Rabbinic body language : non-verbal communication in Palestinian rabbinic literature of late antiquity /

This study constitutes the first comprehensive examination of rabbinic body language represented in Palestinian rabbinic sources of late antiquity. Catherine Hezser examines rabbis' appearance and demeanor, spatial movement, gestures, and facial expressions on the basis of literary and social-anthropological methods and theories. She discusses the various forms of rabbis' non-verbal communication in the context of Graeco-Roman and ancient Christian literary sources and in connection with the material culture of Roman and early Byzantine Palestine. Catherine Hezser convincingly shows that in rabbinic literature body language serves as an important means of rabbis' self-fashioning. Rabbinic texts create the image of a particularly Jewish type of intellectual who functioned and competed for adherents within the highly visual and body-conscious environment of late antiquity.

Creation language in Romans 8 : a study in Monosemy /

Modern scholarship tends to understand Paul's use of creation language (κτίσις) in Rom 8.18-23 as part of a commentary on the state of sub-human creation. This misguided position warrants an inquiry into the state of lexical study in New Testament scholarship. As a result, Fewster articulates a theory of lexical monosemy, cast in the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The model is applied to Paul's use of κτίσις through a robust corpus analysis and investigation into the word's role within the paragraph. κτίσις contributes to the cohesive structure of Rom 8.18-23 and-contra the majority of interpreters-functions as a metaphor for the human body.

Arjunawijaya : A kakawin of Mpu Tantular /

The present translation of the kakawin Arjunawijaya appeared earlier as the author's Pd.D. thesis for the Australian National University in 1971. The poem under study only became better known to Western scholars in 1849, when R. Friederich described it. Although many scholars in the field have been familiar with the poem ever since, no separate study has been devoted to it. It is now published together with the translation and its explanatory notes. The punctuation marks which the author introduces in the body of the text are admittedly still tentative and experimental in nature. In the introduction to the text, the author discusses its dating and origins; and includes a comparison with the Old Javanese Uttar*a*kanda poem. Separate chapters are devoted to a description of contemporary life and ideas as reflected in this poem. According to the author, Tantular's poem is partly a reflection of the real world in which he lived, and is not to be seen merely as a tale, as Pigeaud has suggested in his Java in the 14th Century: a study in Cultural History (The Hague, 1960-1963).

Although this fact was acknowledged by previous generations of scholars, it was during the twentieth century that the study of ancient letter-writing practices came to the fore and began to be applied to the study of the letters of the New Testament. Attempts to understand kalāla began with acknowledging its unintelligibility but ultimately brought into existence a capacious body of interpretative ḥadīth , associated with early Islamic authorities. The analysis of these traditions affords insights into the changing conception of scripture during the first two Islamic centuries, the early history of Islamic exegesis and jurisprudence, and varying scholarly attitudes towards constituent sources of Islamic law. The book highlights the importance of coherent methodology of dating and reconstructing Muslim traditions according to their lines of transmission ( isnāds ) and their narrative content ( matns ).

Direct speech appears on nearly every page of the Hebrew Bible, and the large number of publications on direct discourse in the Bible highlights the importance of the subject for biblical studies. However, thus far only isolated aspects of the various problems that direct discourse presents have received attention. Studies of individual verbs introducing direct discourse, such as \'answer\', \'speak\', \'say\', and others are necessarily atomistic, even though appropriate in their own right. Other markers of direct discourse, such as \'Thus said Yahweh\', or \'oracle of Yahweh\', tend to be treated as theological constructs isolated from the larger issues of direct discourse marking in general. Speaking of Speaking aims to enrich the reading of the biblical text by offering a coordinated analysis of all such markers, not only in order to consolidate a considerable body of work that is often overlooked by scholars, but also to move further toward a synthesis that can permit informed generalizations not possible at the present time. There is an overwhelming wealth of material on nudity and nakedness which has come down to us from Ancient Egypt. As a socio-cultural construct found in images and texts, the naked/nude body can be associated with negative, positive, and neutral connotations. Ancient Egyptian image-text-compositions can be used to study what was perceived as "naked" or "nude" and how the body was emically evaluated in certain situational contexts. Of special interest are also the epistemes surrounding the naked/nude body and how it was perceived and interpreted by researchers, whose conceptualizations of corporealities are sometimes biased. This monograph offers a comprehensive analysis of the representations and meanings of the naked/nude body in Pharaonic Egypt between the 5th and 30th Dynasties (c. 2300-350 BC). The focus is on a lexicological and lexicographical analysis of the conceptual field [nudity/nakedness]: Seven lexemes are analyzed in detail in order to grasp the semantic nuances and situational use of terms in the context of Ancient Egyptian texts. Taking into account a broad spectrum of text types, a solid foundation is laid for comparing statements about the naked/nude body found in texts with visual culture consisting of two- and three-dimensional pictorial representations. Alongside insights into the Ancient Egyptian lexicon, this study contributes to the cultural and social anthropology of Ancient Egypt, showing how nakedness/nudity was contextually and discursively constructed. The result is a nuanced view of nakedness/nudity as a culturally shaped concept, providing fresh insights into clothing and gender roles in Ancient Egypt.
