Congress volume : Basel, 2001 /

: This volume publishes the papers given by invitation at the 17th Congress of the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament, which was held in Basel from 5-10 August 2001. It presents a state of the art of the current exegesis of the Hebrew Bible, taking into account the latest research in general linguistics and semitic philology, as well as textual criticism (Massora Magna, Septuagint, Qumran manuscripts), ethno-sociology and archaeology. Feminist biblical studies are duly represented as well as the last research on literary criticism on the Pentateuch, especially in its relation to other ancient Near Eastern texts (Neo-assyrian and Aramaic inscriptions). Finally, two contributions throw light on the problem of religious interpretation of the Bible (Resurrection of the Dead and Biblical Theology).

Encounters in quest of Christian womanhood : the Basel Mission in pre- and early colonial Ghana /

: Christianity has come to be a religion embraced especially by women and not least in Africa. This book provides one of the as yet rare case studies for the early stages of this development: how African women on the pre- and early colonial Gold Coast (Ghana) encountered Basel Mission Christianity, 1843-1885. Popular interpretations have tended to describe Christianity as either 'empowering' or 'domesticating' African women. Looking at variegated push-and-pull factors and in its focus on the agency of Ghanaian women this detailed analysis moves beyond. It situates the quest for Christian womanhood as part of trans-national discourses and exchanges, as well as local interactions, and writes a social history that is at once transnational and transcultural.

Handel als Medium von Kulturkontakt : Akten des interdisziplinären altertumswissenschaftlichen Kolloquiums (Basel, 30.-31. Oktober 2009) /

: Trade/exchange and cultural contacts are topics which defy single-disciplinary approaches to antiquity. They were combined for the last of the interdisciplinary colloquia in ancient studies (2009) organised by junior researchers from Basel University to enhance interdisciplinary research between the various subject areas. A key objective of the format was to bring together students, junior and senior researchers from various fields of research and to integrate their discussion into a teaching unit on both undergraduate and graduate level. The aim of the conference was not to study the topic of trade/exchange as a medium of cultural contact comprehensively but rather to highlight its potential for interdisciplinary teaching and research. Three key aspects were addressed: theoretical perspectives, specific case studies discussing material traces of trade/exchange in the context of cultural contacts, and the extent to which the subject had already been part of ancient discourse. The volume includes chapters by Celine Wawruschka on theoretical approaches to exchange in archaeology, Rainer Nutz on trade in Middle Kingdom Egypt, Faried Adrom on Late Minoan Crete and Egypt, Rania Kirreh on the Phoenician trading network as witnessed by ceramic sources, Lucja Zieba on slave trade/human trafficking in the Homeric epics, and Beatrice Wyss on trade between the Mediterranean and India as mirrored in Philon's criticism on luxury. A concluding chapter by Melanie Wasmuth (with students' contributions) synthesizes discussions during the colloquium and follow-up sessions.

Nomina simplicium medicinarum ex synonymariis Medii Aevi collecta = Semantische Untersuchungen zum Fachwortschatz hoch- und spätmittelalter Drogenkunde /

: The lack of a well organised index of synonyms of plant names for the period of the later Middle Ages has increasingly been felt by historians, philologists and sociologists to be one of the big lacunas in their field. In his Boec van medicinen in Dietsche (Brill, 1967) Willem F. Daems presented in a Synonymarium van Middelnederlandse Plantennamen a summary of the plant names which occurred in a single text conceived in c. 1300. He now evaluates, assigns parameters for meaning to and in the majority of cases identifies the pharmaco-botanical material contained in about 100 medieval manuscripts and text editions (German, Dutch and English). The depth and breadth of the author's botanical knowledge is widely recognised and the combination of this with his background in history and philology make this book a long-awaited and indispensable standard reference work in the field.

The western Christian presence in the Russias and Qajar Persia, c.1760-1870 /

: Winner of The 2018 Saidi-Sirjani Book Award In The Western Christian Presence in the Russias and Qājār Persia, c.1760-c.1870 , Thomas O'Flynn vividly paints the life and times of missionary enterprises in early nineteenth-century Russia and Persia at a moment of immense change when Tsarist Russia embarked on an expansionist campaign reaching to the Caucasus. Simultaneously he charts the relationship between the new Persian dynasty of the Qājārs and missionary activity on the part of European and American missionaries. This book reconstructs that world from a predominantly religious perspective. It recounts the sustaining ideals as well as the everyday struggles of the western missionaries, Protestant (Scottish, Basel and American Congregationalist) and Catholic (Jesuit and Vincentian). It looks at the reactions of diverse tribal peoples, the Tatars of the North Caucasus, the Kabardians and Circassians. Persia was the ultimate goal of these missionaries, which they eventually reached in the 1820s. Altogether this study throws light on the troubled course of history in West Asia and provides the background to politico-religious conflicts in Chechnya and Persia that persist to the present day.

Philosophy in the Islamic World : Volume 4/1: 19th-20th Centuries: The Arabic-Speaking Region /

: Philosophy in the Islamic World is a comprehensive and unprecedented four-volume reference work devoted to the history of philosophy in the realms of Islam, from its beginnings in the eighth century AD down to modern times. The focus of this fourth installment of the series, divided into two volumes, is the 19th and 20th centuries and geographically on the Arab countries, the Ottoman-Turkish region, Iran, and Muslim South Asia. During this time philosophy was pursued at Islamic institutions and increasingly in Western-style universities, but philosophy also had an impact beyond academia. In each chapter, an international expert on philosophy in this period explores the teachings of individual philosophers, philosophical movements (philosophy of religion, logical empiricism, deconstructionism, etc.), and schools (for instance the continuation of Mullā Ṣadrā's philosophy of being). Debates over cultural authenticity, political rule, gender, and other major issues are also presented. This is the English version of the relevant volume of the Ueberweg, the most authoritative German reference work on the history of philosophy, which updates the German version ( Philosophie in der Islamischen Welt Band 4/1: 19. und 20. Jahrhundert. Arabischer Sprachraum , Basel: Schwabe, 2021) by providing references to the latest scholarly literature. The Correspondence of Zwingli and Oecolampadius : Translated and introduced by Nigel Harris and Sharon van Dijk /

: The 183 letters which Huldrych Zwingli and Johannes Oecolampadius exchanged between 1522 and 1531 are a major resource for students of the Swiss Reformation. They have, however, been largely neglected because they have hitherto been available only in the original Latin. This volume translates them all into modern English, along with explanatory notes and a substantial introduction. The book as a whole proposes and initiates a significant re-assessment of several aspects of early Reformation history, such as the extent of Oecolampadius's contribution, the precise nature of his relationship with Zwingli, and the strong connections that existed between the reformers of Zürich, Basel and Strasbourg.

Rachels Klage im antiken Judentum und frühen Christentum : eine auslegungsgeschichtliche Studie /

: Study of the exegesis of the Old Testament tradition on the matriarch Rachel. The centre of the study is Rachel's complaint in Jeremiah 31.15-17. After an analysis of the Old Testament texts, the reception of these traditions in ancient translations in the Pseudepigrapha, in Philo of Alexandria, in Flavius Josephus as well as in the New Testament is investigated. The main part of the study is represented by source material in the Rabbinic literature. The study is concluded by an overview of the interpretation of the Rachel figure in patristic literature. The sources containing the Rachel traditions are, in part, hard to access. The source material on Rachel is presented and analyzed, in order to make the plethora of interpretations accessible to a wider audience, especially the Rabbinic interpretations.
