Quantification : transcending beyond Frege's boundaries : a case study in transcendental-metaphysical logic /

In his attempt to give an answer to the question of what constitutes real knowledge, Kant steers a middle course between empiricism and rationalism. True knowledge refers to a given empirical reality, but true knowledge has to be understood as necessary as well, and so consequently, must be a priori. Both demands can only be reconciled if synthetic a priori judgments are possible. To ground this possibility, Kant develops his transcendental logic. In Frege's program of providing a logicistic basis for true knowledge the same problem is at issue: his logicist solution places the quantifier into the position of the basic element connected to the truth of a proposition. As the basic element of a theory of logic, it refers at the same time to something in reality. Mołczanow argues that Frege's program fails because it does not pay sufficient attention to Kant's transcendental logic. Frege interprets synthetic a priori judgments as ultimately analytic, and thus falls back onto a Leibnizian rationalism, thereby ignoring Kant's middle course. Under the title of the transcendental analytic of quantification Mołczanow discusses Frege's concept of quantification. For Frege, the proper analysis of number words and the categories of quantity raises problems which can only be solved, according to Mołczanow, with the help of Kant's transcendental logic. Mołczanow's book thus deserves its places in the series Critical Studies in German Idealism because it provides a further elaboration of Kant's transcendental logic by bringing it into conversation with contemporary logic. The result is a new conception of the nature of quantification which speaks to our time.

This work - the first full-length account of its theme in English - identifies Kant's doctrine of inner sense as a central, and problematic, element within the 'architectonic of pure reason' of the first Critique. Its exegesis exposes two, variant construals of the character and capacities of inner sense: the first, 'positive' construal functions in Kant's account of the nature of knowledge in the Transcendental Analytic, while the second, 'negative' construal functions in Kant's account of the limits of knowledge in the Transcendental Dialectic. Green shows how this variance underlies, and destabilizes, the basic intention of Kant's theoretical philosophy, to give an account of both the nature, and the limits, of cognition. The work complements detailed analysis with an exhaustive review of English, French, and German scholarship on the doctrine. An Appendix on Kant's recently discovered 'Vom inneren Sinne' fragment evinces Kant's continued concern with this doctrine, and a Conclusion intimates the importance of Fichte's and Schelling's identification of the 'aporia of inner sense' to the subsequent development of transcendental idealism.

Birth Houses (Mammisis) are important components of late Egyptian temple complexes but have not been investigated in detail since the fundamental study of François Daumas published in 1958. In the meantime, new archaeological findings as well as re-evaluations of theology and piety in Greco-Roman Egypt have considerably expanded our traditional understanding of these extraordinary buildings. Therefore, reassessment of phenomena and expanded research approaches need to be undertaken.This book presents the printed versions of the lectures given by international Egyptologists at the IFAO in Cairo on March 27-28, 2019, as part of the 1st Colloquium on "Mammisis of Egypt". In the publication, criteria and reconsiderations are put up for discussion that can be decisive for the identification and definition of Mammisis. The spectrum of topics ranges from theological basics (including the significant birth cycle) and typical features, through historical development and cultic events, to the architecture of these temple buildings. Special motifs, theoretical and iconographic concepts and finally the persistence of certain rites in modern Egypt are also covered. One chapter introduces current scientific projects and their methods that are dedicated to selected mammisis or chapels (Coptos, Deir el-Medina, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Philae, Bahariya, Kellis, Jebel Barkal).Numerous illustrations complement the contributions. Depuis lors, des découvertes archéologiques et de nouvelles approches de la théologie et de la piété de l'Égypte gréco-romaine ont considérablement amélioré notre compréhension de ces bâtiments exceptionnels. Il est donc nécessaire de faire le point sur le sujet en élargissant les techniques d'approche.Ce livre rassemble les textes des communications présentées par des spécialistes internationaux dans le cadre du 1er colloque sur les mammisis d'Égypte, qui s'est tenu à l'Ifao les 27 et 28 mars 2019.
