Re-imagining Abraham : a re-assessment of the influence of Deuteronomism in Genesis /
:
In Re-Imagining Abraham: A Re-Assessment of the Influence of Deuteronomism in Genesis Megan Warner revisits the tradition that Genesis was edited by editors sympathetic to the theology of the Deuteronomist. On the basis of close, contextual readings of the four passages most commonly attributed to (semi-)Deuteronomistic hands, Warner argues that editorial use of Deuteronomistic language and themes points not to a sympathy with Deuteronomistic theology but rather to a sustained project to review and even subvert that theology. Warner's 're-imagining' of Abraham demonstrates how Israel's forebear was 're-imagined' in the post-exilic context for the purpose of offering the returning exiles a way forward at a time when all the old certainties, and even continued relationship with Yahweh, seemed lost.

Re-visioning the Mission of Health : A Global Invitation to Heal and Thrive in Crisis /
:
This volume is a global, multidisciplinary exploration of the church's mission of creating healthy individuals, families, communities and societies. Following the healing ministry of Jesus, Christians have assumed the availability of divine healing and spiritual well-being, internally and interpersonally. Contributors analyze diverse ministries of health and healing, from around the world and throughout the ages, through historical, theological, and practical lenses. These include desert monasteries; medieval hospices, and shrines; modern "medical missions"; "Christian health services"; contemporary psychological therapies; and Christian healers, who may use traditional medicines and reject biomedical intervention. This research shows how healing is integral to Christian faith and mission.

Re-Evaluating the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea /
:
Using the framework provided by the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, a major maritime testimony dating from AD 40-70, this volume brings together philologists, historians and archaeologists to look closely at the interactions between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean world. Centered on the antiquity but with a long-term approach and designed as a contribution to the French commentary on the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, this collection of papers relies on recent advances made in the field of ancient geography and text editing. It also takes advantage of ongoing fieldwork, both in terms of the archaeology of the establishments themselves, as well as the history of the techniques employed. They reveal the dynamics of commercial, religious and military networks, while granting full importance to the sui generis nature of the text: a continuum in the tradition handed down to us by classical antiquity and a major source on the relations between the Mediterranean and South-East Asia. Over half of the essays in the volume have been translated from French for the first time. The contributors include: Didier Marcotte, Pascal Arnaud, Johan Desanges, Bram Fauconnier & Patrice Pomey, Steven E. Sidebotham, Iwona Zych, Veronica Bucciantini & Michael D. Bukharin, Jeremie Schiettecatte, Axelle Rougeulle, Jean-François Salles, Federico de Romanis, Claude Allibert, Eric Vallet.

Playing On: Re-staging the Passion after the Death of God /
:
In what is often considered 'a society "after God"', millions of Dutch participate annually in a public multi-media performance of Christ's Passion. What to make of this paradox? In Playing On: Re-staging the Passion after the Death of God , Mirella Klomp offers a theological analysis of this performance and those involved in it. Working in an interdisciplinary fashion and utilizing creative interludes, she demonstrates how precisely this production of Jesus' last hours carves out a new and unexpected space for God in a (post-)secular culture. Klomp argues compellingly that understanding God's presence in the Western world requires looking beyond the church and at the public domain; that is the future of practical theology. She lays out this agenda for practical theology by showing how the Dutch playfully rediscover Christian tradition, and - perhaps - even God.

The Literature of the Sages : A Re-Visioning /
:
This volume presents the major works of classical rabbinic Judaism as inter-related aggregates analyzed through three central themes. Part 1, "Intertextuality," investigates the multi-directional relationships among and between rabbinic texts and nonrabbinic Jewish sources. Part 2, "East and West" explores the impact on rabbinic texts of the cultures of the Hellenistic, Roman, and Christian West and the Sasanian East. Part 3, "Halakha and Aggada," interrogates the relationship of law and narrative in rabbinic sources. This bold volume uncovers alliances and ruptures -- textual, cultural, and generic -- obscured by document-based approaches to rabbinic literature.
:
This volume abandons the document-based approach of standard introductions and investigates aggregates of classical rabbinic texts through three broad perspectives - intertextuality, east and west, halakhah and aggadah - generating fresh insights that will reset the scholarly agenda. :

Breeding crops with resistance to diseases and pests /
:
Breeding crops with resistance to diseases and pests' is the most up-to-date textbook on this topic targeted towards students in Plant Sciences. This book describes the most basic elements in plant pathogen interactions and defence strategies in plants. The scientific background is explained as far as it is relevant for breeders to make sensible choices in designing and running their breeding work. A major part of the book presents the options plant breeders have to consider such as what strategy to follow, what aspects to evaluate or measure, and whether it is best to apply mixtures of pathotypes or to test pathotypes one by one. Professionals, notably in the field of Plant Breeding, may also use it as a manual for disease resistance breeding. The book should be of interest to anyone interested in plant defence strategies and the enhancement of resistance in modern cultivars. In order to enliven and illustrate the text, background reading, interesting examples and exceptions, concrete cases of application and further reading are given. Supplementary reading is readily distinguished from the main text by a different typography, so it is clear what material is most relevant and what is meant as examples supporting the main story lines. Most sections are followed by exercises so that students can test whether they understood the material that was presented.

