaborate on the role of the text in the history of Arabic glossaries concerned with medical nomenclature. Special attention is paid to Ibn Janāḥ's Ibero-Romance phytonyms, analysed in depth by Mailyn Lübke and Guido Mensching.

The Qurʾān is a complex text, and it has been regarded as such since the very beginning. Qurʾān interpretation or tafsīr was already practiced by the Prophet's nephew ʿAbdallāh b. al-ʿAbbās, who used folklore and poetry to interpret his uncle's revelations. With the passing of time, Qurʾānic exegesis developed from a mere branch of tradition ( ḥadīth ) into a full-fledged, independent discipline. The earliest Persian Qurʾān commentary was a translation of Abū Jaʿfar al-Ṭabarī's (d. 311/923) Jāmiʿ al-bayān ʿan taʾwīl āy al-Qurʾān , made in 345/956. The Persian commentary contained in the present volume was composed in 890/1485 in Herat by Wāʿiẓ Kāshifī (d. 910/1504-05), a prolific author, preacher and mystic of the Timurid era. Originally meant to comprise four volumes, it was discontinued halfway the fourth sura, and is only partially reproduced in the present edition. Kāshifī's detailed, literary commentary stands out by his unique use of the esoteric properties of letters and numbers.

Commentaries on the Qurʾān exist almost from the time of the Prophet. Sometimes they consists of a commentary on just one verse, like Ṣadr al-Dīn Shīrāzī's (d. 1050/1640) Tafsīr āyat al-Kursī , or on one single sura, like the latter's Tafsīr sūrat Yūsuf . Sometimes a commentary focusses on verses sharing some common theme, like Fakhr al-Dīn Astarābādī's (d. 1028/1619) Tafsīr āyāt al-aḥkām , comprising all those verses from which legal rules are derived. Commentaries on the entire Qurʾān are always voluminous, like Abū Jaʿfar al-Ṭabarī's (d. 311/923) Jāmiʿ al-bayān ʿan taʾwīl āy al-Qurʾān . Many commentaries were begun but never finished. The present work by Mīr Muḥammad Riḍā Muʾmin-i Khātūnābādī (early 12th/18th cent.) is an example of this. Planned as a complete commentary in four parts, only the first part (until the end of Sūrat al-Nisāʾ , no. 4) was finished and just the introduction and the commentary on the Fātiḥa are published here. Persian, elegant but accessible prose, ethico-mystical and literary elements.

Meanings of Antiquity is the first dedicated study of how the oldest Japanese myths, recorded in the eighth-century texts Kojiki and Nihon shoki , changed in meaning and significance between 800 and 1800 CE. Generations of Japanese scholars and students have turned to these two texts and their creation myths to understand what it means to be Japanese and where Japan fits into the world order. As the shape and scale of the world explained by these myths changed, these myths evolved in turn. Rashīd al-Dīn Maybudī (fl. early 6th/12th century) was a Persian scholar and mystic who is best known for his voluminous commentary on the Qurʾān, the Kashf al-asrār wa-ʿuddat al-abrār . The commentary breaks down into 465 'sessions' ( majlis , here: 'lectures') around a number of verses and their explanation. Each session divides into three 'rounds' ( nawba ): 1. the Arabic text and its Persian translation, 2. a standard commentary, and 3. a mystical appreciation of the deeper levels of the text. While the first two rounds are equally in Arabic and Persian, round three is usually mostly in Persian, indicating that Maybudī wanted to ensure that his words were comprehensible to interested non-academics, notably to mystics. Annabel Keeler's Sufi Hermeneutics: The Qur'an Commentary of Rashīd al-Dīn Maybudī , offered in Persian translation here, analyses Maybudī's work from three angles: mystical hermeneutics, Maybudī's borrowings from the mystic ʿAbdallāh Anṣārī (d. 481/1088), and his mystical interpretation of the Qurʾān on prophets.

Author of a large number of scholarly works, he is especially famous for such treatises as his Tajrīd al-iʿtiqād on theology, the Zīj-i Īlkhānī on astronomy, the Ḥall mushkilāt al-Ishārāt , his influential commentary on Avicenna's (428/1037) Kitāb al-ishārāt wal-tanbīhāt on philosophy and logic, and his Akhlāq-i Nāṣirī on ethics. Ṭūsī spent at least half of his academic and political life among the Nizārī branch of the Ismailis, first in Quhistan in eastern Iran, and then in Alamut in the north and other Ismaili strongholds. The Persian work published here originated as a lecture series on Nizārī Ismaili doctrine, given by Ṭūsī in Alamut. The edition is a much improved version of the one by Ivanov, based on better manuscripts, unavailable to him.

Second oldest are two commentaries by Abu ʼl-Makārim Ḥasanī (7th/13th cent.), one of them being his Daqāʾiq al-taʾwīl wa-ḥaqāʾiq al-tanzīl , whose extant part is now published in this volume. The Imāmī scholar Abū Jaʿfar Ṭūsī (d. 459-60/1066-7) was born in Ṭūs in Khurāsān. Having completed his basic education there, he left for Baghdad, which at the time was ruled by the Shīʿī Buwayhid dynasty. In Baghdad he attended the classes of various prominent scholars, notably the leading Imāmī rationalist of his time, al-Shaykh al-Mufīd (d. 413/1022) and his successor al-Sharīf al-Murtaḍā (d. 436/1044). After the death of al-Murtaḍā, Ṭūsī, who had already made a name for himself as a thinker and a writer, became the undisputed leader of the Imāmī community. About ten years later Baghdad was invaded by the Saljuqs and Ṭūsī's house and libraries were laid to waste. Tūsī fled to Najaf where he remained until his death. Al-Muqaddima fi ʼl-kalām on concepts in theology figures among Ṭūsī's most important works. The commentary by Najīb al-Dīn al-Ḥusaynī (d. 582/1186) printed in facsimile here are lecture notes, made by one of his students.
