International influences and Baptist mission in West Cameroon : German-American missionary endeavor under international mandate and British colonialism /

This study presents a history, based on original archival and primary source material, of the Baptist mission educational situation of Cameroon province from 1922 to 1945. The provisions of the League of Nations' mandate, under which Great Britain administered the province in this period, included 'complete freedom of conscience and the free exercise of all forms of worship', yet from the beginning of the Mandate clear tensions existed. The missions desired education to serve evangelical purposes, while the colonial government strove for a uniform adaptionist program, suited to European perceptions of the abilities, traditions and local conditions of the African peoples. The work relates thus to a number of themes: European colonialism; the Mandate system; international theories of education; a comparison of British, American and German influences; cross-cultural mission work; and the personal contributions of three particular missionaries: Bender, Gebauer and Dunger.

This collection represents the first large scale attempt to discuss the Middle Eastern mandates as a totality. It compares the application and effects of this very specific form of late colonialism from a variety of different disciplinary perspectives, including anthropology, architecture, archival conservation, economics, history, law and sociology. It contains analyses at both micro and macro levels, including specific instances of revolt or collaboration, studies of particular individuals, of professional groups and their contributions to "nation-building," comparisons between the various political and cultural policies of the mandatory powers, and the formation and practice of "le savoir colonial" by contemporary ethnographers, officials, physicians and teachers. Cited by al-Muqaddasi in c.985 and then by al-Idrisi in c.1150, the medieval port of Sharma was discovered in 1996 at the extremity of the Ra's Sharma, 50km east of al-Shihr on the Hadramawt coast of Yemen; it was excavated in 2001-2005. This unique site was actually a transit entrepôt, a cluster of warehouses probably founded by Iranian merchants and entirely devoted to the maritime trade. It knew a rather short period of activity, between around 980 and the second half of the 12th century, which may be acknowledged as the Sharma horizon. Excavations proved that this settlement experienced six occupation phases, which are closely related to the political and economic developments in the region at that time.

English Bazar in Colonial Bengal : An Urban History of Malda (1813-1947) /
:
India has a long history of urbanization from the time of the Indus Valley civilization to the modern age, and it bears specific characteristics relating to their historical circumstances. The urban centre that developed in Malda district of West Bengal during the period specified is categorically different from urbanization in the pre-colonial period. The urbanization at Lakhnauti in Bengal is archaeologically not very notable. The second urbanization that started there in the thirteenth century was the beginning of the process of urbanization in Malda and was identical to the features of any Muslim capital centric urban centre. The first British urban establishment that took place in the district during the pre-colonial phase originated with the establishment of the commercial factory of the East-India Company at English Bazar in 1680. However, a new type of urbanization took place after the formation of the Malda district in 1813. The nucleus of the administrative headquarters was located in the pre-colonial English settlement area popularly known as English Bazar. The gradual expansion of the city necessitated by administration and the need to accommodate the influx of migrants over the years from different areas of Bengal, led the district to assume a definite shape after establishment of the English Bazar Municipality in 1869. This book is an important contribution to the literature on the urbanization of colonial India at the micro level. It discusses conceptual as well as theoretical issues relating to urbanization, urban experiences of pre-colonial and colonial India, and the origin and growth of the English Bazar town.