Anarchetypes : A Re-evaluation of Marginal Literary Forms and Genres /
:
Why have literary works and corpuses - such as ancient Greek-Roman novels, Renaissance chivalric literature, early modern extraordinary voyages, classical French and English romances, or modern fantasy - been rejected from the canon of high literature? This volume aims at introducing the concept of anarchetype, in contrast to the concept of archetype, in order to define the "flawed design" of texts which, contrary to the Aristotelian tradition, have no closed structure or global organic meaning. This new-formalist approach will allow the re-evaluation of literary narrative and genres which have been judged by rhetors and theorists as marginal leftovers and failures devoid of aesthetic value. Contributors are: Maria Barbu, Carmen Borbély, Corin Braga, Ruxandra Cesereanu, Marius Conkan, Laura T. Ilea, Călina Părău, Radu Toderici, and Alex Văsieș.

Clinical trials and the African person : a quest to re-conceptualize responsibility /
:
Clinical Trials and the African Person aims to position the African notion of the self/person within the clinical trials context. As opposed to autonomy-based principlism, this other-regarding/communalist perspective is the preferred alternative model. This tactic draws further attention to the inadequacy of the principlist approach particularly in multicultural settings. It also engenders a rethink, stimulates interest, and re-assesses the failed assumptions of universal ethical principles. As a novel attempt that runs against much of the prevailing (Euro-American) intellectual mood, this approach strives to introduce the African viewpoint by making explicit the import of the self in a re-contextualized arena, meaning within the community and a given milieu. Thus, research ethics must go beyond autonomy-based considerations for the individual, to rightly embed him/her within his/her community and the environment.

Saved from Desert Sands : Re-discovering Objects on the Silk Roads /
:
Saved by Desert Sands , edited by Kelsey Granger and Imre Galambos, unites historians, codicologists, art historians, archaeologists, and curators in the study of material culture on the Silk Roads. The re-discovery of forgotten manuscript archives and sand-buried cities in the twentieth century has brought to light thousands of manuscripts and artefacts. To date, textual content has largely been prioritised over physical objects and their materiality, but the material aspects of these objects are just as important. Focusing primarily on the material and non-textual, this volume presents studies on silver dishes, sealing systems, manuscripts, Buddhist paintings, and ceramics, all of which demonstrate the centrality of material culture in the study of the Silk Roads.

War Traditions from the Qumran Caves : Re-Thinking Textual Stability and Fluidity in the War Text manuscripts /
:
In this volume, Hanna Vanonen offers a fresh view to the Milhamah and Sefer ha-Milhamah manuscripts by producing a thorough close-reading analysis of them, paying attention not only to their contents but also to manuscripts as material artifacts. Vanonen demonstrates that studying the stability and instability of the War traditions does more justice to the complex material than a traditional chronological literary-critical model. In addition, Vanonen argues that at least liturgical use and study purposes may have created needs for producing different manuscripts that were simultaneously important.

Everyday life and the sacred : re/configuring gender studies in religion /
:
An interdisciplinary gender-sensitive approach toward perspectives on the everyday and the sacred are the hallmark of this volume. Looking beyond the dualistic status-quo, the authors probe the categories, textures, powers, and practices that define how we experience, embody, and understand religion and the sacred, their interconnection, but also disassociation with the secular. Contributions by an international group of feminist theologians and religious studies scholars aim to re-configure the study of both religion and gender: Angela Berlis, Anne-Marie Korte, Kune Biezeveld †, Helga Kuhlmann, Maaike de Haardt, Akke van der Kooi, Dorothea Erbele-Küster, Willien van Wieringen, Magda Misset-van de Weg, Gé Speelman, Mathilde van Dijk, Jacqueline Borsje, Hedwig Meyer-Wilmes, Goedroen Juchtmans, Alma Lanser and Riet Bons-Storm.

From Josephus to Yosippon and Beyond : Text - Re-interpretations - Afterlives /
:
Two millennia ago, the Jewish priest-turned-general Flavius Josephus, captured by the emperor Vespasian in the middle of the Roman-Jewish War (66-70 CE), spent the last several decades of his life in Rome writing several historiographical works in Greek. Josephus was eagerly read and used by Christian thinkers, but eventually his writings became the basis for the early-10th century Hebrew text called Sefer Yosippon, reintegrating Josephus into the Jewish tradition. This volume marks the first edited collection to be dedicated to the study of Josephus, Yosippon, and their reception histories. Consisting of critical inquiries into one or both of these texts and their afterlives, the essays in this volume pave the way for future research on the Josephan tradition in Greek, Latin, Hebrew, and beyond.

Radical frame semantics and biblical Hebrew : exploring lexical semantics /
:
Since James Barr's work in the 1960s, the challenge for Hebrew scholars has been to continue to apply the insights of linguistic semantics to the study of biblical Hebrew. This book begins by describing a range of approaches to semantic and grammatical analysis, including structural semantics, cognitive linguistics and cognitive metaphors, frame semantics, and William Croft's Radical Construction Grammar. It then seeks to integrate these, formulating a dynamic approach to lexical semantic analysis based on conceptual frames, using corpus annotation. The model is applied to biblical Hebrew in a detailed study of a family of words related to "exploring," "searching," and "seeking." The results demonstrate the value and potential of cognitive, frame-based approaches to biblical Hebrew lexicology.

Method and theory in the study of religion : working papers from Hannover /
:
Since the downfall of the phenomenology of religion as the leading paradigm in the study of religion in the 1960s, theoretical and methodological discussions surrounding the nature and identity of the study of religion as an academic discipline have proliferated. The essays included in this volume approach these debates from a variety of angles. Based on a series of talks held at the University of Hannover over the last few years, the essays are intended to be understood as diagnostic works in progress and thus as working papers, all of which strive to point out important problems and perspectives in the field of theories and methodology and to draw attention to the future of the discipline. Using developments in Hanover as a launch pad, the volume forms the basis for further insights into the direction of the study of religion as a discipline at large.
