Until recently the Philippines were hardly known in the Netherlands. In academic circles the focus was on Indonesia, and publications on the Philippine part of the Malay archipelago tended to be inspired by matters of economy and state in the former Netherlands East Indies. The 1970s and 1980s showed a substantial broadening of scope and increase in research as well as popular interest in the Philippines, as is evidenced by the large majority of the 349 titles mentioned and annotated in this publication. Many early publications contain interesting information and views as well, however. Pre-war authors who are mainly known for their work on Indonesia, such as Valentijn, Van Hoëvell, Kern, Abendanon, E.F.E. Douwes Dekker, Van Vollenhoven, Van Mook, and Holleman, at one or more stages of their careers also devoted attention to the Philippines. The primary aim of this bibliography is to offer the international and Filipino scholarly public access to articles and books written by Dutch authors on the history, sociology, anthropology and to a lesser extent the geography, languages, economy, and culture of the Philippines. About two hundred of them appeared in the Dutch language. The bibliography proper is preceded by an introduction on the history of relation between the Philippines and the Netherlands and the Netherlands Indies and on shifts in the subjects of Dutch scholarly research as well as popular interest. Access to the titles is facilitated by a geographical and a subject index.

In deze geannoteerde bibliografie van jeugdboeken, waarin Nederlands-Indië en Indonesië een rol spelen, worden 1244 titels gerangschikt. Deze oorspronkelijk Nederlandstalige titels verschenen tussen 1825 en 1991. Van elke titel is een volledige bibliografische beschrijving op genomen, aangevuld met gegevens over eventuele herdrukken en vindplaatsen. Van elke uitgave wordt tevens een samenvatting gegeven, waarin ook informatie is opgenomen over plaats, streek of land waar het verhaal is gestitueerd en onder welke bevolkingsgroep (Indonesisch, Indo-Europees, Nederlands) en sociale klasse het zich afspeelt. Registers op auteurs, illustratoren, uitgevers, titels en onderwerpen ontsluiten de bibliografie en de annotaties. Een inleiding verantwoordt de werkwijze en signaleert een aantal grote lijnen in de Indische jeugdliteratuur. Deze unieke bibliografie is het resultaat van vele jaren speur-en verzamelwerk van Dorotheé Buur (1938) die als documentaliste/archiviste is verbonden aan de afdeling Documentatie Geschiedenis Indonesië van het KITLV. Haar bibliografie maakt een onbekend en onderschat genre lectuur en literatuur toegankelijk, waarin geschiedenis en actualiteit, alsook opvattingen, mentaliteit en vooroordeel alle hun weerslag vinden. Deze bibliografie is in zijn indrukwekkende omvang en diepgang een onontbeerlijk hulpmiddel bij de studie van de Indische jeugdliteratuur met al de daarin vervatte feiten en meningen, voor geïnteresseerden uit historisch, sociologisch en literair oogpunt.

At the height of its power and influence in the seventeenth and eighteenth century the VOC - acronym for the United Netherland East India Company - was the greatest commercial concern in the world. The scope of its activities extended from the Cape of Good Hope to Japan. In 1728, the Ceylonese Chettiyar Nicolaas Ondaatje was sent into exile to the Cape of Good Hope where he died in 1737, only a few months before the end of his term. All these years Nicolaas Ondaatje kept in contact with his family and friends in Ceylon through letters in Tamil, Dutch and Sinhala. His own letters are lost but those he received have been preserved. These letters give an intimate picture of an early eighteenth-century elite Chettiyar community in Ceylon employed by the Dutch East India Company. By contrast, at the Cape Nicolaas Ondaatje found himself in the company of the Free Blacks at the very bottom of the social ladder. Though as a convict he was allowed to move about freely, Ondaatje had to provide his own source of income, making a modest living, first as a doctor and trader and later as a home teacher. In the letters, which are kept in the archive in Cape Town, we have chanced upon a classic case of subaltern history. Here we have a protagonist who has been denied a voice by the quirk of the availability of historical documents, but whose situation comes through in the concern his family and friends show for him in exile thousands of miles away, over nine long years. The letters give an excellent picture of the loyalty of the Chettiyars to one of their own, of their unfailing Christian faith, and of their meticulous account keeping. That we will never know what Nicolaas Ondaatje did to deserve his long exile or how he died shortly before his term ended makes his life history all the more poignant.

This study analyses the dynamics between the non-Muslim merchant elites of Ankara and Izmir (mostly Greeks and Armenians) and their European competitors in the eighteenth century. In particular, it investigates two major developments: the Dutch attempts to penetrate the mohair trade in Ankara and the local resistance they faced, and the Ottoman non-Muslim merchant's infiltration of the Dutch Levant trade and the Dutch reaction to this form of Ottoman 'expansion'.
